Brisbane Heat beat Adelaide Strikers by 54 runs
A raging Strikers unit is face off a slightly circumspect Brisbane Heat, whose early season brilliance has eluded them somehow, especially with the bat.

Brisbane Heat’s table-topping league stage performance has ensured they get another shot at making it to the final. But, they’ll be a bit concerned about their form going into the challenger.
aving lost a game against the Scorchers (in their final league match) and another against the Sixers (in the qualifier), they’re now up against the Adelaide Strikers who thumped defending champions Perth Scorchers thanks to a dual leg spin attack featuring Lloyd Pope and Cameron Boyce.
Having defeated the Scorchers in their own back yard, the Strikers now have their tail up. Defending a par score on a tricky pitch against the mighty Scorchers at the furnace will give them a great boost of confidence and they’ll be looking to repeat that feat as they get ready to face the Heat at Carrara Oval on Monday.

2 losses in 2 games especially in the business end of the tournament doesn’t bode particularly well for the Heat, who’re already suffering from the exodus of players from the BBL to ILT20 and for national commitments. Although they did well to restrict the Sixers to well under 170, which their in-form bowlers have yet to concede in this season, their batting was out of sorts in their reply.
The loss of big-hitting Kiwi Colin Munro, English keeper Sam Billings, and test pair Usman Khawaja and Marnus Labuschagne has left a big void in their batting unit, and the Heat are still working out a way to fill that hole. The Sixers bowling unit exploited this weakness, but Ben Dwarshuis, in particular, troubled the thin Heat batting order with a testing spell where he picked up wickets for fun. He was on the verge of picking up a hat trick after dismissing Matt Renshaw and Paul Walter in the same over.
The Heat’s bowling unit makes sures their batsmen don’t have to chase down a massive total, but lapses in fielding aren’t helping their cause much. Against the Sixers, the Heat were a bit clumsy on the field, as they dropped a couple of catches. The Heat could have restricted the Sixers to a lower score, but their power surge was costly with Spencer Johnson and Xavier Barlett leaking 38 runs in 2 overs. And it came back to bite them.

Resurgence is the apt word for how the Strikers are currently going at it in the BBL.
From teetering at the bottom half of the table a couple of weeks ago, they have now surged forward in an emphatic fashion to win five matches on the bounce and made it to the challenger. They’re one win away from making it to the grand finale and repeating the heroics of their 2017-18 BBL campaign.
But they have a task on hand-- to deal with the Heat on a difficult batting strip at the Carrara oval. Jake Weatherald showed what he is capable of achieving with another match-defining 50, helping the Strikers post a near-par score after they lost both Matt and D’Arcy Short cheaply. He departed in the 13th over with the score reading 5/91 and James Bazley followed him quickly, but Ben Manenti and Henry Thornton combined to steer the innings to safety, helped by David Payne who scored 14 off 8.
The Strikers’ bowlers stepped up the intensity, knowing they didn’t have a sizeable total to defend. They never let the Scorchers run away with it, and kept piling on the pressure. The Scorchers wilted under pressure, and had no answers to the brilliant bowling by spin twins Lloyd Pope and Cameron Boyce. With a complete team performance like that, the Strikers have made a statement that they’re not too reliant on a single player like Matthew Short or Rashid Khan. And they have it in them to go all the way this season.

Run scoring might be a little difficult on a two-paced wicket where the odd ball holds in the surface. The teams will do well to assess the conditions and play percentage cricket by doing the match-ups well and not losing wickets in clumps searching for some quick runs. Weather forecast looks good for the evening and we should have all the 40 overs in.
With the Gabba getting ready for the second match of the AUS vs WI test series, the Heat will play this challenger at the Carrara oval, where their record just went from bad to worse after the defeat in the hands of the Sixers. They’ve just won 3 out of 8 matches here.
The team batting first has gone on to win the knockouts, so, by that logic, it won’t be surprising if either of these teams elect to bat first should the bat flip go their way. In both the knockout matches, an above par score on the board has been more than enough.
So, the mantra is this: win toss, bat first, get above par, and let the chasing team implode.
Our money is clearly on the Strikers here. 5 wins in 5 matches especially leading in to the business end of the tournament is remarkable, but they’ll be happy they're finally starting to click as a team. Several individuals come to the fore and perform when the team is in a bit of a predicament. The Heat, on the other hand, are not quite sure how to put the depleted batting unit in order after some key players left their stable.
We are backing Adelaide Strikers as the winners of this contest.
