Teams Preview

Oklahoma City Thunder

In Game 1 Shai Gilgeous Alexander scored 25 points, going 15-of-17 from the line despite making just 5 of 18 from the field, and sat out the fourth quarter entirely. Jalen Williams scored 22 and Chet Holmgren added 16. That is what defending champions look like winning by 35 on an off-shooting night for their best player.

The offense was not even close to its peak. The supporting cast stepped up admirably, showing the depth of the roster. Defensively, the team was suffocating, forcing turnovers and dictating the pace. This dominant performance sends a clear message about their title aspirations, even with their star player coasting.

In Game 2, SGA will be more aggressive from the field and less reliant on the free throw line. He averaged 32.7 points per game during last year's title run and this was a gentle warm-up. Expect him in the 28-34 range with better efficiency. Williams looked in rhythm at 22 points and the bench outscored Phoenix's bench 40-24 in Game 1 that gap should remain. The Thunder's defense will continue to make life miserable for the Suns' ball-handlers, and Cason Wallace, Alex Caruso, and Ajay Mitchell gave Phoenix fits on the perimeter. OKC does not need to be perfect to win this one.

The Thunder on average score 119 points per game they score 48.4% from the field and are ranked 5th in the league, and 36.5% from the arc and are ranked 9th in the league. The Thunder grab 44.1 rebounds per game and Ranked 12th in season.

Phoenix Suns

In Game 1 the Suns are coming off defeat where Devin Booker led Phoenix with 23 points on 8-of-17 shooting. Dillon Brooks had 18, and Jalen Green added 17. Brooks and Green combined to go 12-of-38 from the field 32%.

That is the whole problem. When your second and third options combine for 30 field goal attempts and make fewer than a third of them, no lead is ever safe let alone one you never had. Booker needs more consistent support from his teammates.

A combined 32% shooting from Brooks and Green is simply unsustainable for a team with playoff aspirations. The Suns must find a way to get other players involved efficiently or they will continue to struggle against strong opposition.

Booker is good enough to keep the Suns competitive in Game 2 if the supporting cast tightens up. He will push for 28-32 points, and he was one of the few Suns who looked comfortable attacking the rim at times.

For Phoenix to have any chance of stealing one at Paycom, Green needs to find his shooting rhythm and cut his turnovers, and Brooks needs to stop taking contested mid-range pull-ups on a 3-point-heavy OKC defense that knows exactly how to bait him into those looks. They gave up 17 turnovers in Game 1. Getting that down to 10 or fewer would be a significant step.

The Suns, on average, score 112.6 points per game, they score 45.5% from the field and are ranked 28th in the league, and 36.1% from the arc and are ranked 12th in the league. The Suns grab 43.1 rebounds per game and ranked 20th in the season.

OKC outscored Phoenix 34-2 on points off turnovers in Game 1 and 52-24 in the paint. Those margins do not just happen they reflect a genuine gap in how these teams play, not just bad luck on Phoenix's part. The Suns will be sharper in Game 2. They essentially cannot be worse. But the Thunder at home, with SGA locked in and the bench providing depth the Suns cannot match, is a difficult situation for any team. The real question is whether Kevin Durant's knee keeps him sidelined if he plays limited minutes or is out again, Phoenix's offense runs almost entirely through Booker.

Current Standings:

Head-to-Head Record (Last 5 Matches):

Oklahoma City Thunder vs Phoenix Suns Player Stats

Player Name Points Rebounds Assists Steals/Blocks
Shai Gilgeous-Alexander 25 4 7 0/2
Devin Booker 26.1 3.9 6 0.8/0.3

OKC is a machine in the playoffs and SGA has not yet played a full game. The Thunder should win this comfortably and go up 2-0. Booker will make it feel close for a quarter or two, but Phoenix's turnover problems and shooting inconsistency are structural issues that do not fix themselves overnight.
