Durham will be facing Glamorgan for the second time this season. Their last encounter ended in a draw at the Sophia Gardens in Cardiff. This time around, we expect there to be a result as these two teams lock horns at Riverside Ground in Chester-le-Street.

The venue has seen some great bowling performances this season and Durham’s Potts and Raine are among the leading wicket-takers at this venue. Ben Raine’s unbeaten 50 off 114 balls in Durham’s last match here helped them secure a 1-wicket victory over Yorkshire.

Glamorgan were bowled out for 123 runs in the 1st innings of their last match. However they bounced back in the 2nd innings posting a 737-run total on the back of hundreds from Labuschagne, Carlson, and Neser.

While Labuschagne and Neser won’t be available for this match, Kiran Carlson would be confident coming into this match. Timm van der Gugten and Michael Neser are among the consistent wicket-takers for Glamorgan in the recent outings.

Durham Preview

Durham will be keen on maintaining an unbeaten record at their home venue as they take on Glamorgan for the second time this season. The opposition will be missing a few key players from both departments and that may give Durham the confidence to attack on all fronts.

Matthew Potts and Ben Raine will be the key players for Durham if they are to secure a 4th consecutive win. These two need to deliver breakthroughs throughout the innings. Glamorgan has a deep batting lineup and it will take a special effort from Durham’s bowling attack to bowl them out twice in the match.

Ajaz Patel is another key bowler to watch out for in this lineup. The left-arm orthodox bowler picked 10 wickets as Durham beat Gloucestershire by 125 runs at Bristol in their last match.

Alex Lees and Michael Jones are in good shape at the top and will be expected to give a good start. Though it may not be as easy to bat on this surface, Durham have some reliable batters in the middle order.

Skipper Scott Brothwick at number 3 and David Bedingham at number 4 are crucial for building partnerships in case the home team lose early wickets. In the lower middle-order Durham have Oliver Robinson and Graham Clark both of whom have scored a hundred in the last couple of matches.

Durham Predicted Playing XI:

Alex Lees, Michael Jones, Scott Borthwick (c), David Bedingham, Oliver Robinson (wk), Graham Clark, Ben Raine, Paul Coughlin, Bas de Leede, Matthew Potts, Ajaz Patel

Glamorgan Preview

Kiran Carlson must be happy with the way his team bounced back in the last match after being bowled out for just 123 runs in the first innings. He was the top-scorer for the side in the 2nd innings scoring 192 runs at number 5.

Glamorgan will be missing Marnus Labuschagne and Michael Neser as the two joined Australia for the WTC final. Daniel Doutwaite can come in for Neser while there are a couple of options to replace Labuschagne.

The veteran batsman Colin Ingram can make his way back to the side or Glamorgan can also go with David Lloyd. In any case it will not be easy to fill in the shoes of the two Aussies. Lloyd was the skipper for Glamorgan until their last match and is likely to come back as the captain for this game.

He will open the innings alongside Edward Byrom who’s looked in good touch in recent games. Sam Northeast is crucial at number 3 and will be expected to build a partnership with the in-form Kiran Carlson. The lower middle order is also solid with the likes of C Cooke and Billy Root finding their form.

Glamorgan will need a new match-winner in the absence of Labuschagne in the batting lineup. Whereas, in the bowling department, Neser was consistently delivering for the team and now Timm van der Gugten will need a new partner in the bowling department.

Glamorgan Predicted Playing XI:

David Lloyd (c), Edward Byrom, Zain-ul-Hassan, Sam Northeast, Kiran Carlson, Billy Root, Chris Cooke (wk), Daniel Douthwaite, Timm van der Gugten, James Harris, Jamie McIlroy

Weather Conditions

The pitch has been ideal for batting in Tests but in the recent games, there has been help for the bowlers. It will be a good contest between bat and ball as the game progresses. The weather will be partly cloudy with a high of 22 degrees Celsius.

Venue Details

The average 1st innings score at Riverside Ground in Tests is 352 runs. Even in the 3d innings the average score is 295 indicating that the venue is ideal for batting. The pitch may start assisting the bowlers as the game progresses and we reckon the team batting first should look for 350+ score to put themselves in a good position.

Toss: To Bat

Team batting first here has won 4 of the 6 Tests played. It is a good batting venue where chasing can be quite challenging. In recent games bowlers enjoyed great success here and both teams will be keen on making most of the conditions early in the game and hence, opt to bat first.

Durham are in sublime form winning the last 4 consecutive matches and all of the games played on this ground so far. Glamorgan have also been in great touch though they’ve managed to win just the one Test so far. However, the visitors will be missing two of their biggest impact players and this can disturb their overall balance. The home team will have the advantage coming into this match considering the overall form of their key players and the home ground. Durham will start as favourites in our match prediction.
