Tournament: VITALITY T20 BLAST 2020 | Format: T20 | Venue: Sophia Gardens, Cardiff, England | Toss: To Bowl
Bet NowGlamorgan would take on the Worcestershire Rapids in the second game of the Central Group in the T20 Blast 2020. It will be a big task for Glamorgan after the disastrous campaign they had last season where they finished at the bottom of the points table. The Rapids on the other hand had done well last season to finish runner-up and look to start this one with a win.
Glamorgan’s problems are compounded by the fact that the side will miss the services of several key players due to travel restrictions including regular skipper Colin Ingram. Their bowling attack looks inexperienced at the moment. The Rapids on the other have had a strong group of players adding to their advantage. It will be interesting to see if Glamorgan is able to throw in a surprise in this game.
They had a pathetic season last year finishing at the bottom of the points table in the South Group with just one win in their 14 games. Skipper Chris Cooke will hope to erase those memories starting with a win in this game. This will be missing out on some of their International stars due to the restrictions but Cooke will look to get best out of his resources.
This will miss opener David Lloyd who is out with an injury and expect a good start from Nicholas Selman and Charlie Hemphrey in this game. There is bit of inexperience in the batting this time. Billy Root and Kiran Carlson will have to play good knocks in the middle for the side. In Dan Douthwaite, Andrew Salter and Chris Cooke they have good finishers down the order.
In the bowling department Marchant de Lange will have to take the lead and grab early wickets in company of Timm van der Gugten. Roman Walker and Michael Hogan will need to bowl tight lines and not allow their opponents to put up a big score on the board. Douthwaite and Andrew Salter also bring in good variations and the side will expect good show from them.
Chris Cooke (c & wk), Nicholas Selman, Charlie Hemphrey, Billy Root, Kiran Carlson, Dan Douthwaite, Andrew Salter, Timm van der Gugten, Roman Walker, Michael Hogan, Prem Sisodiya
Moeen Ali their regular skipper won’t be available for this game as he is with the national side and in his absence Brett D'Oliveira will be leading the side. The skipper would know the importance of a good start in the season. His side has good balance of batsmen and bowlers and he would want them to play to their potential in this game.
The side will need a good start at the top from Riki Wessels and Hamish Rutherford. Both these players had done well last season. In the middle order the side has good strength in Ben Cox, Olly Westbury and Jake Libby. Wayne Parnell and Ed Barnard down the order have good hitting abilities and they will look to do the big hitting towards the end.
Wayne Parnell and Charlie Morris will be attacking with the new ball and target the fragile top order that Glamorgan has at the moment. Patrick Brown had done well last season and along with Dillon Pennington will be looking to contain the flow of runs during the middle overs. Ed Barnard needs to play the role of a fifth bowler well in this game.
Brett D'Oliveira (c), Ben Cox (wk), Olly Westbury, Riki Wessels, Hamish Rutherford, Wayne Parnell, Ed Barnard, Joe Leach, Charlie Morris, Patrick Brown, Dillon Pennington
The skies over Cardiff would be cloudy on August 27 with chances of showers during this game. It will be a tricky wicket to bat on as the ball is expected to move around a bit in the early overs. Batsmen will have to be watchful while playing their strokes. Anything over 150 runs is expected to be a good score on this surface.
Sophia Gardens, Cardiff is one of the biggest grounds in England and hence batsmen have to watchful while playing the ball in the air. But there are plenty of twos and threes on offer here. Fast bowlers get good assistance from the surface here. Spinners have done well as it isn’t easy to score boundaries of their bowling.
It will be a fresh wicket where there would be some assistance for the fast bowlers and batting conditions would be challenging. In most T20 games we are seeing sides preferring to bowl first. The captain winning the toss isn’t likely to have much hesitation in bowling first in this game.
Glamorgan will have a big challenge on their hands coming into this season with bad memories from last year. The loss of their star players is another blow they will need to overcome in this game. Worcestershire Rapids on the other hand have more or less retained the team from last year and these guys have gelled well together. They are strong both in the batting as well as bowling departments and this will make them favorites to win this game.
