Teams Preview

Oklahoma City Thunder

The Thunder swept the Suns in four games and are now attempting their third straight first-round sweep to begin an NBA Playoffs run. In Game 4 of that series, SGA finished with 37 points and nine assists while Holmgren added 19 points, eight rebounds, and four blocks.

They went into the second round rested, dominant, and missing their second-best player which is also, coincidentally, where the Lakers are coming from. OKC went 39-10 in the regular season without Williams, the second-best record in the league at that stretch they did not fall apart without him, but they became a different and more predictable team.

In Game 1 against a Lakers team still working its way back to full health, SGA is the story. He averaged 33.8 points per game this regular season and has been the most unstoppable player in the Western Conference all year.

Oklahoma City features multiple scoring options alongside SGA, including Holmgren and Ajay Mitchell, and maintains intensity on both ends through its depth. Holmgren at 18-22 points with his rim protection disrupting every Lakers drive is the formula he fundamentally changes how opponents approach the paint.

Mitchell averaged 13.6 points and 3.6 assists in just his second season and has stepped into the Williams role with genuine competence. The Paycom Center crowd for a second-round home opener will be as loud as it has been since last year's championship run.

The Thunders, on average, score 122.8 points per game, they score 48.7% from the field and are ranked 2nd in the league, and 36.3% from the arc and are ranked 5th in the league. The Thunders grab 44 rebounds per game and ranked 6th in the season.

Los Angeles Lakers

Game 6 against Houston was LeBron James at his most controlled. James led the Lakers with 28 points, 8 assists, and 7 rebounds as Los Angeles used a 27-3 first-half run to blow the game open and roll to a 98-78 win Houston's lowest scoring output of the postseason.

Rui Hachimura added 21 points and Austin Reaves contributed 15 in his second game back from a multi-week oblique absence. The defense held Houston to just 5-of-28 from three. It was a performance that showed exactly what this team looks like when it is locked in, healthy, and executing and those three things were finally true simultaneously.

The challenge now is a different universe from the Rockets. Oklahoma City's defensive pressure and depth were evident throughout the regular season, where the Thunder swept all four meetings against the Lakers, often by wide margins.

Their ability to force turnovers and convert them into fast-break points has been a defining trait. LeBron needs another 28-32 point performance but with far more ball security than the 8-turnover Games 4 and 5 that nearly cost them the Houston series.

Reaves is still regaining form after more than three weeks out the oblique takes time to trust fully, but even a 70% Reaves gives the Lakers a second creation option that changes OKC's defensive coverage.

Smart's physical defense against SGA is the most important individual matchup of the game and could push the Thunder's best player into uncomfortable pull-up territory if executed properly. Hachimura's 21-point Game 6 showing was not a one-off; he has been active and decisive all series.

The Lakers on average score 101.2 points per game they score 47.4% from the field and are ranked 4th in the league, and 38.6% from the arc and are ranked 2nd in the league. The Lakers grab 41.5 rebounds per game and Ranked 9th in season.

The Thunder swept the Lakers in the regular season by a 29.3-point average, which usually predicts a short series. However, playoff LeBron James elevates his game beyond regular-season data. Both teams face injury concerns with their second-most important players (Doncic and Williams), but OKC's depth without Williams is superior to the Lakers' without Doncic.

The Thunder's focus, as Daigneault confirmed, is on SGA and their defensive system, which held Phoenix to 84 points in Game 1 and poses the main threat to a Lakers offense heavily reliant on LeBron.

Head-to-Head Record (Last 5 Matches):

Oklahoma City had a 4–0 edge in the last four meetings this season. The Thunder averaged 131 points per game while conceding just 91.5, and the Lakers averaged 91.5 points while giving up 131 to OKC. The average total points per game sits at approximately 222.

Oklahoma City Thunder vs Los Angeles Lakers Player Stats

Player Name Points Rebounds Assists Steals/Blocks
Shai Gilgeous-Alexander 33.8 3.8 8 0.5/0.8
LeBron James 20.9 6.1 7.2 1.2/0.6

Oklahoma City at home, fully rested, with SGA in the form of his career and a defensive infrastructure that held the highest-scoring team in the West to 84 points in the opening round that is a brutal first-round matchup for any team, let alone one without its best player.

LeBron will compete and give this everything he has. Reaves will be better than his Game 6 showed. But the Thunder's pace, their pressure defense, and SGA attacking mismatches from the opening possession will be too much on their home floor. OKC wins a physical Game 1 and sets the tone for the series.
