The last round of the county championships will take place later this week. Surrey are currently at the top of the division one table while Durham are at the top of the division two table. From division two, Glamorgan and Derbyshire will be clashing at Sophia Gardens on September 26. Currently, Glamorgan are in 4th place with 131 points and Derbyshire are in 6th place with 104 points. This is a chance for both teams to end their season on a positive note.
Glamorgan are coming off a drawn match against Yorkshire. In fact, 11 out if their 13 matches this season have ended in draws! They have won one and lost one. So it hasn’t exactly been a bad season for them.
Captain Kiran Carlson has led from the front and been the standout batter for Glamorgan this year. The middle-order batter has amassed 1028 runs in 21 innings at an average of 48.95 with four hundreds and five fifties.
Billy Root has had an outstanding season as well, scoring 817 runs in 21 innings at an average of 54.46. He has smashed one hundred and five fifties.
Sam Northeast, who is fresh from a brilliant unbeaten 166 in the previous match against Yorkshire, has also been among regular runs. That hundred has taken his season’s tally to 667 runs in 19 innings at an average of 34.
Among the bowlers, you must keep an eye out for James Harris. The right-arm fast bowler has grabbed 29 wickets in 15 innings at an average of 36.68. Left-arm medium pacer Jamie McIlroy (23 wickets in 15 innings at 27.39) is another one worth backing.

Derbyshire’s last match too ended in a draw. Unfortunately, that was a match they should have won, but rain had other plans. They had bowled Sussex out for just 100 after bowling first at Derby. Then, Derbyshire took a 129 run lead in their first innings and had Sussex at 84-3 in their reply. Sadly, rain interrupted the proceedings and no further play was possible.
Captain Leus du Plooy has made the difference in Derbyshire’s this year, collecting a mammoth 1176 runs in just 19 innings at an average of 84 with four hundreds and four fifties.
Then they also have Luis Reece (790 runs in 17 innings at 71.81) and Wayne Madsen (779 runs in 17 innings at 45.82) who have been consistent for them.
Derbyshire’s bowling has been pretty decent as well. Samuel Conners, who has taken 26 wickets this season, doesn’t have a great average but bowled excellently in the previous match against Sussex where he ended up with a match haul of five wickets.
Zak Chappell (21 wickets in 13 innings) too has started to find his rhythm a little late into the season.

The pitch at Sophia Gardens is typically a balanced one, offering assistance to both seamers and batters. It tends to provide assistance to fast bowlers, with movement off the seam and in the air, especially under overcast conditions. Batters will find it challenging to settle in during the initial overs as they could be troubled by the seam movement. However, as the ball becomes softer, batting becomes more manageable.
The weather will be cloudy and winy for the first two days of the match. Some showers are expected on the third day.
Sophia Gardens has proven to be a batting-friendly venue this season in the county championship. Totals above 400 have been scored seven times here this season. The team batting first should look to set a total of around 350 runs at least.
The weather in Cardiff on the first day of the game is expected to be cloudy. The team winning the toss is hence likely to field first to utilize the overhead conditions and get some early wickets.
Glamorgan and Derbyshire have both got a pretty balanced squad. However, it has been a long season and it remains to be seen whether the players are able to maintain their intensity. On paper, Glamorgan looks a little stronger but not by that much. Derbyshire have a good set of players but they have failed to clinch the big moments. We reckon that might make the difference in this game’s outcome too.
Back Glamorgan as the winners of this game.
