The weather has finally improved in Sydney and we are getting to see complete matches in the ongoing season of the Women’s Big Bash League 2020. The next awaited clash is between the Hobart Hurricanes Women and Sydney Thunder Women. Both teams have had contrasting fortunes in the tournament so far. While Sydney Thunder Women are 3rd in the points table with 3 wins and one loss, Hobart Hurricanes are faring rather poorly again and are 6th in the table with one victory and 3 losses. On current form, Sydney Thunder should dominate this contest but Hobart has shown that on their day, they can put up a solid performance.

Hobart Hurricanes Women Preview

Hobart Hurricanes Women have been below par in the WBBL in recent years, finishing 8th, 8th, and 7th in the last three years. They were hoping for a better show this time, but things don’t appear to be looking too good for them. Apart from that win against bottom-placed Melbourne Renegades Women, they have been brushed aside by all the other sides so far. They are coming off two back-to-back losses and would really need to pick up their socks before the season comes crashing down on them. In their last match, Hobart did put up a spirited show against table-toppers Sydney Sixers Women but lost the game by just 9 runs.

The problem with Hobart is that their batting unit hasn’t come together as a whole. Openers Naomi Stalenberg and Rachel Priest have got starts but have failed to go on to get big scores. Hayley Matthews and Nicola Carey have been good and one feels that they will have a big role to play in this match.

Hayley has also been good with the ball and is fresh from a spell of 3-15 in the last match. However, the likes of Belinda Vakarewa and Brooke Hepburn had an off day. They would need to be better and Nicola Carey might be needed again if the main bowlers leak runs.

Hobart Hurricanes Women Predicted Playing XI:

Rachel Priest (wk), Naomi Stalenberg, Hayley Matthews, Nicola Carey, Chloe Tryon, Corinne Hall (c), Sasha Moloney, Erica Kershaw, Amy Smith, Brooke Hepburn, Belinda Vakarewa

Hobart Hurricanes Women Actual Playing XI:

Lauren Smith, Phoebe Litchfield, Shabnim Ismail, Sam Bates, Hannah Darlington, Rachel Trenaman, Sammy Jo Johnson, Tammy Beaumont, Heather Knight, Tahlia Wilson, Rachael Haynes

Sydney Thunder Women Preview

Sydney Thunder Women have had a solid season so far. Barring a shocking loss against Melbourne Renegades Women in their last game, they have won three matches comfortably. The previous loss would hurt them because it came against the bottom-placed side and upset their chances of retaining the number one position in the points table. Chasing a small target of 111, Sydney’s top-order collapsed and they finished on 108-7.

Despite that loss, however, this team is easily one of the best all-round sides in the tournament right now. Their batting unit has players like Tammy Beaumont, Sammy-Jo Johnson, Heather Knight, and skipper Rachael Haynes. They have shown in the previous games, that they can take apart any bowling unit and Hobart’s bowling is unlikely to push them.

On the bowling front, too, Sydney has plenty of options. Sammy-Jo Johnson rocked the Renegades in the previous game with a terrific spell of 4-26. Shabnim Ismail, Lauren Smith, and Samantha Bates have all been among the wickets and are in a good rhythm. This bowling unit is more than capable of suffocating Hobart’s batting.

Sydney Thunder Women Predicted Playing XI:

Rachel Trenaman, Tammy Beaumont, Heather Knight, Rachael Haynes (c), Phoebe Litchfield, Sammy-Jo Johnson, Tahlia Wilson (wk), Hannah Darlington, Lauren Smith, Shabnim Ismail, Samantha Bates

Weather Conditions

The pitch at the Hurstville Oval in Sydney is expected to be slow and low. Batting isn’t going to be easy and the ball won’t come on the bat after it loses its shine. Seam bowlers and slower bowlers should have a great time here and expect them to dominate the batters.

The weather forecast for the match looks good. The skies will be partly cloudy but there is no rain on the radar and we should have a full game.

Venue Details

As we saw in the last game at the Hurstville Oval in Sydney between Melbourne Renegades Women and Sydney Thunder Women, the pitch here isn’t the best for batting. Another low-scoring match is on the cards and a total of 130-odd by the team batting first could well be a match-winning one.

Toss: To Bowl

The team winning the toss is likely to bat first. Since the weather has improved, chasing hasn’t been ideal for teams and hence batting first and choking the opposition later should be the way to go.

In the last 5 encounters between Hobart Hurricanes Women and Sydney Thunder Women, Hobart has won just one match. On current form, Sydney Thunder is way ahead of Hobart and are favorites for this clash. Hobart will have to hope that their top-order comes good and then their bowling can do the job. However, despite that blip in the last game, Sydney Thunder is too strong and should come back with a bang. Expect their batters to produce a much better show and their bowlers to rule.

We are backing Sydney Thunder Women as the winners of this match.
