The second T20I between India and South Africa is scheduled to take place at the Barabati Stadium, Cuttack on 12th June from 7:00 pm. South Africa stopped India’s 12-match unbeaten streak - the longest for any team in men’s T20Is by beating them at Arun Jaitley Stadium. South Africa successfully chased the target of 212 with the loss of three wickets. This was their highest chase in the T20I format. Their previous record was against West Indies in the inaugural World T20 game, where they chased 206.
Batting first, India set a target of 212. Opener Ishan Kishan scored 76 off 48 balls with 11 fours and 3 sixes. South Africa started the chase with a furious display of batting from Dwayne Pretorious who scored 29 off just 13 balls. After Quinton de Kock fell in the 9th over, Miller and Dussen kept their heads high to chase the target in 19.1 overs. This was India’s first loss after posting a 200-plus score. They had won while defending a 200-plus target on all 11 previous instances. Surprisingly, the previous highest successful chase against India was also registered by South Africa where they chased exact 200 runs.
The series is now poised at 1-0 in South Africa’s favor. SA haven’t lost a bilateral T20I series in India so far. With all key players missing from the Indian squad, it will be easier for them to keep their T20I record in India. Besides that, missing KL Rahul and Kuldeep Yadav due to an injury in the practice session added to India’s misery.
Rishabh Pant will be having a difficult task leading the underperforming bowling unit in the remaining T20Is. Thankfully, Ishan Kishan is back in the form for India. Kishan scored 76 off 48 and put a 50-plus partnership with Ruturaj Gaikwad. Though Shreyas Iyer played a knock of 36, he slowed down the innings. India will be expecting him to score more freely in the second T20I.
Indian middle-order looks very stable with Pant, Pandya, and Dinesh Karthik. Pant and Pandya added 46 runs in just 3 overs at the end to take the score par 200. Pandya, who made a comeback after a long gap hit 32 off 12 balls with 2 fours and 3 sixes. On the other hand, Pant also scored at a strike rate of 181.25. Dinesh Karthik’s presence at the bottom can prove crucial in the series if India’s top order fails. India also has Axar Patel in the 7th position who can also bat if the situation gets risky.
Bowling wise it was a poor performance from India. The management will need more from Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Yuzvendra Chahal to stop the flow of the runs from SA. Every Indian bowler went for more than 10 runs in an over except Avesh Khan. Death over specialist Harshal Patel bowled a very good 19th over by conceding just 8. But it was the overs management from Pant that created a problem for India in the end. Chahal and Axar can prove vital at Cuttack as the pitch favors spinners. Chahal took 4 wickets for 23 in his last outing at this stadium. There is one more thing India needs to work on. Fielding. Shreyas Iyer dropped Van der Dussen on 14 in the 16th over. Dussen managed to score 46 off 16 after this drop.
Key Players: Ishan Kishan, Hardik Pandya, Harshal Patel.

With Aiden Markram’s availability still in question, SA will go unchanged for the second match. Quinton de Kock and Temba Bavuma will open the innings. Bavuma doesn’t look like the ideal choice to open, but adding Reeza Hendricks to the squad can create problems in the bowling department. Both de Kock and Bavuma failed to score in the first match. But de Kock’s record against India and in the IPL is enough for SA to move forward.
Sending Dwaine Pretorious at number 3 proved crucial for SA. The CSK all-rounder came to bat in the 3rd over. He scored at the strike rate of 223.08. This helped Miller and RVD to chase the target effectively. Miller and RVD registered the highest partnership of 131 runs for SA for the fourth wicket. Besides that, the duo added 126 runs in the last 10 overs - most by any team in a successful chase in that period of T20I. Debutant Tristan Stubbs didn’t get a chance to play. But the right-handed batter has the potential to pace the innings in the final overs of the game.
Kagiso Rabada will continue to lead the pace attack for SA with Wayne Parnell and Anrich Nortje. The trio had an economy of less than 9. This was the deciding factor as Indian pacers went for more than 10. With Pretorious playing as an all-rounder, South Africa’s dependency will be on their spin attack. Unfortunately, Maharaj and Shamsi gave 70 runs in 5 overs and took a wicket.
Key Players: Quinton de Kock, David Miller, Kagiso Rabada
Temba Bavuma (C), Quinton de Kock, Tristan Stubbs, Keshav Maharaj, Wayne Parnell, David Miller, Anrich Nortje, Dwaine Pretorius, Kagiso Rabada, Tabraiz Shamsi, Rassie van der Dussen.
Heinrich Klaasen, Anrich Nortje, Rassie van der Dussen, Tabraiz Shamsi, Reeza Hendricks, Wayne Parnell, David Miller, Dwaine Pretorius, Kagiso Rabada, Keshav Maharaj, Temba Bavuma
The weather will be partly cloudy. The temperature will range between 28 and 38°C. The wind will be flowing from the northeast at 17-18 kmh. The pitch is bowling friendly. A variable bounce can be seen from pacers. More to that, the pitch assists spinners. Over the period, it is seen that spinners have more wickets here than pacers.
The 2nd T20I between India and South Africa will be played at Barabuti Stadium, Cuttack The venue holds a capacity of 45000 spectators and has hosted 2 tests, 19 ODIs & 2 T20Is so far. The stadium is known for Anil Kumble’s 10 for 74 against Pakistan. The venue came into the headlines for the wrong reason, when SA took on India in a T20I in October 2015. SA bowled India out for 92 and won the game by 6 wickets.
In 2 T20Is, the results have been equally split between teams batting first and second. But the average 1st innings score is 136. Hence team winning the toss should bat first.
The first T20I between India and SA showed flaws in the captaincy of Rishabh Pant. While he didn’t finish the 4-over quota of IPL’s leading wicket-taker Yuzvendra Chahal, he didn’t keep pacers to bowl the final over. With India’s 14-match unbeaten streak over, SA has a chance to capitalize on their form. SA have won 13 of their last 15 T20Is. They are now 6 games unbeaten against India in all formats of cricket (2 Tests, 3 ODIs, and 1 T20I). Hence SA will have more chances to beat the hosts once again at home.
We predict that South Africa will defeat India.
