Australia will face Sri Lanka in the first T20I of the five-match series at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG) on Friday.

Before the series started, many would’ve predicted an easy win for the home team but their preparation has been surely affected by the events in the recent past where Justin Langer’s untimely departure from the coaching role turned into a controversy where former players accused the current team members of showing the player power.

Sri Lanka will be entering the contest as an underdog with a squad comprised of a number of youngsters who will be eager to leave their mark.

Therefore, it will be interesting to see how the players from the home team will react in the upcoming 20-over series.

Both teams have faced off 17 times in the history of 20-over format where the Kangaroos won on nine occasions whereas the Islanders have won eight times.

This will be the first time that both teams will play in T20 format at the SCG.

Australia Preview

One thing which surely goes in the favour of the home team is the form against Sri Lanka in T20Is where they’ve won five consecutive matches, that too by a handsome margin.

Cricket Australia (CA) has announced a solid squad for the series but without some notable players who played a key role in the Kangaroos’ maiden ICC T20 World Cup title triumph late last year.

In the batting department, the home team will be heavily relying on the likes of captain Aaron Finch, experienced Steve Smith, middle-order batter Travis Head, explosive Glenn Maxwell, wicketkeeper-batters Mathew Wade, Josh Inglis and all-rounders Moises Henriques, Marcus Stoinis to score the bulk of the runs and put the opposition under pressure.

On the bowling front, the onus will be on the likes of pacers Mitchell Starc, Pat Cummins, Josh Hazlewood along with the spin duo of Adam Zampa and Ashton Agar to dismantle the visitors’ batting unit.

Australia Predicted Playing XI:

Aaron Finch (Captain), Steven Smith, Glenn Maxwell, Marcus Stoinis, Jos Inglis, Daniel Sams, Pat Cummins, Jhye Richardson, Ashton Agar, Kane Richardson, Adam Zampa,

Australia Actual Playing XI:

Aaron Finch, Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc, Steven Smith, Glenn Maxwell, Matthew Wade, Ben McDermott, Marcus Stoinis, Josh Inglis, Adam Zampa, Josh Hazlewood

Sri Lanka Preview

On the bowling front, the onus will be on the likes of pacers Lahiru Kumara, Dushmantha Chameera, Chamika Karunaratne along with the spin trio of Hasaranga, Jeffrey Vandersay and Praveen Jayawickrama to restrict the opposition by claiming timely breakthroughs.

Sri Lanka Predicted Playing XI:

Weather Conditions

The weather forecast for Friday is expected to have thundery showers during the course of the game. With rain playing a huge role in the outcome, the bowlers will find it tough to grip the ball in these conditons.

Venue Details

Sydney Cricket Ground is going to host the the 1st T2OI game of the series between Australia and Sri Lanka

Toss: To Bowl

Both the teams will be keen to win the toss, bowl first and restrict the opposition to less than 170 runs. Average first innings score at Sydney for a T20I game is around 160 runs.

Both teams will be coming in the series hoping to use it as a perfect opportunity to prepare for the upcoming International Cricket Council (ICC) T20 World Cup 2022, which is set to be played in the same conditions in just more than eight months.

On paper at least, there is no comparison between the teams as the home team is far superior compared to the visitors.

Therefore, the prediction is for Australia to secure a win and take a 1-0 lead.
