Birmingham Phoenix plays its first home game of The Hundred, 2022 and they would look to outclass the defending champions Southern Brave. It hasn’t been an auspicious start for the Phoenix as they lost their opening game of the season against the Trent Rockets. The Southern Brave lived up to their reputation registering a big win against Welsh Fire in their season opener.

Southern Brave displayed excellent form with the ball and the bat in the last game which will add to their confidence. They had defeated the Phoenix in the two games the teams have played in the past. Birmingham Phoenix has better knowledge of the conditions, and we are likely to have a close contest in this game.

Birmingham Phoenix Preview

Moeen Ali’s side has started the tournament with a loss. They went down by 6 wickets in their opening game against Trent Rockets where the side failed to build partnerships. Ali would like his team to strike form in this game. Southern Brave has made an excellent start to the tournament and the Phoenix players shall have to be at their best to win this game.

Miles Hammond did well in the last game, and he will have to provide a quick start to the team with Will Smeed. Ali and Liam Livingstone are key players for the team, and they would have to be at their best in this game. Chris Benjamin, Dan Mousley, and Benny Howell failed toward the end in the last game and the side would have big expectations from them in this game.

Tom Helm was impressive in the last game, and he must get them early wickets as he opens the bowling with Moeen Ali. Graeme van Buuren leaked runs against the Rockets, and he must bowl better lines in the middle overs with Kane Richardson and Imran Tahir. Howell and Livingstone add to their bowling options and the side shall look for a good show here.

Birmingham Phoenix Predicted Playing XI:

Moeen Ali (c), Will Smeed, Miles Hammond, Liam Livingstone, Chris Benjamin (wk), Dan Mousley, Benny Howell, Graeme van Buuren, Tom Helm, Kane Richardson, Imran Tahir

Southern Brave Preview

The defending champions started the campaign in style defeating Welsh Fire by 9 wickets. James Vince would be extremely happy with the performance of his players as they were clinical both with the bat as well as the ball. They have never lost a game against Phoenix in the past and Vince would like to extend that lead here.

James Vince led from the front in the last game, and he will look at a big opening wicket stand with Alex Davies. The side has a formidable middle order with Marcus Stoinis, Tim David, and Ross Whiteley to follow. James Fuller, Chris Jordan, and Craig Overton are clean strikers of the ball, and the side would expect to see fireworks from them towards the end of the innings.

Craig Overton and Michael Hogan made excellent use of the new ball in the last game and a similar show from them would put the side in a commanding position. James Fuller bowled at a great economy rate, and he would look to do the same with Chris Jordan in the middle overs. Stoinis, Jake Lintott, and Rehan Ahmed add good bowling options to this attack.

Southern Brave Predicted Playing XI:

James Vince (c), Alex Davies (wk), Marcus Stoinis, Tim David, Ross Whiteley, James Fuller, Chris Jordan, Craig Overton, Jake Lintott, Rehan Ahmed, Michael Hogan

Weather Conditions

The skies over Birmingham would be clear on August 10 and batting conditions are expected to be excellent. The wicket is flat here and this allows batsmen to play their strokes on this surface. The side batting first in this game would have to target a score of 150 runs to feel safe on this surface.

Venue Details

Edgbaston, Birmingham has a fast wicket where the ball comes into the bat. This along with the fast outfield allows batsmen to score runs quickly. Fast bowlers can generate good bounce and pace from the surface and have done well here. Spinners who flight the ball have got their rewards on this wicket in the past.

Toss: To Bowl

Last year we had seen only one win from a side that had batted first. Big scores have been made at this venue. Setting up a total presents a big challenge for the sides batting first as run chases have been easy. The side that wins the toss shall opt to bowl first in the game.

Birmingham Phoenix would have to get their lines right with the ball as they take on a strong batting line-up. The side comes here with a loss, and they must put that behind their backs. Their bowlers will need to bowl consistent lines in this game for the side to win. The Southern Brave has made the perfect start to the tournament. They have the firepower with the bat, and this would make them favorites to win this contest.
