After a six-wicket win in the second T20I played at Nagpur, India is set to play the series decider against Australia at Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium, Hyderabad. The third T20I is scheduled to play on 25th September from 7:00 pm. India have never lost the third game of any T20I series played against Australia. 

The second T20I at Nagpur was reduced to 8 overs each after wet patches in the outfield delayed the start. Batting first, Australia put 90 runs on the board after Matthew Wade ensured a strong finish. A calculated start from Indian openers followed by a classy finish by specialist Dinesh Karthik saw India taking the game with 6 wickets and 4 balls in the hand.

Australia’s fifth loss in six international games played at Nagpur means the third game at Hyderabad will be a final. Australia is yet to lose a T20I series on Indian soil since 2007. India matched the record of Pakistan by winning 22 T20I in one calendar year. They haven’t lost the last 10 T20I series played at home.

Indian skipper Rohit Sharma is enjoying the role of starting the innings with fireworks. Sharma has scored 178 runs in his last 5 innings at a strike rate of 179.79. In the second game, he scored 46 runs in just 20 deliveries with help of 4 fours and as many sixes. His partner KL Rahul has 2 fifties in the last three games. Rahul had a half-century in the final game played at Hyderabad. Virat Kohli is yet to show his aggressive side in this series. India’s leading run-scorer in the Asia Cup had scored 94 off just 50 balls with 6 fours and 6 sixes in the last game played at Hyderabad. Suryakumar Yadav got out on the very first ball in the second game. But his 46 off 25 balls in the first game shows India has the deadliest top-order combination.

India played 8 batters after the game was reduced to 8 overs. This might change at Hyderabad with a 20-over game expected. Hardik Pandya scored 71 in the first game in 30 deliveries. Though he is contributing great with the bat, his effectiveness with the ball has gone a little down in the last few games. This means India will play an extra bowler in the final game. There is a big tussle over choosing between Karthik and Pant. But Karthik’s 10 runs off 2 balls to finish the game shows India’s strategy of playing him as a specialist finisher over Pant.

Jaspreet Bumrah’s comeback bolstered the Indian pace attack in the second game. Bumrah took the wicket off Aaron Finch with a classy yorker showing that he hasn’t lost his touch. Harshal Patel’s form has put India in a jeopardy. Patel has taken just 5 wickets in the last 7 games at an economy of 10.85. In the last two games, he has been wicketless.  Bhuvneshwar Kumar will be back for the final game. Bhuvi has 31 wickets in 23 games played this year. But his inability to bowl in the final overs might see India go with Bumrah for the 19th over.

Axar Patel has been phenomenal in this series. Patel has 5 wickets in the 2 games at an average of 6 and an economy of 5.

Australia Preview

It wasn’t a bad game for Australia. Scoring 90 runs in 8 overs was a big plus for them. Aaron Finch and Cameroon Green will open once again. Finch has 53 runs in this series at a strike rate of 189.29. Green was unlucky with the runout, but his 61 runs in the first innings at a strike rate of more than 200 should be enough for Australia to get a fiery start. Glenn Maxwell has been abysmal in this series. A run in the first game followed by a duck in the second exposed that the leading run-scorer of Australia’s last T20I series in India is struggling to play. 

Tim David failed to prove himself once again. He scored just two runs. His inclusion in the World Cup squad is now facing a lot of questions. India doesn’t have a solution for Matthew Wade. Wade scored 43 off 20 balls in the second T20I. He is the leading run-scorer of the series with 88 runs at a strike rate of 214.63 and has yet to get out. Josh Inglis will be back in the squad replacing Daniel Sams. 

Adam Zampa mesmerized with his bowling once again. The leg spinner took 3 wickets for 16 runs in his 2 overs. His wickets included Rahul, Kohli, and Yadav. Josh Hazelwood, Pat Cummins, and Nathan Ellis will lead the pace attack. Inglis has 7 wickets in two T20s played this year for Australia.
