Tournament: India vs England 2021 | Format: TEST | Venue: Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad, India | Toss: To Bat
Bet NowThe high-octane India-England Test series heads towards its conclusion as both teams gear up to face off one final time. India leads the 4-match series 2-1 and will start as clear favourites for the last match after winning the last two Tests comfortably. Despite the controversies surrounding the pitch, they have been the superior side and have outplayed England. The visitors had shown promise in the first Test, which they won, but haven’t been able to face the challenge of playing on rank turners. It will be difficult for them to make a comeback with the kind of confidence the home side has right now.
India has won the last 2 Tests on the back of some incredible bowling performances. Their spinners, in particular, have been outstanding. Ravichandran Ashwin now has 24 wickets in the 3 Tests and newbie Axar Patel has shown remarkable support by plucking 18 wickets in just 2 Tests. Both the spinners are expected to play a major role in the final Test too. Ishant Sharma will be the main seam bowler and is likely to be accompanied by Umesh Yadav as Jasprit Bumrah will be missing the final Test.
India’s batting hasn’t been too consistent this series. Barring opener Rohit Sharma, who has 286 runs with 1 hundred, the others have been below par. The likes of captain Virat Kohli (172 runs), Rishabh Pant (169 runs), Shubman Gill (119 runs), Cheteshwar Pujara (116 runs), and Ajinkya Rahane (85 runs) need to show a little more application on these pitches. However, if the pitch for the last Test is again a rank turner, then they are likely to struggle again. India’s spinners should be dictating the fate of this final match.

England’s batsmen somehow have to find an answer to survive on turning tracks if they hope to seal the series. Apart from skipper Joe Root (333 runs), no other batsman has been able to make much of an impression. Given that the chances of the pitch being another rank turner for the last Test, the English batsmen have a task on their hands. Ben Stokes has looked out of sorts in the last 2 Tests but has the talent to play a match-winning inning. Dom Sibley too has shown traces of promise and could make a solid contribution to the game.
As for the bowlers, England’s bowling attack has almost been led by spinner Jack Leach who has 16 wickets in 3 matches here now. The seamers haven’t been as effective as the team would have wanted but James Anderson, Stuart Broad, and Jofra Archer would be hoping to get their act together one last time. England might be tempted to play another spinner but Joe Root has more made up for that part with his sensational performance in the last Test where he picked up 5-8.

The pitch at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad will again be in much focus. All the talk in the last 2 Tests has been about the surface and it will be interesting to see if the curators prepare another rank turner. Expect the pitch to spin and bounce at some point. However, if the surface is a little hard, then batsmen might have a better time than they have had so far. Spinners will be dominating this pitch in all likelihood.
The weather at Ahmedabad for 5 days of the Test is expected to be hot and hazy with plenty of sunshine.
The previous match between India and England was the first one at the new-look Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. While the venue was earlier known as Motera Stadium, the pitch has been completely redeveloped. Hopefully, we will get to see a full 5-day game in this huge stadium as the last one here just wrapped up in under 2 days.
The team winning the toss is likely to have a bat first. Putting on a solid total in the 1st innings is the best chance for winning on these pitches.
India will begin as clear favourites for this match. They are the home side and have tasted blood. Their spinners are in outstanding form and they have enough variety in their batting to negate England. They will look to go for the kill as ending the series 3-1 will assure them of a place in the finals of the World Test Championship. England, meanwhile, will be looking to end the series on a high. They had shown promise in the first Test and if the pitch is a little easier to bat on, they will be in the game. Despite that, however, expect India to dominate this Test too.
