Tournament: India vs England 2021 | Format: ODI | Venue: Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium , Pune, India | Toss: To Bowl
Bet NowEngland’s tour to India is now at its fag end and will wrap up with a three-match ODI series. After losing both the Test and T20I series, the current ODI world champions would be hoping for a better show in the 50-over format. It won’t be easy as India are in great form and are playing at home. Moreover, the England squad is also missing some key players. They would have hence have to produce something special to upstage India in this ODI series.
Team India would be flying high in confidence after winning the T20I series against England in grand style. They have a couple of fresh additions to the ODI squad – namely seam bowler M Prasidh Krishna, all-rounder Krunal Pandya, leg spinner Kuldeep Yadav, and opening batsman Shubhman Gill – but the core setup remains the same from the T20I series. Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul are likely to open the batting and will be followed by the in-form skipper Virat Kohli. along with Suryakumar Yadav, Rishabh Pant, Hardik Pandya, and Krunal Pandya. This is a strong batting unit and will pose a real challenge to the English bowlers.
India’s bowling will be led by Bhuvneshwar Kumar who was mighty impressive in the ODIs. Shardul Thakur and T Natarajan will provide him able support while Yuzvendra Chahal will be looking to get back into form after a poor show in the T20Is. Krunal Pandya is likely to be given a chance and his off-spin will be handy in the middle overs.

England’s ODI squad has been already served a blow as Jofra Archer has been ruled out due to an elbow injury. Furthermore, Joe Root and Chris Woakes have also been given a break. These exclusions will hurt the visitors but they still have plenty of power in the squad.
Jason Roy and Dawid Malan could be the opening duo for the first game, given that both of them have already played well in the T20I series here. Although Jos Buttler is likely to be tried as an opener as the destructive batsman is in great form at the moment. Then they have the likes of Jonny Bairstow, Eoin Morgan, and Ben Stokes, providing great stability to the batting unit. Liam Livingstone who is among the most destructive batsmen in England currently is likely to be drafted into the middle-order as well and should play his maiden ODI.
England’s bowling is a little brittle and will depend on Mark Wood who was exceptional in the T20Is with his raw pace and leg-spinner Adil Rashid. Moeen Ali could also play a crucial role as his spin has troubled India in the past.

The pitch at the Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium, Pune, is known to be a good one for batting. Batsmen have enjoyed their time here as the ball comes on nicely to the bat. Seamers will find it hard initially but spinners will have a big role to play as the track softens up a little.
The weather at Pune on the day of the game will be clear and warm.
There haven’t been many games played at the Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium but we have seen some tall scores being achieved. In the 2017 ODI match between India and England here, the visitors posted 350-7 and India chased it down with almost two overs to spare. Expect another high-scoring encounter in this game and the team batting first will have to target a total of around 280-300 at least to have a chance.
The team winning the toss will look to bat second as chasing in these conditions is likely to yield better chances of winning.
In the last 5 ODIs between these two sides, England has won 4 matches while India has just clinched one. The last time India beat England in an ODI was back in July 2018 which shows just how dominant England has been in the format. However, India has looked in great shape recently and will certainly have the home advantage with them. They have a settled unit and have most bases covered. England’s main strength right now is their batting which looks quite formidable. If that clicks, they would be hard to stop. However, their bowling unit looks inexperienced and that is where India might take the game away from them.
Team India are likely to emerge as the winners of the first ODI.
