Gloucestershire would play Somerset in the last league game of the Central Group in T20 Blast 2020 at the County Ground, Bristol. Gloucestershire come into this game after a surprising loss against Glamorgan but they are sitting at the top of the points table and have already qualified for the quarterfinals. Somerset who defeated Northamptonshire Steelbacks in the last game has to win this one to book a spot in the next round.

Gloucestershire has had a good season and prior to the loss in their last game the side had won six games in a row. They had defeated Somerset earlier and would carry that confidence into this game. As for Somerset, they have looked in good form in the last two games and shall be looking to put their best show here and earn an entry into the quarterfinals.

Gloucestershire Preview

It was a rare defeat for Jack Taylor’s side in the last game against Glamorgan after six consecutive wins. The side has already earned its entry into the quarterfinal and all that Taylor would focus on is getting into the knockouts with momentum on their side. They had won the previous game against Somerset and this will serve as a confidence booster for the team in this game.

Their batsmen looked in good form in the previous defeat and this will give the side lot of confidence ahead of this game. They will expect a good start from Miles Hammond and Chris Dent who are in good form. Ian Cockbain has had a great season and makes the middle order very strong with James Bracey and Ryan Higgins. Taylor and Benny Howell with their hitting abilities add strength to this line-up.

Graeme van Buuren has been in good form with the ball but he will need David Payne to support him with the new ball. Matt Taylor, Tom Smith and Higgins went for runs in the last game but they have enjoyed a good season and would be looking to bounce back and gain their form before the quarterfinal.

Gloucestershire Predicted Playing XI:

Jack Taylor (c), Miles Hammond, Chris Dent, Ian Cockbain, Ryan Higgins, James Bracey (wk), Benny Howell, Graeme van Buuren, Tom Smith, David Payne, Matt Taylor

Gloucestershire Actual Playing XI:

Chris Dent, Benny Howell, David Payne, GLV Buuren, Jack Taylor, Josh Shaw, Miles Hammond, Ryan Higgins, Tom Smith, Ian Cockbain, James Bracey

Somerset Preview

It is a must win game for Lewis Gregory’s side. They are placed third on the points table and need to win this one to open up their chances for the next round. The side comes here with a massive 7-wicket win against Northamptonshire Steelbacks. Gregory would be aware of the challenge they have in hand given the kind of form Gloucestershire have been in and the skipper would be looking for a good show from his players in this game.

Their batting looks good going into this game as openers Babar Azam and Steven Davies have scored runs in the last two games. Will Smeed has also been in good form. Top Abell and Tom Lammonboy put up a match winning stand in the last game and this will add to their confidence. The side bats deep with Lewis Goldsworthy, Gregory, Craig Overton and Roelof van der Merwe having good hitting abilities.

Max Waller has been on the top of his game this season with the new ball and shall be looking to provide a good start alongside Overton. Roelof van der Merwe, Ollie Sale and Gregory have also picked up wickets in the last couple of games giving few runs and make this bowling attack very strong ahead of the contest.

Somerset Predicted Playing XI:

Lewis Gregory (c), Steven Davies (wk), Babar Azam, Will Smeed, Tom Abell, Lewis Goldsworthy, Tom Lammonby, Craig Overton, Roelof van der Merwe, Ollie Sale, Max Waller

Weather Conditions

There would be odd clouds over Bristol on September 20 but it will be good conditions for the batsmen. The track has produced lots of runs in the last few games and we expect similar conditions in the next contest. The side that bats first would have to target a score of 170 runs at this venue.

Venue Details

The Bristol County Ground is among the best T20 venues in the UK where batsmen have scored lots of runs. Fast bowlers enjoy the pace and bounce on this surface. Spinners have always found this to be a tough surface to bowl at the small size of the ground allows them little rooms for error.

Toss: To Bat

The last three games at this venue have gone in favor of sides that have batted first and big scores have been made and chased here. The track has been a good one to bat on and thus we expect the side winning the toss to bat first here and aim at putting up a big score on the board.

This is going to be a very close game given the kind of form we have seen from the two sides in the last few games. Somerset comes here with back to back wins and they are looking in the right frame of mind at the moment. As for Gloucestershire they have dominated the league stage so far in the group and shall look to erase memories of the loss in the last game. They play at home in conditions that are known well to them and this will put them slightly ahead of Somerset in this game.
