After beating the Pelicans in their home opener, Memphis was on cloud nine. However, they were brought down to earth Friday night, as the Miami Heat took care of business, running the Grizzlies out of their own gym with a blistering first half performance. They were blown away, conceding 146 points while managing to put up only 114 of their own on the board. With this loss, Memphis falls to 1-1 for the season.

It was a forgettable night offensively with none of the Grizzlies players touching the 20 point mark. Memphis’ superstar Point Guard, Ja Morant played just 22 minutes being held to a paltry 12 points. Jaren Jackson Jr. was the scoring leader for the Grizz with 19 points on the night.

The Heat were a +28 in the painted area and won the rebounding battle 57-41. They also pickpocketed Memphis 15 times, disrupting their offense time and again. The Grizzlies were unable to close down the passing lanes as well, with Miami going off for 34 assists. Having 20 turnovers did not help their cause either. Overall it was a disappointing performance from the Grizz in front of their home fans, who were hoping for a repeat of Wednesday night.

Indiana Pacers

In what was a repeat matchup of the 2025 NBA championship series, the Indiana Pacers went toe-to-toe with their conquerors from June, losing in double overtime 141-135.  Ben Mathurin put on a show at Gainbridge Fieldhouse with a team high 26 points for the Pacers. 

He received excellent support from Pascal Siakam who finished with 32 points and 15 boards. Obi Toppin came off the bench to add another 20 points. In spite of such balanced scoring, Indiana were unable to come away with a win. The Thunder kept their nerve in the dying moments of the game, denying the Pacers a victory in their home opener. 

A telling stat was the 14 turnovers Indiana had during the course of the game. The Pacers also gave up 60 rebounds, something that proved to be decisive in such a close encounter. Having said that, Indiana can certainly be proud of how they gave a good account of themselves on opening night, in front of their loyal fans.

Friday’s loss to the Pacers can be taken as an off night for the Grizzlies or a warning as to what happens when energy levels are low while starting a game. This performance from Memphis leans more towards the latter as they were sluggish in the early moments, allowing Miami to take control. 

Tuomas Iisalo understands that he cannot afford another start like the one the Grizz had in their previous outing, especially in front of the home faithful. Overhauling is required on both ends of the floor, if Memphis wants to get back to winning ways.

Indiana, seeking its first win of the season, needs to focus on taking care of the basketball better. Rebounding is another area of concern for Rick Carlisle. Without securing the ball, a team cannot run its offense and no one knows this better than the former Celtic. The Pacers will also have the added pressure of facing a noisy crowd at FedEx Forum come Saturday night.
