The Dambulla Giants would be taking on the Galle Gladiators in the 8th game of the Lanka Premier League 2021. Both sides come into this contest with wins in their previous games. The Giants defeated the Colombo Stars in their last game which would add to their confidence while the Galle Gladiators come here with a win against the Kandy Warriors. 

The Dambulla Giants’ bowling form has been poor and in all three games, the side has bowled at high economy rates. This is something that would be worrying the side going into this contest. Dasun Shanaka’s side put up a strong show in the last game. They defeated the Colombo Stars by 18 runs in a high-scoring game. Their batsmen did well to set up a big score on the board. However, Shanaka would be worried about the form of his bowlers as they have been in poor form in all the games played so far. The Gladiators also come here with a massive win and the Giants’ skipper would look for a determined effort from his players. 

Phillip Salt and Niroshan Dickwella are in good form and the side would expect to see a good start from them. Dilshan Munaweera and Sohaib Maqsood went out cheaply and the side would need a good show from them in this game. Najibullah Zadran, Shanaka, and Chamika Karunaratne are good hitters of the ball, and this would add to the side’s confidence with the bat. 

The form of their bowlers would be worrying the side and they would like to see tight spells and early wickets from Chamika Karunaratne and Nuwan Pradeep. Tharindu Ratnayake bowled great spells in the last game and he would look to carry on with his form in this game. However, the side would need Imran Tahir to play an important role here along with Ramesh Mendis making good use of the conditions.

Bhanuka Rajapaksa’s side comes here with a 4-wicket win against the Kandy Warriors. This win has put the side back on track after they went down in the previous game. They bowled well to keep the Warriors to a mediocre total and after initial hiccups chased the score comfortably. The Giants are a good batting side and Rajapaksa would like to see good efforts from his bowlers. 

The opening pair of Danushka Gunathilaka and Kusal Mendis did well in the last game and the same would be expired from them here. The middle-order has good experience with Mohammad Hafeez, Ben Dunk, and Rajapaksa on the side and all three would have to play important roles. Samit Patel is a good hitter and adds punch to the lower middle order along with Lahiru Maudshanka and Dhananjaya Lakshan. 

Samit Patel was incredible with the new ball in the last game and along with Nuwan Thushara he would look to strike early in the game given Giants’ powerful top order. In Hafeez and Dhananjaya Lakshan they have bowlers who would enjoy bowling in these conditions. Noor Ahmed and Suminda Lakshan must play the supporting act well in this game.

There would be thick clouds over Colombo on December 10 and there are predictions for rain disruptions during the game. We have seen a flat surface so far where batsmen have enjoyed their stay at the crease. Under these conditions, the side batting first would need 160-170 runs on the board to feel comfortable.

R. Premadasa Stadium, Colombo has been a good hunting ground for batsmen as the wicket allows them to play their strokes and they are aided by the fast outfield. The conditions here are extremely challenging for fast bowlers with little on the surface for them. Spinners enjoy the conditions here as there is sharp turn on offer.

Big scores have been made at this venue this season and the wicket has been a good one to bat on. It is an afternoon game and batting conditions would be best at the start of the game. The side winning the toss here would look to take advantage of the conditions by batting first.
