Netherlands will be happy with their overall effort in the Group A of the Round 1 stage of the T20 World Cup. While their last match against Sri Lanka didn’t end in the way the skipper would have expected while chasing just 163 runs, they’d still back themselves as they face Bangladesh at the Bellerive Oval in Hobart.
The opposition has been in poor form with 4 back to back losses in the NZ tri-series followed by another huge loss in the warm-up game. The Bangladesh coach has been busy dismissing talks of concerns around the team selection.
Soumya Sarkar is back for the T20 World Cup and that should be a huge positive for Bangladesh. While Shakib continues to lead the team, his inconsistency and lack of form could probably make him the weakest link in this side.
The Netherlands bring a top-class bowling attack that has variety and has performed consistently in recent games. They can pose a tough challenge to Bangladesh and unless the key players take responsibility, Bangladesh could be looking at another batting collapse.
The opening combination is a big concern for Bangladesh coming into this T20 World Cup. And they would like to get that right from the very beginning of the tournament.
In the last 19 innings, Bangladesh have opened with 12 different combinations and their opening partnerships have averaged 13.68. This is the lowest among all 16 teams participating in this tournament.
Najmul Hossain Shanto has been a constant in this opening combination of late. Others like Liton Das, Soumya Sarkar, and Mehidy Hasan Miraz have joined him during the recent tri-series in New Zealand.
There was even an instance where Miraz opened alongside Sabbir Rahman in the first game of the tri-series against Pakistan. None of these combinations has worked.
In the middle order, Shakib Al Hasan and Liton Das are the most experienced players Bangladesh can rely on. Afif Hossain and Nurul Hasan would follow them in the lineup. This isn’t the best squad coming from Bangladesh in recent times and they are bound to struggle in the World Cup.
Nasum Ahmed, Taskin Ahmed, and Shoriful Islam will be the key bowlers in the pace department for Bangladesh. Shakib, Soumya, and Mehidy Hasan Miraz will be the top all-rounders to watch out for.

Fred Klaasen, Bas de Leede, and van Meekeren with their bowling effort put the Netherlands in a winning position in their first two games of the World Cup.
In the last match against Sri Lanka that the Netherlands lost, the bowlers were still good, even if not as great as in previous outings. It was the batting failure that finally caught up to them. Chasing a target of 112 runs against UAE, the Dutch lost 7 wickets and won with only a ball to spare.
In the next game, the Netherlands lost 5 wickets chasing 122 against Namibia. And poor strike rates from the top-order batters meant the run chase went right to the last over. Finally, when they were asked to chase 163 against Sri Lanka, it wouldn’t have been so difficult to imagine a loss for the Dutch.
Max ODowd will be the key batter for the Netherlands at the top. Colin Ackerman and Tom Cooper are the ones to watch out for in the middle order. The experienced all-rounder Roelof van der Merwe finds himself much lower down the order.
While the inclusion of 8 all-rounders in the squad allows for great depth in the batting lineup, not all of them are reliable when it comes to batting. Apart from van der Merwe, we reckon Timm van der Gugten is an impact player who can deliver a game-changing performance with the ball.
Max ODowd, Vikramjit Singh, Bas de Leede, Tom Cooper, Colin Ackermann, Scott Edwards (c & wk), Tim Pringle, Roelof van der Merwe, Timm van der Gugten, Fred Klaassen, Paul van Meekeren

There is early movement off the pitch for new-ball bowlers. But as the match progresses, batsmen will find it easier to play their strokes. Showers are expected in Hobart on match day with a high of 13 degrees Celsius.
The average 1st innings score at the Bellerive Oval in Hobart is 169 runs. It is a good venue for batters and bowlers alike. The Dutch bowlers can be expected to make an impact in the early overs and attack Bangladesh’s weakness. Neither of the teams has managed a competitive total in recent games and we reckon a 165-170 total would be good enough for the team batting first.
The toss shouldn’t have a major impact on the game. Though teams batting first in BBL have won 30 of the 52 matches, the recent matches at this venue saw an even competition between teams batting first and second.
Of the 6 matches played at this venue in this tournament so far, teams batting first have won 3. The Netherlands have a solid bowling attack and would back their bowlers to defend a total. The same goes for Bangladesh who’s struggling in the batting department.
The Netherlands have been impressive with the ball and the variety in the bowling attack makes them a force to reckon with. Bangladesh also bring in a good pace attack along with the experience of the skipper as an all-rounder. Neither of these two has a clear advantage over the other. Nevertheless, given some of the batsmen in the Bangladesh setup have more T20 experience, and are just one inspiring game away from finding their form, Bangladesh would start as favourites in our match prediction.
Our prediction is for Bangladesh to win the match
