The Kandy Warriors find themselves in a spot of bother as they take on the Galle Gladiators in the 10th game of the Lanka Premier League 2021. The side comes into this contest with a loss against the Jaffna Kings in a rain-reduced game. The Galle Gladiators saw their last game against the Dambulla Giants being washed away by rain.  

The Kandy Warriors are yet to get going in the tournament. They have lost the three games they have played and must win this one to keep their hopes alive for the rest of the tournament. They had lost to the Gladiators in the previous game between the two sides. It remains to be seen if the Warriors can turn it around with a win in this game.

It was a rain washout for Bhanuka Rajapaksa’s side in their last game against the Dambulla Giants. Their bowling was slightly off the mark in that game and the side shall look to make amends here. They had defeated the Kandy Warriors earlier and Rajapaksa would like his side to take inspiration from that game and move up to the top spot with a win in this game. 

The side would like to see a positive start in this game from Danushka Gunathilaka and Kusal Mendis who have done well. The middle-order has the experienced trio of Mohammad Hafeez, Ben Dunk, and Rajapaksa and they would be expected to build good partnerships here. The side would also look for runs from Samit Patel,  Lahiru Maudshanka, and Dhananjaya Lakshan who can hit the ball hard and score quick runs. 

Samit Patel has been consistent with the ball, but the rest of the bowlers have been all over the place. Nuwan Thushara and Lahiru Madushanka would look to exploit the weaknesses in the Warriors’ batting and bowl good spells with the new ball. Mohammad Hafeez did well in the last game, and he would look to keep things under control in the middle overs with Dhananjaya Lakshan and Noor Ahmad.

Angelo Perera’s side would be under pressure coming into this game. They have lost three games and went down against the Jaffna Kings by 14 runs under the DLS method in a rain-affected game. They bowled poorly and this is one area the side would have to improve going into this game. They must win here to keep their hopes alive for the rest of the season. 

Kennar Lewis and Charith Asalanka scored runs in the last game and this would add to the side’s belief in this important game. Rovman Powell would be confident after his heroics in the last game and shall need to add runs in the company of Kamindu Mendis and Angelo Perera. Minod Bhanuka and Ravi Bopara must come up with contributions down the order to compensate for the side’s poor bowling form. 

It was a disastrous performance from the side with the ball in the last game. Nimesh Vimukthi and Shiraz Ahmed bowled well but the rest of the attack failed to execute its plans. Bopara brings in his experience and he would have to bowl well in the middle overs with Al-Amin Hossain. Powell and Mendis bowled wrong lines and the side would expect to see better spells from them.

The skies over Colombo would be partly cloudy on December 11. The track has been flat, and batsmen have scored runs easily. Bowlers must make use of their variations as there is not much room for error for them.  Batting first a side would need to have 180 runs on the board to feel comfortable.

Venue Details

R. Premadasa Stadium, Colombo is a batting-friendly ground. The wicket is flat, and batsmen can score runs easily thanks to the fast outfield. Fast bowlers haven’t enjoyed much success at this venue in the past. The wicket does offer good turn and bounce to the spinners who have enjoyed better records.

The wickets have gotten flatter as the tournament has progressed and we have seen sides win the last three games batting first. It is an afternoon game and batting conditions would be great at the start. The side winning the toss in this game would look to take advantage of it batting first.
