Well, the wait is over for the second phase of the inaugural SA20. After a short break due to the ongoing bilateral ODI series between South Africa and England, the SA20 will resume with Durban Super Giants hosting MI Cape Town at Kingsmead, Durban on 2nd February from 9:00 pm. With both teams placed at the bottom of the points table, this will be a crucial game to keep their place alive for the playoffs.
Durban Super Giants have won just two out of the 7 games played before the break. They are currently in sixth place with 8 points. They are struggling to find the win. In the last game, they lost to Joburg Super Kings by 8 wickets even after registering 178 runs on the board. Henrich Klassen’s fifty was outshined by the Super Kings skipper Faf du Plessis's unbeaten hundred.
MI Cape Town also suffered a loss before the break against the Pretoria Capitals. Batting first, the Capitals set a target of 183 runs for the MICT. Rashid Khan and Jofra Archer took 3 wickets each for MICT. MI’s middle order failed to capitalize the start provided by Dewald Brewis (46). MICT lost the game by 52 runs. They are currently in fifth place with 13 points in 7 games.
MICT hosted Durban Super Giants in the 5th game of the SA20. Batting first, MICT scored 152 runs for the loss of 8 wickets. Wicket-keeper batter Grant Roelofsen scored a half-century in the game for MICT. DSG chased the target in just 17 overs with 5 wickets in hand. Olly Stone took 4 wickets for 28 runs yet failed to restrict DSG.
This is a do-or-die game for the Durban Super Giants, especially when they will be facing Pretoria Capitals and Sunrisers Eastern Cape next. Hopefully, the break has provided enough time for the team to look into the drawbacks. Kyle Mayres and Wiaan Mulder will open the innings for Durban Super Giants. Mayers was the player of the match in the DSG’s game against the MICT. He has scored 163 runs in 7 games at a strike rate of 133.60.
Quinton de Kock needs to channel international exposure to help his team out of the scenario. De Kock has scored 2 half-centuries in 7 games for DSG. All eyes will be on Henrich Klassen, who is so far DSG’s best batter. Klassen is currently the fourth leading run-scorer of the tournament with 259 runs at a strike rate of 148 with three half-centuries. Two of these half-centuries have come in the last four games, which DSG has lost.
Reece Topley will lead the bowling attack for the DSG. Topley has 7 wickets in 5 games at an economy of 8.50. He will get help from all-rounder Dwayne Pretorius and Prenelan Subreyan, who have taken 6 wickets each. DSG should consider utilizing Mayers more with the ball. He is the only bowler with an economy of less than 6 for DSG. Spin has been DSG’s concern this season. Keshav Maharaj has bowled 20 overs but has averaged 53, taking just 3 wickets.
Key Players: Quinton de Kock, Henrich Klassen, Reece Topley.
Kyle Mayers, Matthew Breetzke, Quinton de Kock (c & wk), Wiaan Mulder, Heinrich Klaasen, Dwayne Pretorius, Keemo Paul, Simon Harmer, Hardus Viljoen, Keshav Maharaj, Reece Topley

MI Cape Town was regarded as the title challenger before the start of the tournament, with the big names in the team. Yet they failed to get close to the top spot in the first schedule of the SA20. One of the key reasons behind their shocking results was the slow batting. No MICT top-order batters have a strike rate of more than 125, except for George Linde. Linde has scored 134 runs in the middle at a strike rate of 167.50.
The next batter who comes close regarding consistency is MICT opener Dewald Brewis. Brewis is the leading run-scorer for MICT, with 181 runs at a strike rate of 118.30. MICT has added Tim David as a replacement for Liam Livingstone. David, who is known for his hard-hitting all over the world, has a strike rate of 162.88 in 152 games. David also played for MI in the IPL, scoring 186 runs last season in 8 matches at a strike rate of 216.28.
Jofra Archer and Rashid Khan will lead the MICT’s bowling attack. Both have taken 8 wickets each for MICT. But economy-wise, Khan (6.92) has performed better than Archer (7.57). He is our choice for the top bowler. MICT’s bowling unit is one of the top units of the tournament, with almost everyone giving less than 8 runs. Surprisingly ICC World T20’s player of the tournament, Sam Curran, has given more than 9 runs per over, claiming just three wickets. MICT will miss Olly Stone due to international duties. Henry Brookes has been added as his replacement.
Key Players: Dewald Brewis, Rashid Khan, Tim David.
Ryan Rickelton, Dewald Brevis, Grant Roelofsen (wk), Rassie van der Dussen, Tim David, George Linde, Sam Curran, Rashid Khan (c), Odean Smith, Jofra Archer, Kagiso Rabada
Timothy David, Rassie van der Dussen, Delano Potgieter, Dewald Brevis, Grant Roelofsen, George Linde, Rashid Khan, Kagiso Rabada, Duan Jansen, Odean Smith, Beuran Hendricks
The weather will be cloudy, with expected thunderstorms in the day's second half. The outfield will be damp with rain expectations on the earlier day. The temperature will range between 23 and 30°C. The wind will be flowing from the west at 15-25 kmh. The pitch offers a good amount of bounce for the pacers. The outfield is expected to be quicker.
The 23rd T20 will be played at Kingsmead, Durban, on 2nd February from 9:00 pm onwards. The venue holds a capacity of 25000 spectators and has hosted 46 Tests, 50 ODIs & 18 T20Is so far. Durban Super Giants have recorded the highest (218) as well as the lowest (80) score on this venue.
In all 18 Men’s T20Is, the team batting first has won the game 9 times while teams have successfully chased the target on 7 occasions. The average first innings score is 148 - 16 more than the second innings. Two of the three SA20 games played at this venue have been won by the team batting first. The team winning the toss should bat first.
With both teams struggling, it will be a nail-biting game for sure. DSG are currently without a win in the last four games. Though the break has given them enough time to correct their shortcomings, the question will be about the team's morale. They have lost two of the three games played at Durban.
On the other hand, MICT has a slight advantage over the hosts. They have a heavy batting lineup followed by one of the best bowling attacks of the tournament. Plus, the addition of Tim David has boosted their chances.
We predict that MI Cape Town will defeat Durban Super Giants.
