Dambulla Giants’ big challenge against Colombo Stars
Colombo Stars to win
Tournament: Lanka Premier League 2021 | Format: T20 | Venue: R.Premadasa Stadium, Colombo, Sri Lanka | Toss: To Bowl
Bet NowThe Colombo Stars would be up against the Dambulla Giants in the 6th match of the Lanka Premier League 2021. The Stars have started well with a win against the Gladiators in the last game and they would look to continue with the same momentum in this game. The Giants on the other hand come into this contest after suffering a big loss against the Jaffna Kings.
The Dambulla Giants would be worried about the form of their bowlers as they have done poorly in both the games the side has played. It would be a big challenge for them against the Stars who have a very powerful batting line-up. It is still early days in the tournament and it would be interesting to see which side wins here.
Dhananjaya de Silva led his side to a clinical win in the last game against the Galle Gladiators. They bowled well to restrict the Gladiators to a small total and the side was clinical during the chase. The Stars’ skipper would like to see improvements from his top-order which had struggled in the last game. A win here would put them in a comfortable position for the rest of the season.
Tom Banton and Pathum Nissanka didn’t contribute much in the last game and they would have an important role to play here. Kusal Perera also went cheaply and the side would like to see a good show from him in the middle order with Sherfane Rutherford and de Silva. They have good hitters in Dinesh Chandimal and David Wiese which would add to the side’s confidence in this game.
Dushmantha Chameera and Dhananjaya de Silva were brilliant with the new ball in the last game and the same would be expected from them. Akila Dhanajaya used the conditions to his advantage along with Seekkuge Prasanna making them a lethal pair in the middle overs. The side has good depth in this department with Naveen-ul-Haq and Wiese in the side.

It was a poor effort with the bat by Dasun Shanaka’s side in the last game against Jaffna Kings that saw them go down by 8 wickets. The Giants’ skipper would be upset with himself having disturbed the combination that has delivered a win in the opening game of the season. They would face a tough challenge against Colombo Kings who have already shown good form and better efforts would be needed from the team here.
Phillip Salt and Niroshan Dickwella shall need to provide a good start as they did well in the earlier game and have their range of strokes. The middle-order is yet to strike form and the side would need runs from Nuwanidu Fernando, Lahiru Udara, and Shanaka. In Najibullah Zadran, Chamika Karunaratne and Ramesh Mendis they have powerful strikers of the ball to follow.
Their bowling attack has looked in poor shape in both the games played so far. Imran Tahir and Marchant de Lange made good use of their experience in the last game and the side would need them to deliver the goods. Mendis, Karunaratne, and Nuwan Pradeep leaked runs and they have to do well as the side doesn’t have much depth in its bowling.

There would be a thin cloud cover over the skins of Colombo on December 8. The surface is flat and there isn’t much in there for the bowlers. Batsmen can play the ball on the up and we have seen big scores already in the tournament. The side batting first shall need to aim at a score of 170-180 runs under these conditions.
R. Premadasa Stadium, Colombo is a good venue for batsmen. They can play their strokes easily and they are aided by the flat surface and the fast outfield. It is a very tough venue for the fast bowlers as the wicket doesn’t offer them any support. Spinners enjoy good assistance from the track as the ball tends to turn sharply.
It would be an afternoon game and batting conditions are expected to be excellent at the start of the game. Most teams have batted first in these conditions and put up big scores on the board. The side winning the toss in this game would have little hesitation in opting to bat first.
The Dambulla Giants come here with a big loss. The side is struggling with the ball, and this would be a major headache as they take on a very strong batting line-up. Their batsmen would also have to come out of the shocking performance in the last game. The Colombo Stars put up a clinical show in the last game and this would add to their confidence. They have good depth with the bat and the ball, and this would put them ahead of the Giants.
