As the squad for the T20I series between India and South Africa is yet to be announced, all eyes are on the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2025. The tournament will also serve as a crucial platform for batters aiming to impress franchises ahead of the IPL auction at the Etihad Arena in Abu Dhabi. In Group C, Bengal will take on Services at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium, Uppal, Hyderabad, on 4th December from 11 AM onwards. Bengal currently stands second on the table with 12 points, while Services sit at the bottom with just 4 points.
Bengal bounced back strongly to register their third win of the season following a humiliating loss at the hands of Punjab. Bowling first, Bengal conceded a massive 208 runs, with Shahbaz Ahmed being the standout performer, claiming 3 wickets for 36. In the chase, opener Karan Lal delivered a breathtaking knock, smashing 113 off 50 balls, studded with 8 fours and 10 sixes, to guide the team home with five wickets in hand in the 19th over. His opening partner, Abishek Porel, provided solid support with a valuable 41 off 26 balls. The victory gave Bengal a much-needed lift after their heavy 112-run defeat against Punjab.
Services come into this fixture on the back of a defeat against Haryana. Batting first, they posted 157/7, with Nakul Sharma anchoring the innings brilliantly from the lower middle order, scoring 57 runs at a strike rate of 121.28. However, their bowlers were unable to defend the total as Haryana chased it down comfortably, handing Services a 6-wicket loss. Vineet Dhankhar, Vikas Umesh Yadav, and Nitin Tanwar picked up one wicket each, but the attack lacked the penetration needed to apply pressure during the chase.
The two teams last faced each other in the 2021 edition of the tournament. Bowling first, Bengal restricted Services to 90/8, thanks to a disciplined effort from their attack. Pradeep Pramanik was the pick of the bowlers, finishing with 2 wickets. In reply, Bengal made light work of the chase. Sudip Chatterjee smashed a superb 50 off 28 balls, while Abhimanyu Easwaran remained unbeaten on 32, guiding the team to a comfortable 9-wicket victory.
A win in this match will significantly strengthen Bengal’s chances of qualifying for the quarterfinals, keeping them firmly in the race for a knockout spot.

Abishek Porel will open the innings alongside Karan Lal, and the pair will look to build on their impressive 105-run partnership from the previous match. Porel has accumulated 111 runs in 4 games at a strike rate of 168.18, while Karan Lal has been in explosive form, scoring 173 runs in 4 matches at a blistering strike rate of 205.95, including a century. He was also Bengal’s leading run-scorer last season. The duo remains Bengal’s most dangerous opening combination, with Porel gaining added confidence following a strong IPL season for the Delhi Capitals, where he scored 301 runs in 13 games at a strike rate of 150. Skipper Abhimanyu Easwaran will slot in at No. 3 and is currently the team’s leading run-scorer with 185 runs, striking at 150.40.
Yuvraj Keswani will take his place in the middle order alongside Shahbaz Ahmed and Sudip Kumar Gharami. Gharami, who captained Bengal last season, had a modest campaign with the bat, scoring 179 runs in nine matches at a strike rate of 118.54. This season, he has accumulated 53 runs at 126.19 in four outings. Shahbaz Ahmed has contributed 57 runs in four games at a strike rate of 139.02, while also providing valuable breakthroughs with the ball, taking 4 wickets at an economy rate of 8.33. He was Bengal’s biggest positive in the middle order in 2024, producing 237 runs at an outstanding average of 79, coupled with a destructive strike rate of 176.86, which included a memorable century. Keswani, who replaced Shakir Habib Gandhi in the previous match, managed only 10 runs but will be eager to make a stronger impact this time.
Sakshaim Chaudhary, who missed the previous match, is expected to return to the XI. He remains Bengal’s leading wicket-taker this season with 6 wickets in 3 games at an economy of 8.33, and will once again spearhead the bowling attack. He will be supported by the experienced trio of Mohammed Shami, Akash Deep, and Mukesh Kumar. Shami has picked up 5 wickets in 4 games at an economy of 10.45, and his vast experience — 215 wickets from 180 T20 matches — continues to be invaluable. Akash Deep, however, has had a rough season so far, managing just 2 wickets in 2 games while conceding at an economy of 15. Writtick Chatterjee and Sayan Ghosh have been effective in the limited opportunities they’ve had, claiming 3 wickets each in 2 games, adding depth and balance to Bengal’s bowling resources.

Gaurav Kochar will open the innings alongside Nitin Tanwar. Kochar has been Services’ most reliable performer with the bat, scoring 120 runs at a strike rate of 141.17, making him their leading run-getter so far. Nitin Tanwar, on the other hand, has struggled to find rhythm, managing just 14 runs in two games. Skipper Mohit Ahlawat will slot in at No. 3 and brings both form and experience to the middle order. He has scored 89 runs in 4 matches at an impressive strike rate of 164.81 this season. Across his last 10 T20 innings, Ahlawat has amassed 379 runs at a blazing strike rate of 172.27, making him the batter to watch out for in the Services lineup.
Vineet Dhankhar will take his place in the middle order alongside Vikas Hathwala and Nakul Sharma. Dhankhar has been one of the more consistent performers, scoring 89 runs in 4 games at a strike rate of 134.84, while also contributing with the ball by picking up 2 wickets. Vikas Hathwala, however, has been struggling to find form, managing only 24 runs in 3 matches. Nakul Sharma enters this game with confidence after scoring a half-century in the previous outing. He now has 77 runs this season at a strike rate of 118.46, making him an important figure in the Services middle order.
Mohit Jangra will spearhead the Services bowling attack, supported by Mohit Rathee and Pulkit Narang. Rathee and Narang have both picked up 4 wickets each, with Narang standing out as the most economical bowler in the lineup, operating at 6.83 — the lowest among all their bowlers. Jangra has taken 3 wickets, but his economy rate remains on the higher side, sitting above 10, something Services will hope he can improve in this match.

The weather in Hyderabad is expected to be cloudy on match day, with temperatures ranging from 18 to 28 degrees Celsius. Winds will blow from the southeast at 6-10 km/h. It is a balanced pitch. The stadium traditionally offers favourable conditions for batsmen. Its dry surface, combined with relatively short boundaries, makes it easier for batters to clear the ropes, contributing to high-scoring contests. Length balls can travel the distance quickly, putting bowlers under pressure from the start. As the match progresses, spinners do come into play with some turn and assistance on offer, but overall, it remains a venue where stroke-making and aggressive batting thrive.

Bengal’s top order has also been in outstanding form, operating at strike rates well above 150, giving them a significant advantage in both powerplay impact and chasing ability.
We predict that Bengal will win against Services.
