Adelaide Strikers Women have had a disappointing season thus far in the Women’s Big Bash League 2020. Last year’s runners-up have already suffered two losses in the ongoing season while earning one victory and are at 6th place in the points table. They will now be taking on Melbourne Stars Women in their next clash on the 3rd of November at the Blacktown International Sportspark, Sydney. Melbourne Stars are at the 3rd position in the points table with one win and two abandoned games. They are looking in good shape and would be eager to continue their winning momentum.
This game will be more important to Adelaide Strikers, however, who would be desperate to show that the results so far don’t reflect their quality.
Adelaide Strikers Women will be disappointed with the way their season has progressed so far. After a solid win in their first game against Hobart Hurricanes Women, they have suffered two back-to-back losses. Then their last match was abandoned. This has resulted in them being relegated to the 6th position in the points table which clearly doesn’t reflect the talent that is there in last year’s runners-up.
Adelaide Strikers have a solid batting unit with a robust top-order comprising of Katie Mack, Tahlia McGrath, and Laura Wolvaardt. Wolvaardt was impressive in the first match against Hobart Hurricanes where she scored a fluent 51 and the team would like her to continue that form. A lot, however, will also depend on how Bridget Patterson and Stafanie Taylor perform in the middle-order. Madeline Penna is hitting the ball well and could provide another good finish.
Adelaide’s bowling is good but has been inconsistent. They shot out Hobart Hurricanes for just 84 but gave away 190 runs against Sydney Thunder. Captain Megan Schutt has to lead from the front and ensure that the others like Darcie Brown, Sarah Coyte, and Stafanie Taylor rally around her. In fact, the performance of Coyte and Taylor could be detrimental in this match.

Melbourne Stars Women will be delighted with their showing in WBBL 2020 so far. After ending in the 8th position last year, they find themselves in the 3rd position in the points table this time after one victory and three abandoned games. In their last match, they beat Hobart Hurricanes Women In by 8 wickets after restricting them to just 89-9 in 19 overs.
It seems like the strength of Melbourne Stars this time lies in their bowling. In Katherine Brunt and Natalie Sciver, they have an excellent opening pair that has the ability to keep picking wickets. In the last game, the duo accounted for 6 wickets between them and would be looking to continue that partnership. They also have good options in the form of Holly Ferling, Erin Osborne, and Sophie Day. With so much variety, Melbourne Stars can be more than a handful fr any opposition.
On the batting front, Melbourne Stars impressed the last time with Elyse Villani smashing a wonderful unbeaten 51. The presence of superstar Meg Lanning at the top is a huge difference and her form can be the difference in the team’s fortunes this year. Mignon du Preez and Natalie Sciver are impressive batters for any middle-order and expect these two to fire soon.

The pitch at Blacktown International Sportspark should be a good and even surface. Batters should find the ball coming on to the bat initially and seam bowlers will get some purchase too. It will be interesting to see if spinners can get some grip here.
Thankfully, the weather forecast for Sydney next week has improved. While the weather will be partly cloudy, there are no showers expected and we can look forward to a complete game.
Blacktown International Sportspark has generally not been a high-scoring venue. There have been plenty of low-scoring games here in the past and we can expect another one in this match. With the weather likely to be cloudy, the ball will move around and batters won’t find it easy. The team batting first would be looking to set a target of around 130-140.
The team winning the toss will look to bowl first here. The pitch on this venue is still untested this year and it would be better to chase given the tricky weather so far this season.
Adelaide Strikers Women have maintained a great record in the recent past against Melbourne Stars Women – in the last 5 matches between the two sides, the Strikers have won 4, while losing just one game. Despite losing two back-to-back matches this season, Adelaide Strikers will start as favorites for this clash. Unless they play really poor cricket, they have enough firepower in their ranks to take down Melbourne Stars. In fact, this match might well be the one that gets their campaign back on track.
Expect Adelaide Strikers Women to be the winners of this contest.
