In search of the first win of the new season, Essex will face Kent at County Ground in Chelmsford on 11th August. Kent, on the other side, despite performing well with the batting unit, couldn’t manage to register a win in the last 2 games except against Worcestershire.
With 1 win from 3 games they played so far, Kent placed themselves at the 7th position in the points table of group B with 2 points whereas Essex are yet to register a win and are at the 8th place in the same group with just 1 point which they grabbed because of the abandonment of the first game.
The competition is getting tougher day by day and to remain in the race of qualification to the knockout stage, both teams need to win the game. Essex would like to claim their first points of the season whereas Kent would like to convert the team’s good form into a favorable result for them.
After washing out of the first game against Lancashire, Essex have lost 2 back to back games against Derbyshire and Northamptonshire respectively. They have a chance to break the losing streak against Kent in the next fixture on 11th August while playing in home conditions.
The batting order’s collapse against Derbyshire cost them a game by a huge margin of 92 runs but they made a strong comeback with their batting unit in the last match against Northamptonshire. Captain’s decision to bat first was justified by the batting unit and they set up 343 runs on the board in 50 overs. Feroze Khushi scored a brilliant century and contributed 118 runs from 93 balls to the team’s score.
Captain Tom Westley handled the middle order and played a 67-run knock from 69 balls. Though they have set up a decent total on the board, this time the team's bowling unit cost them a game while defending a target of 344 runs. Despite Aaron Beard’s 3 wickets for 65 runs and Jamal Richards’ 2 wickets for 37 runs, no other bowler could manage to put pressure on opponents and Essex got defeated in the last over.
The overall squad has good depth in the batting as well as a bowling unit but they failed to utilize their strengths combined so far this season. To tackle the challenge of Kent and open up the points account they need to work on their strengths on Thursday at Chelmsford.
Feroze Khushi, Tom Westley, Shane Snater, Jamal Richards.

The same old story of the last season continues for Kent as although the team’s batting unit is performing well under the leadership of Ollie Robinson, they have failed to convert that into favorable results for their team. The team’s next fixture is up against Essex on Thursday at County ground in Chelmsford.
After registering a comfortable 7-wicket win over Worcestershire in the first match and losing a close encounter against Glamorgan in the next match, Kent got defeated by a huge margin of 163 runs against Hampshire in the last match. Alex Blake asked opponents to bat first and Hampshire took advantage of the situation to put 396 runs on the board by thrashing Kent’s bowlers.
While chasing the target of 397 runs, Kent started the chase well but couldn't manage to make partnerships in the middle order. Captain Alex Blake scored 62 runs from 43 balls but he didn’t get any support from the middle order and Kent lost the game by 163 runs. This huge defeat once again cleared that Kent are heavily dependent on their top-order batters like Ollie Robinson and Alex Blake.
Kent have a solid batting order but they need to work on their bowling unit. Failure of the bowling department cost them games in the last season and this season as well. Kent will try to execute their bowling plans against Essex in the upcoming match on 11th August.
Ollie Robinson, Alex Blake, Nathan Gilchrist, Matt Quinn.
Ben Compton, Tawanda Muyeye, Ollie Robinson (wk), Joey Evison, George Linde, Grant Stewart, Alex Blake (c), Hamidullah Qadri, Matt Quinn, Nathan Gilchrist, Navdeep Saini.
The weather will be clear on match day. The maximum and minimum temperatures will be in the 33°C - 16°C range.
County Ground in Chelmsford will host this match. This ground is considered a home ground of the Essex side and has conducted many domestic games. This stadium can accommodate a total of 6500 people.
This ground has offered an advantage to bowlers in a few previous domestic matches. The team who has opted to bowl first here has delivered better than the batting team. At this location, whichever team wins the toss will want to bowl first and chase.
Although Kent’s batters are looking in good form, the team’s bowling unit has struggled in the tournament so far. Essex on the other side have a balanced squad and they have an upper hand over Kent as far as the bowling unit is concerned. They will try to put pressure on Kent’s bowlers and try to claim the first win of the season.
We predict that Essex will defeat Kent.
