After another successful season of the Indian Premier League, India will now host South Africa for the 5-match T20I series. The first T20I between these two will be played at the Arun Jaitley Stadium, Delhi on 9th June from 7:00 pm. The T20I series will be ideal for the preparation of the T20 World Cup scheduled to be played in Australia in October-November.
It will be a payback series for the Indian side after coming empty-handed from the South Africa tour at the start of the year. India lost the Test series 2-1 and the ODI series by 3-0. So their losing streak against South Africa is now 5 games in a row in two different formats. Though India will be missing their key players, they have an impressive record at home. India has not lost a T20I series at home since 2018. It's been 14 months since they have lost a T20I game at home. It was England who beat them by 8 wickets. Since then they have whitewashed New Zealand, West Indies, and Sri Lanka.
It will be a tough task for Temba Bavuma’s side to beat India in India. South Africa has a good record in T20Is. They have won and drawn tier only two bilateral series in India. Besides this, they have lost just twice in their last 15 T20I matches. It is a good sign for South Africa that three of their players - Quinton de Kock, Kagiso Rabada, and David Miller have collectively played 260 IPL matches and are in a tremendous form.
India has decided to rest skipper Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Jasprit Bumrah for the bilateral series. Besides this, they will miss Suryakumar Yadav and Ravindra Jadeja due to injuries. KL Rahul is set to take the charge once again. Rahul was the second leading run-scorer of this IPL with 616 runs at a strike rate of 135.38 - His fourth consecutive 600+ runs finish. He will be open with either Ruturaj Gaikwad or Ishan Kishan. Last IPL’s orange cap Holder Gaikwad has a decent season this year as he finished with 368 runs striking at 126.46. On the other hand, Kishan was inconsistent throughout the IPL. He scored 418 with a strike rate of just 120.11.
The number three position has two contenders for India. Deepak Hooda and Shreyas Iyer. Hooda had 451 runs for LSG at 136.67 but he might get overlooked over Shreyas Iyer. Iyer is set to play all 5 T20Is and then join the Test squad in England.. With the first four places sorted India will have to choose between Hardik Pandya and Dinesh Karthik to play the finisher’s position. Pandya guided his newly added IPL franchise to win their maiden IPL title. The man of the match of the finals was the fourth-highest run-scorer with 487 runs at 131.27. Pandya also took 8 wickets with the ball including 3 in the final. Karthik’s comeback was noticed more than anyone else as the RCB finisher scored 330 runs at a strike rate of 183.33. Rishabh Pant has been given the role of Rahul’s deputy. His form will be scrutinized along with Karthik and Kishan before going to the T20 World Cup.
IPL’s Purple Cap holder will be leading the spin attack with Kuldeep Yadav. The ‘Kulcha’s took 48 wickets in this IPL. IThe Indian pace attack will be on the shoulders of Bhavneshwar Kumar, Harshal Patel, and Avesh Khan. Both Patel and Khan continued their form from the last season’s IPL to take 19 and 18 wickets respectively. IPL’s emerging player of the season Umran Malik and death over specialist Arshdeep Singh have earned their maiden calls. Malik who bowled constantly above 150 took 22 wickets in his first IPL season as a regular. Who won’t like him breaking his 157 kmh record in this series?

Bavuma’s South Africa will be banking on the success of Quinton de Kock, David Miller, and Kagiso Rabada in the IPL. Quinton scored 508 runs in 15 games at a strike rate of 148.97. He has a good track record against India in T20Is. He will open with Reeza Hendricks. Rassie Van der Dussen will take the number three position. The right-handed batter has 933 runs in 34 games so far. South Africa might drop Hendricks and let Aiden Markram open for the first few games.
Bavuma has told in the recent press conference that David Miller will be utilized in the middle-order and will get a chance to bat early. The IPL winner had a season of a lifetime scoring 481 runs at 142.73. His record against India is pretty poor. So far Miller has just 99 runs in 9 games against India. With so much firepower depth in the batting lineup, Bavuma will be coming at sixth.
Rabada, Nortje, and Dwaine Pretorious will lead the pace attack for South Africa. Rabada finished third in the leading wicket taker’s table with 23 wickets at an average of 17.65. Nortje will make a comeback after missing more than 8 months due to an injury. Keshav Maharaj and Tabraiz Shamsi will be spinning the web against India. It's more likely that South Africa will play both on the spin-friendly pitches in India.

The T20 is expected to play under extreme heat. The temperature will range between 31 and 43°C. Widespread areas of smoke and haze are expected. The wind will be flowing from the northeast at 13-19 kmh. The pitch is batting-friendly. It also helps bowlers to swing in either way during the initial stages of the game.
The 1st T20I between India and South Africa will be played at Arun Jaitley Stadium, Delhi The venue holds a capacity of 48000 spectators and has hosted 34 tests, 25 ODIs & 6 T20Is so far. The stadium is known for Anil Kumble’s 10 for 74 against Pakistan. The venue is the home ground for IPL franchise Delhi Capitals.
In 6 T20Is, the results have been equally split between teams batting first and second. In the last four games, the team chasing the target has registered a victory thrice. Hence team winning the toss should field first.
With the current form of both teams, it will be a nail-biting battle. India is on an unbeaten streak in its last 14 T20Is. They have won their last three T20I series at home. But they haven’t yet won a T20I series against South Africa at home. South Africa has won 13 of their last 15 T20Is. But it’s home conditions and the Indian squad is full of IPL stars. Hence India has an advantage over South Africa in the 1st T20I.
We predict that India will defeat South Africa.
