Mitchell contributed 20 points in the second half alone, including a layup off a backcourt steal from Strus that pushed the lead to seven with under two minutes left. Strus set a career playoff high with six threes and 20 points.

Back at Rocket Arena for a closeout, the conditions are as good as they get for Cleveland. Mitchell at 32-36 points is the realistic ceiling; he had 39 second-half points in Game 4 and was the offensive catalyst in Game 5's overtime run. 

Mitchell reached 2,000 career postseason points in this series and has been operating at a level that puts him firmly in the All-NBA conversation. A closeout game at home is where those kinds of players deliver their defining performances. 

Harden's 30-point overtime game answered every critic from Games 1 and 2 expect 22-26 points from him with the ball security that has defined his play since Game 3. Strus shooting 6-for-whatever from three at Rocket Arena has been one of the surprises of these playoffs; if he finds that rhythm again, Cleveland is pulling away from the Pistons before the fourth quarter starts.

Game 5 will haunt Cunningham for a while. He finished with 39 points, 9 rebounds, 7 assists, and 2 steals, the best individual performance of this series by either player and still ended up on the losing side. His potential game-tying three at the end of regulation was ruled a two-pointer after review because his foot was on the line. 

Detroit had 11 lead changes and nine ties across 53 minutes of basketball and the Pistons could not convert any of it into a series lead. Jenkins started in place of a player and contributed 19 points. Harris had 13. The supporting cast was present. It was simply not enough. 

On the road in Cleveland for a must-win elimination game, Cunningham has to deliver another 35-plus night and he will. He averaged 36.3 points across Games 5 through 7 against Orlando when the Pistons were facing elimination, and the same competitive instinct that drove that run applies here. 

Detroit has won their last five postseason home games but the road record in this series is 0-3 they need to become a different team at Rocket Arena than they have been across three previous visits. Harris at 20-22 points is the supporting requirement he was reliable in Games 3 and 4 and must be again if Detroit is to keep this alive. 

Ausar Thompson's four steals in Game 5 were the best defensive individual performance of any player in the series; his ability to disrupt Harden's dribble penetration and Mitchell's drive-and-kick lanes could be the tactical key that keeps Cleveland from pulling away in the third quarter the way they have repeatedly done at home.
