This is match number 20 and we’re heading to the middle of this fifth edition of the Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL). An in-form Adelaide Strikers face a little up and down and inconsistent Brisbane Heat. The Heat started in prime fashion when they thrashed a star-studded Sydney Sixers side. However, Sydney Thunder and Perth Scorchers beat them convincingly as they failed to defend 150 and 146. After a couple of failures, the bowlers came back strongly to restrict Hobart Hurricanes to 123. The margin may look small (with one ball to spare) but the batters largely coasted through. With four points, they are third on the points table.

Meanwhile, the Strikers are sitting nicely at the top of the points table (six points). Their only loss came against the Melbourne Renegades when they couldn’t defend 152. The bowlers came back strongly to defend 113 in a close encounter against Hobart Hurricanes before they thrashed Perth Scorchers in the next game to top the table.

Brisbane Heat Women Preview

While the bowling has done decently collectively, it’s mostly been one-way traffic in the batting department. Beth Mooney has dominated the batting charts for the Brisbane Heat and has scored runs every game. Her lowest in this tournament so far is 35 but the Heat seems to be dependent on her a little too much. The likes of Jess Jonassen and Maddy Green haven’t lived up to expectations. They have scored 66 and 69 runs respectively in the tournament so far.

Moreover, New Zealand’s star all-rounder Amelia Kerr has also been a touch disappointing with both bat and ball. With the ball, Jonassen leads the charts with six wickets while Sammy-Jo Johnson has done well too and has chipped in with five wickets. The other bowlers have been decent and have supported the duo well. Only one bowler has an economy of more than 8 so far in the tournament. It is the batting that has failed and which has cost them a couple of games. The rather inexperienced batting line-up needs to stand up and deliver.

Brisbane Heat Women Predicted Playing XI:

Grace Harris, Beth Mooney (wk), Jess Jonassen, Maddy Green, Laura Harris, Sammy-Jo Johnson, Amelia Kerr, Delissa Kimmince, Kirby Short (c), Mikayla Hinkley, Georgia Prestwidge

Adelaide Strikers Women Preview

While the form of skipper Suzie Bates with the bat might be slightly concerning, the likes of Sophie Devine and Tahlia McGrath have filled in pretty nicely. The duo has got runs consistently in this tournament. It is Devine who has been the enforcer at the top of the order. She has amassed 126 runs and is striking at 144.82 in this WBBL. McGrath has got 102 runs and has a strike-rate of nearly 120. Lauren Winfield has come in as a replacement for Stefani Taylor and has done decently.

Senior bowler Megan Schutt has led the charge with the ball for the Adelaide Strikers. She has picked up five wickets in this tournament and is the joint-leading wicket-taker for the Strikers. Devine has chipped in with the ball beautifully as well. Sarah Coyte has done well too as she’s picked up five wickets as well. Skipper Bates has done decently with the ball.

Weather Conditions

There are showers predicted on the morning of the game. This is a 6:15 PM start and thus, the rain might not affect the game. There are very minimal chances of rain in the evening. We should, as such, get a full game. This is the first game at the Harrup Park in Mackay, Queensland. The pitch should be a decent one to bat on.

Venue Details

The Harrup Park in Mackay, Queensland is an occasional venue for domestic cricket. Not a lot of cricket is played every year at this venue. It hosted a Quadrangular A-team series in 2016. Moreover, only two games will be played at this venue in this fifth edition of the WBBL.

Toss: To Bowl

The team that wins the toss might opt to field first. Both Brisbane Heat and Adelaide Strikers have preferred to bowl first. Interestingly, both the teams’ last wins have come when they have chased down a total. Hence, in good batting conditions, teams will want to chase.

This promises to be a tight game. Both teams seem to be well-balanced but Adelaide Strikers are on a bit of a roll and hence, they will go into this game as slight favorites. However, Brisbane Heat is expected to give them a tough fight.
