The Derbyshire Falcons have been all over the place this season, barely managing to keep themselves alive in the tournament. After 9 matches, the Falcons are 6th on the table with 3 wins and 6 losses and a poor NRR of -0.382. While they did manage a good win against Warwickshire in their last match, they will need something special to continue that momentum. Derbyshire’s next assignment is against Nottinghamshire who are 2nd on the table with 4 wins and 1 loss and a NRR of +1.092. The Notts have already beaten the Falcons once this season and will begin as favorites for this game.

Derbyshire Preview

After being on a 3-match losing streak, the Derbyshire Falcons finally managed a win as they defeated Warwickshire by 5 wickets in their last match.

After restricting Warwickshire to 167-9, Derbyshire chased the target down in 19.1 overs with 5 wickets in hand. The stars of the chase were Thomas Wood (63* off 48 balls) and Leus du Plooy (57 off 34 balls). Du Plooy has been the leading run-getter for the Falcons this season with 345 runs at 49.28. He’s followed by opener Luis Reece who has contributed 253 runs at 28.11. The others in the unit haven’t done much and the likes of captain Matthew Critchle and Harry Came need to do a lot more. Wood’s form in the last is a good sign.

Derbyshire’s bowling has been largely revolving around seamers George Scrimshaw (13 wickets at an economy of 7.52) and Logan van Beek (13 wickets at an economy of 9.29). Scrimshaw was excellent in the last match as well with a spell of 3-23. Fynn Hudson-Prentice (13 wickets at an economy of 9.88) has also been impressive but the problem with this bowling unit has been that most of the bowlers have been on the expensive side.

Derbyshire Predicted Playing XI:

Luis Reece, Harry Came, Thomas Wood, Leus du Plooy, Matthew Critchley (c), Fynn Hudson-Prentice, Brooke Guest (wk), Matt McKiernan, Logan van Beek, Conor McKerr, George Scrimshaw

Nottinghamshire Preview

The Notts Outlaws have had a great time at the Vitality Blast 2021 so far. They have lost just one game in their 7 matches and are sitting pretty at the 2nd spot in the North Group. They have been involved in 2 tied games and had either of them gone their way, the Notts could easily have been at the top. They are coming off a comprehensive 10-wicket win against Worcestershire in their last match and are oozing in confidence. After restricting Worcestershire for just 86-8 in their 20 overs, Nottinghamshire chased the target down in just 6.2 overs without losing a wicket.

It was an incredible bowling performance and was set by left-arm spinner Samit Patel’s spell of 3-4 in 4 overs. Patel has been really impressive for the Notts at the start and has gone at an economy of just 6.20. Jake Ball has been the other standout bowler for Nottinghamshire with 10 wickets at an economy of 10.93 along with Matthew Carter who has 9 wickets at 7.50. With Luke Fletcher and captain Steven Mullaney also contributing regularly, this bowling unit looks in pretty good shape.

On the batting front, the team looks pretty good. The chief performers for them so far have been openers Joe Clarke (240 runs at 40) and Alex Hales (234 runs at 46.80) along with Ben Duckett (182 runs at 36.40).

Nottinghamshire Predicted Playing XI:

Joe Clarke, Alex Hales, Soloman Budinger, Ben Duckett, Tom Moores (wk), Samit Patel, Steven Mullaney (c), Luke Fletcher, Calvin Harrison, Matthew Carter, Jake Ball

Weather Conditions

The County Ground in Derby is a good batting deck which usually remains true throughout. Bowlers too will get some help at the start. Off-spinners and orthodox spinners have had an economy of under 7.5 on this venue.

Rain is on the radar at Derby today and we can have a truncated game because of it.

Venue Details

The average first innings score at Derby in the T20 Blast is 161 but the average first innings winning score here is 177. The highest total achieved here in the tournament is a massive 249-8 by Hampshire against Derbyshire in 2017.

Toss: To Bowl

Chasing on this venue has yielded better results this season and it’s likely that the team winning the toss would opt to bat second.

The last 4 completed matches between Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire, have all been won by the Notts. It shows how dominant they have been and given the way they have played this season, it looks like their winning streak will continue. The Notts have already beaten Derbyshire once this season and are looking in good shape in all departments. Derbyshire has been inconsistent and their batting isn’t in the best of form. Even though Derbyshire will be playing at home, the Notts begin as favorites for this game.

Back Nottinghamshire to clinch this match.
