It is the grand final of the Tamil Nadu Premier League, 2022. The defending champions Chepauk Super Gillies would be taking on the Lyca Kovai Kings for the 6th title of the tournament. The Super Gillies defeated the Nellai Royal Kings to make their entry into the final. The Kovai Kings who have gained form in the most crucial phase won a thriller against Royal Kings to enter the final for the first time.   

The Chepauk Super Gilles has won the trophy in the last two editions of the tournament, and they have big-match players on the side. They would look to make it a hattrick of titles in this game. The Kovai Kings have a mountain to climb as their record against the Super Gillies hasn’t been great. However, this would be a big-ticket contest and both sides would be under pressure to perform.

Kaushik Gandhi’s side has made it to the final for the third time in a row. This would be the fifth occasion the side is in the final in six editions of the tournament. It was a clinical effort from them in the 1st Qualifier against the Nellai Royal Kings which they won by 5 wickets. Their players can absorb pressure in a big-ticket contest and Gandhi would aim for the third consecutive title win in this game.  

Kaushik Gandhi has done well at the top and he would look for a solid opening wicket stand with N Jagadeesan. S Radhakrishnan missed out in the last game, and he will have to do well at No. 3 and build partnerships with the likes of Ravisrinivasan Sai Kishore and Uthirasamy Sasidev. Rajagopal Sathish and S Harish Kumar are powerful strikers of the ball and make this batting line-up rock solid.  

Their bowlers have been consistent in the last few games. Manimaran Siddharth and Sandeep Warrier shall like to put pressure on the Kovai Kings with tight spells in the early overs. Sonu Yadav and R Alexander shall need to keep the scoring under check in the middle overs as their opponents have good firepower. Sonu Yadav and Harish Kumar make it a well-balanced attack.

Shahrukh Khan led from the front to power his side’s entry into the final. In a thrilling contest against the Nellai Royal Kings that saw the balance shifting, the Kovai Kings won off the last ball of the game. This 2-wicket win shall make them confident. However, Khan would like his bowlers to come up with better performance as they play against a strong batting line-up.  

Openers Ganga Sridhar Raju and Suresh Kumar have been consistent, and the side would need a strong opening wicket stand from them. In the middle order, Shahrukh Khan and Sai Sudarshan are in good form and they would aim to add runs with Shijit Chauhan. The side would also expect U Mukilesh and Abhishek Tanwar to do the heavy lifting towards the end as they would need a big score to challenge the Super Gillies.  

Their bowlers would be under pressure after an ordinary show in the last game. The side would like to see Tanwar and Manish Ravi put pressure on Super Gillies’ top order. S Ajith Ram has bowled well in this tournament, and he will have to come up with a good effort in this game. There is a forecast for rain in Coimbatore on July 31 and we might see rain interruptions during the final. The wicket would have some assistance for the fast bowlers, but batsmen would enjoy playing their strokes. It will be a high-pressure contest and a score in the range of 170 runs would be a good total to defend.

Venue Details

SNR College Cricket Ground, Coimbatore is a small ground and has short boundaries. It is a great venue for the batsmen as the ball comes to the bat nicely. There is some assistance on this wicket for the fast bowlers early in the game in overcast conditions. Spinners get the ball to turn but the small size of the venue makes it a tough venue for them.

In the last three games played at this venue, the side chasing the score has won the games. We expect to see a close contest between the two sides, but the nature of the surface would make it easy to chase even big scores. Hence, the side winning the toss in this game would have little hesitation in bowling first.
