The stage is set for the final Test of the Basil D’Oliveira Trophy between England and South Africa. The third test of the series will be played at The Oval stadium between 8 - 12 September from 3:30 pm onwards. South Africa couldn’t defend a 1-0 lead after losing the second Test by an innings and 85 runs.

Batting first, South Africa were 92 for 7 at one stage. Kagiso Rabada’s 36 runs helped them reach 151 runs at the end of the innings. Anderson and Broad took 3 wickets each. England also had a rocky start at the beginning. But resistance from Zak Crawley and Jonny Bairstow followed by centuries from skipper Ben Stokes and keeper Ben Foakes secured a 264-run lead for England. Ollie Robinson and Anderson then broke SA’s hope to draw the game by taking 4 and 3 wickets respectively. Stokes was named player of the match for his century and 4 wickets with the ball.

With the victory, England tied the series 1-1. This was England’s fourth win in the last 5 Tests played against South Africa. If SA loses the Test, they will lose their second spot in the ICC World Test Championship points table. But a win will take them to the number one spot and a step closer to the final to be played next year. On the other hand, England is currently in the seventh spot on the points table with a slim chance to make it to the final.

England Preview

Skipper Ben Stokes inspired England with his all-round performance in the second Test. His next task will be to win the final Test and to keep the unbeaten record against South Africa intact for the last 10 years. Stokes scored his 12th century and 4th against SA after England was reduced to 147 for 5. He put a 173 runs partnership with Ben Foakes who also scored his second century (113). It was the English middle-order who saved them in the second Test. But they will be without Jonny Bairstow who suffered a lower limb injury while playing golf. Ben Duckett has been called as his replacement. Harry Brook can be handed over his Test debut.

The opening slot is still a problem for England. Though Zak Crawley showed positive intent in his 38 runs knock off 101 balls, he and Alex Lees hasn’t been consistent for England. Ollie Pope will be playing his 30th Test, but his average is 30. It's high time for him to justify his number three position. ICC Test Championship’s leading run scorer Joe Root hasn’t crossed a single-digit figure in this series. He has 23 runs in the three innings. But Root is England’s active leading run scorer against SA with 1187 runs at an average of 47.48.

The pace attack was up to the point for England in the second Test. They took 19 wickets. While Anderson took 6 and Robinson took 5, Broad and Stokes took 4 wickets each in the two innings. In fact, Ben Stokes's fiery spell that broke the 87 runs stand between Peterson and Van der Dussen proved crucial to making a loud comeback. Anderson made a record by taking 100 Test wickets against SA in the second Test.

Key Players: Joe Root, Ben Stokes, Ollie Robinson.

England Predicted Playing XI:

Alex Lees, Zak Crawley, Ollie Pope, Joe Root, Jonny Bairstow, Ben Stokes (c), Ben Foakes (wk), Stuart Broad, Ollie Robinson, Jack Leach, James Anderson

South Africa Preview

An injury to skipper Dean Elgar has been turning into a hurdle in SA’s quest to get their hands on the trophy. Looks like he will be playing. Elgar has 889 runs against England - most by him against any Test-playing nation at an average of 35. He will open with Sarel Erwee. Keegan Peterson at number three will be ideal for SA after his 42 runs in the second Test. Peterson has a half-century in every 4 innings he played. Aiden Markram’s form is worrisome for SA. Markram hasn’t scored a half-century or a century since June 2021. His average is just above 12 since then.

SA’s middle-order is less experienced. And playing with 5 specialist bowlers has put reverse pressure on the middle order. Van der Dussen and Verreyenne have a collective average of 31. Though 50% of Dussen’s fifties have come against England, he hasn’t scored one in the last 7 Tests. Similar to Dussen’s run, Verreyenne hasn’t been up to the mark and has 144 runs in the last 7 innings.

Rabada, Nortje, and Ngidi will be the leading trio for SA. Rabada has 61 wickets in 11 Tests against England. Unfortunately, Ngidi has taken just 2 wickets in the 3 innings of this series.  SA Played two spinners -  Maharaj and Harmer in the second Test. Though they took 3 wickets in the first innings, both have the worst averages against England. Marco Jansen should be brought back as he adds a little stability with the bat too.

Key Players: Kagan Peterson, Kagiso Rabada, Anrich Nortje.

South Africa Predicted Playing XI:

Dean Elgar (c), Sarel Erwee, Keegan Petersen, Aiden Markram, Rassie van der Dussen, Kyle Verreynne (wk), Simon Harmer, Keshav Maharaj, Kagiso Rabada, Anrich Nortje, Lungi Ngidi

Weather Conditions

The weather will be mostly cloudy with chances of rain on all days. The temperature will range between 14 and 23°C. The wind will be flowing from the west at 13-15 kmh. The Oval pitch is flat and favors batters. The boundaries are shorter and there is no extra bounce offered by the pitch. The faster outfield makes batters' jobs easier.

Venue Details

The 3rd Test between England and South Africa will be played at The Oval. London The venue holds a capacity of 23500 spectators and has hosted 103 tests, 76 ODIs & 16 T20I so far. It is the home ground for Surrey Cricket Club. England has registered tier highest innings score on this ground - 903 for 7.

Toss: To Bat

In 103 Tests, teams have successfully defended the target on 38 occasions. While team chasing the target has won on 28 occasions.  In the last 4 Tests, teams have come victorious after batting first. Therefore team winning the toss should bat first.

England have 4 victories in the last 5 Tests played against South Africa. They have won the last three bilateral Test series played since 2012. Though SA is in the second spot of the ICC WTC with 6 wins and 3 losses, England has five wins in the last six Tests. Joe Root has 2 centuries and 3 half-centuries at this venue. It will be a tough game for both sides as they will be playing in wet conditions.

We predict that England will defeat South Africa.
