The Dambulla Giants would be facing a tough challenge as they take on the Jaffna Kings in the 14th game of the Lanka Premier League 2021. The Giants registered a thrilling win in the last game against the Colombo Stars after nearly giving it away. The Jaffna Kings have been in good form and come here with an easy win against the Kandy Warriors.

It has been four wins in a row for the Jaffna Kings and the side has been demolishing opponents. They had defeated the Giants by a big margin earlier and this would add to their confidence. It would be interesting to see Giants’ approach in this game and whether they can bring the Kings’ juggernaut to a halt.

It was a thrilling win for Dasun Shanaka’s side in the last game against the Colombo Stars. The side snatched the win from the jaws of defeat. Their bowlers held their nerves in the final stages of the game to win by 1 run. It would be a tougher battle against the Jaffna Kings considering the form the side is in and Shanaka would like to see his side give their best here.

Phillip Salt and Niroshan Dickwella have batted well and the side would need a determined effort from them in this game. In the middle order Tharindu Ratnayake, Shoaib Maqsood, and Najibullah Zadran will need to build partnerships. The side has good hitters of the ball down the order in Shanaka, Chamika Karunaratne, and Ramesh Mendis and they would need to add quick runs in the final overs.

Tharindu Ratnayake and Mendis bowled well in the last game and the side would expect to see tight spells from them as the Kings have a strong batting line-up. Imran Tahir worked his magic well and pulled the side back into the game. Nuwan Pradeep has to bowl better lines at the death after his poor show against the Stars. The side would also expect good supporting acts from Sachin Jayathilake and Chamika Karunaratne

Thisara Perera’s side is enjoying a good run in the tournament. They have won the last four games in a row and have become the first side to book a berth in the playoffs. The side won the last game by 7 wickets under the DLS method against the Kandy Warriors in yet another good show by their batsmen. They had defeated the Dambulla Giants earlier and shall aim to repeat the same magic in this game.  

Upul Tharanga and Avishka Fernando would aim for a good start as both of them failed to convert their starts in the previous game. In the middle order, the side has good experience with Tom Kohler-Cadmore and Shoaib Malik in the squad. Perera has scored runs down the order and he would look to add quick runs in the company of Ashen Bandara, Chaturanga de Silva, and Wanindu Hasaranga.

Maheesh Theekshana has bowled tight spells and this would add to the side’s confidence. He would aim to strike early sharing the new ball with Suranga Lakmal. Wahab Riaz hasn’t found his form and the side would like to see him bring his experience to play. In Malik, Hasaranga, and Chaturanga de Silva they have a strong spin attack and would like to see them make good use of the conditions in this game.

There would be thick clouds over Colombo on December 13 and we might also see rains during the game. Batting conditions are expected to be challenging as the ball would move in the air. We have so far seen a flat surface in most games and the side batting first would need at least 160 runs on the board.   

Venue Details

R. Premadasa Stadium, Colombo is a batsman’s paradise with a flat surface and fast outfield. Fast bowlers haven’t done well here in the past as there isn’t any assistance for them from the surface. Spinners enjoy the conditions on this ground as there is sharp turn on offer for them.

The weather conditions aren’t expected to be great, and we might see a rain-curtailed game here. In such conditions, the side chasing the score would have an upper hand. Hence, we expect to see the side winning the toss here having no doubts about bowling first in the game.
