Central Districts begin their title defense at Nelson taking on Northern Knights in the opening match of the season. Saxton Oval in Nelson did not feature a single game in the last season of the Ford Trophy.
The last time Central Districts met Norhtern Knights was at the McLean Park in Napier. Central Districts successfully chased down 206-run target but lost 7 wickets on their way to victory. It was their second win against Northern Knights in the season.
Will Young from Central Districts made it to the World Cup squad and should be back with some confidence and more international experience. Northern Knights have a solid bowling attack that is capable of putting any batting side on the backfoot.
It should be a close contest between the two teams considering their overall squad strengths.
While Will Young maybe a star player in this squad, the openers have been among the top impact players for Central Districts. Ben Smith and Brad Schmulian will be tested at the top as they take on a strong and varied bowling attack of NK.
Both have a good record against Northern Knights and the skipper Tom Bruce will be expecting another good start from the opening duo. If they can get Will Young at number 3, CD will be evern stronger as he is followed by other reliable batters such as Dane Cleaver and Tom Bruce.
It is a solid batting order with each of the top 5 batters being a match-winner in their own right. Tom Bruce scoring fifties at number 5 gives Central Districts a huge advantage over the opposition.
They’ve also got a few handy all-rounders to add depth to the batting lineup but most of the impact will be made by the top 5 batters in this side. The bowling attack has got variety just like the opposition.
Raymond Toole will be one to watch out for. He’s got a knack for wickets and will be crucial in delivering timely breakthroughs. Brett Randell, Josh Clarkson, and left-arm orthodox Ajaz Patel are other key bowlers in this side.

Considering their squad strength, it was quite disappointing that Norhtern Knights should lose back to back matches to Central Districts in the last edition of The Ford Trophy.
They tick all the right boxes in every department with experienced and highly skilled batters and bowlers. They even had Kane Williamson playing at number 3, making his return to cricket after injury in their last one-day against CD.
Jeet Raval leading the side must have been a disappointed captain as most of the key batters failed to get going. Nevertheless, it’s a new season and Northern Knights will come here with new hope.
They’ve got Scott Kuggeleijn, Tim Pringle, and Frederick Walker in the bowling attack. All of them are brilliant wicket-takers and can turn the game on its head on thier best day.
What Northern Knights lacked last season was some consistent performances from the top order. Katene Clark and Tim Seifert need to live up to the expectations as openers while skipper Jeet Raval should hold that number 3 position to himself and take responsibility of building partnerships.
Joe Carter and Henry Cooper are key players in the middle-order. There is great depth in this lineup with Brett Hampton coming in at number 7 with big-hitting abilities.

It is one of the best batting pitches in the world. There will be a lot of runs on offer and openers in both teams will be licking their fingers. It will be mostly sunny in Nelson on the match day with a high of 20 degrees Celsius.
Saxton Oval in Nelson will host the opening match of The Ford Trophy 2023-24. It is high-scoring venue with a great batting wicket with average 1st innings score in ODIs being 284 runs. Anything below 300-330 will be easily chased down and team batting first needs to put on a massive total on the board to stay competitive.
Considering the face that team bowling first won 7 of the 10 ODIs played at this venue, we reckon both skippers will be looking to chase a target in this match.
It will be an exciting contest between two well-matched teams at the Saxton Oval. There are quality batters in both sides who will be looking to go out all guns blazing on a batting-friendly track. Toss will play a key role and team batting second will have an advantage. However, considering past records and the squad strength, Central Districts will start as favorites in our match prediction.
