Teams Preview

Atlanta Hawks

In Game 2 McCollum scored 32 points on 12-for-22 shooting and led a late surge that erased a 12-point fourth-quarter deficit, capping it with six points in the final two minutes to give Atlanta a 107-106 win.

Jonathan Kuminga added 19 off the bench, while Johnson scored 17 and Okongwu put up 15. Down to their final possession multiple times, they refused to fold. That is a different kind of win than Game 1 going smoothly would have been a comeback on the road tells you something about the team's belief.

Now they come home for the first time. State Farm Arena has not hosted a playoff game since 2023 and the crowd will be electric. McCollum is in form in two straight games of 26 and 32 points. He can push into that same 28-32 range in Game 3 with the home crowd behind him.

Johnson needs a signature night where he has triple-double potential every game, and against a tired Knicks team that just blew a lead on national TV, his combinations at the nail could be devastating. Expect Johnson in the 24-28 point range. Daniels and Alexander-Walker keeping the Knicks' guards uncomfortable on defense will matter just as much as the scoring.

The Hawks on average score 118.5 points per game, they score 47.4% from the field and are ranked 13th in the league, and 37.1% from the arc and are ranked 5th in the league. The Hawks grab 43.5 rebounds per game and ranked 18th in season.

New York Knicks

The Knicks had the NBA's best fourth-quarter net rating during the regular season and still managed just 15 points on 5-for-22 shooting in the final frame of Game 2.  That is not just a bad quarter. That is a collapse. Brunson scored 29 and Towns had 18, but the Knicks were up by 12 entering the fourth and watched McCollum and Kuminga dismantle them in the closing minutes.

The late-game offensive struggles were a significant factor, as the team could not generate open looks or convert on crucial possessions. The pressure of the playoffs seemed to weigh heavily on the young squad as they struggled to maintain their composure. This inability to close out games raises serious questions about their readiness for a deep playoff run.

The Knicks need to be better in the clutch but more importantly, they need to handle the road environment that now comes with this series. Atlanta's first home playoff game in nearly three years will be deafening.

Brunson will have to be sharp from the jump expect 28-32 points from him in a building that will do everything to speed the game up. Towns is the key again. He has been inconsistent in the first halves of both games and still finished with 25 and 18.

If he comes out with early aggression in Atlanta, the game changes completely. Hart's rebounding will matter on the road; he had 13 and 15 boards in Games 1 and 2, and that physical presence keeps the Knicks in possessions they would otherwise lose.

The Knicks on average, score 116.5 points per game, they score 47.8% from the field and are ranked 11th in the league, and 37.3% from the arc and are ranked 4th in the league. The Knicks grab 45.6 rebounds per game and ranked 7th in the season.

The series margins are thin, as evidenced by McCollum's missed free throws and Bridges' near-buzzer-beater in Game 2. Game 3 in Atlanta changes the dynamic, boosting the Hawks' pace and transition attack with the home crowd's chaos. The Knicks must clean up their fourth-quarter performance, which cost them Game 2. Atlanta's success hinges on Johnson, whose 22.5 points and 8 assists average were achieved in high-pressure games. A 25-8-8 performance from him makes the Hawks tough to beat at home, where McCollum's presence draws defensive focus.

Atlanta Hawks vs New York Knicks Player Stats

Player Name Points Rebounds Assists Steals/Blocks
CJ McCollum 29 3 3.5 1/1
Jalen Brunson 28.5 3.5 7 0.5/0

The Atlanta Hawks are slightly favoured to win the game 3 because State Farm Arena has been waiting three years for this. The Hawks come in with momentum, McCollum in the best stretch of his season, and Johnson yet to have his signature game.

The Knicks are capable of winning anywhere Brunson and Towns are that good but the road environment, Atlanta's pace, and the confidence from Game 2's comeback all tilt this one toward Atlanta. The Hawks take Game 3 and a 2-1 series lead.
