The fourth T20I between India and South Africa is scheduled to take place at Saurashtra Cricket Association Stadium, Rajkot on 17th June from 7:00 pm. India beat South Africa by 48 runs to keep the 5-match T20I series alive. This was India’s biggest margin of victory by runs against South Africa. The series is poised at 2-1 with two games to play on the 17th of and 19th of June.

After losing the first two games, Indian players stepped up right when needed. Opening batters put a stand of 97 runs in the first 10 overs. Both Ruturaj Gaikwad (57) and Ishan Kishan (54) scored half-centuries. SA bowlers made a comeback to restricting Indian batters to score freely. It was Hardik Pandya who scored 31 off 21 deliveries to take India to 179 runs for the loss of 5 wickets. Chasing the target, South Africa suffered regular blowbacks as the wickets kept falling. Yuzvendra Chahal took 3 for 20 followed by Harshal Patel who finished the game with 4 wickets for 25.

This was India’s first victory against South Africa this year after losing 7 matches in all formats of the game. On the other hand, This was South Africa’s second loss in the last 15 T20Is and 1st in the last 8. The fourth game is a must-win game for India to keep the series alive. Looking at the records of SA in India, It will be a tough task for Rishabh Pant to repeat the heroics of his soldiers.

India Preview

The decision of playing an unchanged side worked out well for India. They are unlikely to add a new entrant for the fourth game too. Openers Kishan and Ruturaj now have 2 fifty-plus opening stands in this series. Kishan has amassed 164 runs in 3 games at a strike rate of 157.69. He has recently risen by 68 places to enter into the top 10 T20I batters at 7th place. Gaikwad hit 5 fours to Anrich Nortje in his first over of the game. This performance has taken his run tally to 81 at a strike rate of 150. Shreyas Iyer has been used to attack Shamsi and Maharaj in the middle. His strike rate against spinners is above 200 but it falls below 100 against the pace. His strike rate (123.29) is the worst amongst the Indian batters in this tournament.

Indian middle-order hasn’t collectively performed yet. Pant has thrown his wicket playing similar shots in all three matches. He averages 13.33. He hasn’t scored a white ball 50 since February. Pandya has played two crucial knocks (31* in 12 and 31* in 21) in this series so far. India is experimenting with the batting positions of Axar and Dinesh Karthik. Ideally, it should be Karthik above Axar to keep the run flow going in the 11-20 overs.

Yuzvendra Chahal showed his best performance at Visakhapatnam by taking 3 wickets for 20. He practically bowled out the top order including that of Pretorious, Van der Dussen, and Klassen. Harshal Patel and Bhuvneshwar Kumar will be the obvious choice to finish 8 overs after bagging 6 wickets each in the first three games. Avesh Khan’s inclusion might be in doubt. Khan has bowled decent in the first three games but hasn’t taken a single wicket.

Key Players: Ishan Kishan, Yuzvendra Chahal, Harshal Patel.

India Predicted Playing XI:

Rishabh Pant (C & WK), Ruturaj Gaikwad, Ishan Kishan, Shreyas Iyer, Hardik Pandya, Dinesh Karthik, Yuzvendra Chahal, Deepak Hooda, Bhuvaneshwar Kumar, Harshal Patel, Avesh Khan.

South Africa Preview

South Africa still has a chance to maintain their perfect record in the bilateral series in India, if they manage to win the fourth T20I. With Quinton de Kock’s availability for the rest of the series is still under question, Bavuma and Reeza Hendricks will open the innings for SA. Bavuma’s strike rate (110.42) is bit concerning for an opener. But Aiden Markram is now ruled out of the series. SA has no option but to play Bavuma as an opener. Hendricks scored just 23 in the 3rd T20I. The condition is similar with Dwayne Pretorious. After his thunderous innings in the 1st game, he has failed to capitalize on the opportunity to score at number 3.

Van der Dussen played a match-winning knock of 75 off 46 balls in the first T20I. Since then he has got out on 1 in both games. SA’s middle order struggled against the spin in the 3rd game. Henrich Klassen was the only positive from the innings as he scored 29 in 24 before getting out to Chahal. David Miller has scored at a strike rate of 170.59 so far. His form will be crucial for SA to win the fourth game.

Rabada, Nortje, and Parnell will continue to lead the pace attack. Though the trio has been economical, they have taken just 7 wickets in the first three games. The case is not different with the SA’s spin attack. Maharaj and Shamsi have been giving almost 11 runs per over. The duo has taken 4 wickets and is ineffective throughout the series. SA can try replacing either one of them with Lungi Ngidi or Marco Jansen.

Key Players: Rassie Van der Dussen, David Miller, Henrich Klassen

South Africa Predicted Playing XI:

Temba Bavuma (C), Reeza Hendricks, Henrich Klassen, Keshav Maharaj, Wayne Parnell, David Miller, Anrich Nortje, Dwaine Pretorius, Kagiso Rabada, Lungi Ngidi, Rassie van der Dussen.

Weather Conditions

The weather will be partly cloudy. The temperature will range between 27 and 37°C. The wind will be flowing from the southwest at 15-25 kmh. The pitch offers assistance to batters. It can be a high scoring game just like the earlier three games played here.

Venue Details

The 4th T20I between India and South Africa will be played at Saurashtra Cricket Association Stadium, Rajkot. The venue holds a capacity of 28000 spectators and has hosted 2 tests, 3 ODIs & 3 T20Is so far. Cheteshwar Pujara and Ravindra Jadeja have scored triple centuries in domestic cricket at the same venue.

Toss: To Bowl

In 3 T20Is, teams have successfully chased the target. Though the average first innings score is higher than the second, chasing will be preferred here. India have successfully chased a target of 202 against Australia back in 2013 when Yuvraj Singh played a knock of 77 in just 35 deliveries. The team winning the toss should field first.

In the third T20I, India showed some sign of improvement. Both batting and bowling departments clicked. But at the same time, their vulnerable middle-order got exposed. South Africa had similar drawbacks and ended up losing their first T20I after 8 games. Overall, SA’s bowling attack has shown average performances. With de Kock and Markram not available, their batting order might find it difficult to play against the Indian bowling unit. India have a tendency to fight back in the home series especially when they are down. They are preferred to win the fourth T20I.

We predict that India will defeat South Africa.
