White ball cricket is finally returning back to India after a gap of 10 months. India is looking forward to hosting West Indies in 3 matches ODI series at Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad. The first game of the tournament will be played on 6th February from 1:30 PM local time. Both India and West Indies have been struggling in ODIs and therefore looking forward to the bilateral series going up in the 2020-2023 ICC World Cup Super League points table.
Recently, India came back empty-handed from the South Africa tour. They lost the Test series 2-1 after going 1 up at the start. What followed was a disaster in the ODI series which they lost 3-0. India missed Rohit Sharma throughout the tour due to an injury. He will be returning back this series. Except for Shikhar Dhawan, Virat Kohli, and Jaspreet Bumrah Indian batting and bowling order failed to impress on African Soil. Current coach Rahul Dravid looked helpless while receiving his third out of the four series loss under his management. There was a lot of distraction in the middle of the tour when Virat Kohli stepped down from his successful Test captain stint. Therefore, the ODI series will be a step forward under the captaincy of fully appointed ODI & T20 captain Rohit Sharma.
West Indies hosted Ireland at Sabina Park, Jamaica before travelling to India. The hosts lost the series 2-1 after gaining a 1-0 lead at the start. With the loss, West Indies have now only one win in their last 5 ODI series. After the ODI series, West Indies hosted England for a 5-match T20 series which they ended up winning 3-2. West Indies is returning on Indian soil after a gap of 3 years. The last time when both teams played against each other, India went on to win the series 2-1. Surprisingly, West Indies won an ODI series against India way back in 2006. Since then, India registered a series win on all 11 outings. The series is a part of the 2020-2023 ICC World Cup Super League. While India has already qualified for the World Cup being host, West Indies has a long way to go for the direct qualification. They are currently 7th in the points table with just 50 points in 12 ODIs.
The newly appointed full-time ODI captain Rohit Sharma will be looking forward to building a new team under his umbrella. But he has a lot of things to be taken care of. India has lost three of their last 5 ODI series. And things are getting worse for the Indian side as three of their players tested positive for Covid before the start of the series. Shikhar Dhawan, Shreyas Iyer, and Ruturaj Gaikwad are set to miss the series following their positive results. India will also miss KL Rahul in order to attend his sister’s wedding. BCCI has added Mayank Agarwal to the roaster. Looks like, he will open with Rohit Sharma. West Indian attack is not new to the Indian skipper. He has an average of 60.92 in 31 innings including 3 centuries and 11 half-centuries.
Ex-skipper Virat Kohli was in great touch on the South Africa tour. He added 2 fifties in 3 games, to take his tally to 9 fifty-plus scores in the last 14 innings. Though the centuries are not coming from India’s one of the greatest batsmen, West Indies should worry about his current form. Rishabh Pant will take the gloves for India. He along with Suryakumar Yadav will strengthen the middle-order of India. Selectors have made some surprise inclusions including Batting all-rounder Deepak Hooda. But recent batting performances from Shardul Thakur and Deepak Chahar will make them obvious choices over him.
Jaspreet Bumrah has been rested for the tour. Ravichandran Ashwin will also miss the series due to an injury. India have picked four spinners in the squad. Washington Sundar and Kuldeep Yadav have been called up to the squad. Leg spinner Ravi Bishnoi also received his maiden ODI call. Mohammad Siraj will take the lead of the bowling unit in the absence of Bumrah and Mohammad Shami. Avesh Khan is likely to get an ODI cap as the second pacer.
Key Players: Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Yuzvendra Chahal.

Kieron Pollard has retained his captaincy after a poor show against Ireland. Justin Greaves has been dropped from the squad after registering just 29 runs in 3 ODIs against Ireland. Wicket-Keeper opener Shai Hope will likely get a new partner to start the innings. Nkrumah Bonner and Brandon King are added to the roaster. Brandon King showed a good touch against England in the T20 series with 122 runs at an average of 30.50. Nicolas Pooran and Shamarh Brooks will complete the top order for West Indies. Brooks was the leading run-scorer with 137 runs at an average of 45.67.
West Indies have bigger problems with their middle-order. Except for Shai Hope, none of them contributed much against Ireland. If India exploits this flaw, it will become difficult for West Indies. Kieron Pollard and Jason Holder will be the key to the middle-order. Holder became the first West Indian player to get a hat-trick in T20Is. He took four wickets in four deliveries against England. West Indies’ most experienced player all-rounder should up his ODI game with IPL auctions are in line at the end of the series.
West Indies has recalled Kemar Roach to the squad. He last represented West Indies in ODIs in 2019. He will take the charge with Odean Smith and Romario Shephard. Keeping the spinning tracks in mind, West Indies have Akeal Hossein and Hayden Walsh Jr. to their rescue. Akeal Hossein took 6 wickets against Ireland and was the leading wicket-taker for West Indies.
Key Players: Shai Hope, Jason Holder, Shamarh Brooks
Kieron Pollard (C), Fabian Allen, Darren, Bravo, Shamarh Brooks, Jason Holder, Shai Hope, Akeal Hosein, Brandon King, Nicholas Pooran, Kemar Roach, Odean Smith.

The weather will be clear throughout the ODI. The temperature will range between 30°C and 13°C with winds blowing at 4kmph. The Ahmedabad pitch is bowling-friendly. It slows down in the latter part of the game. The average of 242 runs for the first innings shows it is difficult to score runs on this pitch.
The match will be played at the Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad. The Stadium has a capacity to accommodate more than 1,10,000 spectators and has hosted 21 ODIs before its revamp. If you go back in history, West Indies have won 2 of their last three games at this venue.
This will be the first ODI hosted by the Ahmedabad Stadium after it got a new look. Out of the 21 ODIs played at the old ground, the team batting first has won 11 times - just one more than the team chasing the target. The team winning the toss should bat first.
It is a home game for India. They haven’t lost a series against the visitors on the last 11 occasions. They have 7 victories in the last 10 games against West Indies. More to that they are hurt after getting whitewashed against Africa. With Talisman Rohit Sharma back in the squad and the current form of Virat Kohli, India are the clear favorites.
We predict that India will defeat West Indies.
