While the 1st day of Super 12 will be headlined by the Trans Tasmanian rivalry, an almost one-sided contest will unfold in Perth. Fans may feel it’s unfair to call it a one-sided affair as there are some really talented players in the Afghanistan squad.
Afghanistan restricted Sri Lanka and Bangladesh to a low total in the recent Asia Cup and chased down the target with ease. Earlier, they did the same on their tour of Zimbabwe where they won the T20I series 3-0.
A lot depends on the bowlers for Afghanistan as they take on the mighty English batting order. England has a deep batting lineup with many big-hitting and in-form batters.
This will be Afghanistan’s first T20I at Perth where England scored 208 runs batting first earlier this month. As such, Rashid Khan and Mujeeb Ur Rahman will be in key roles to put the opposition on the back foot.
A 3-4 series win in Pakistan followed by a 2-0 win in Australia have put the momentum on England’s side. They also won the warm-up match against Pakistan chasing down 163 runs in just 15 overs.
Harry Brook and Sam Curran proved how valuable they can be lower down the order with their significant contributions in the run chase. Jos Buttler and Alex Hales are the perfect opening pair for England. On their best day, the two can take the match away in the powerplay itself.
If England were to chase against Afghanistan, the top order can put them on top of the game in the first half of the innings. The middle order of Dawid Malan, Ben Stokes, and Liam Livingstone also features reliable and experienced T20 batters.
If Livingstone gets going, he is another potential match-winner for England. Sam Curran, Chris Woakes, and David Willey can all score quick runs lower down the order. However, the big name in the lower middle order is Moeen Ali. The batting all-rounder has a knack for hitting sixes and adds more strength to England’s batting lineup.
Watch out for Sam Curran, Willey, and Mark Wood to make an impact with the ball. The all-rounders in the side give Buttler a variety in the bowling attack to experiment with.

Mohammad Nabi looks in great touch with the bat ahead of the Super 12. The captain carries a great amount of experience and will be a key player. Nabi has also played plenty of T20 cricket in the Vitality Blast in England where he was a match-finisher for Kent on many occasions.
Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Hazratullah Zazai will open the innings for Afghanistan. Zazai hasn’t looked in his best touch lately and struggled to play his strokes freely even during the Asia Cup.
He failed to get going in both the warm-up matches along with his partner Gurbaz. The positives for Afghanistan ahead of this match are the players in the lower order who can deliver quick runs.
Mohammad Nabi and Usman Ghani are the key players for Afghanistan at 6 and 7 while Rashid Khan can come in at number 8 and deliver a few quick sixes. So, there is great potential when it comes to finishing the innings on a high or chasing down a total successfully.
However, what Afghanistan also needs are partnerships at the top or in the middle order. They can’t always expect the lower order to step up and get them to a par total every time.
The likes of Darwish Rasooli and Najibullah Zadran will be the ones to watch out for in the middle order. Rashid Khan, Mujeeb Ur Rahman, and Naveen-ul-Haq will be key players in the bowling attack.

The pitch at the Perth Stadium offers great bounce and pace and will be ideal for both batters and fast bowlers. In the early overs, the pacers can enjoy the bounce off the pitch while later on, the batters can play their strokes freely and score runs at ease. The weather will be mostly sunny on the match day with a high of 23 degrees Celsius.
The average 1st innings score at the Perth Stadium is 167 runs. Teams have scored over 170 runs 13 times from 21 matches at this venue. We can expect a high-scoring encounter with some of the best power-hitting batters on both teams.
Teams batting first at this venue have won 13 of the 21 domestic T20s played at this venue. England also successfully defended a 208 runs total in their last T20I match at this ground. Both teams will be keen on electing to bat first and put up a competitive total if they win the toss.
England has a strong overall T20 setup with all of their best players in the squad. From all-rounders to big-hitting openers and match-finishers, England have it all. The opposition, on the other hand, have some promising players in the bowling attack. And their out-of-form batters at the top are likely to benefit from the pitch conditions at this venue. While we expect a good fight from Afghanistan, England will be our favourite in the match prediction.
Our prediction is for England to win the match
