Tournament: West Indies tour of India, 2022 | Format: ODI | Venue: Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad, India | Toss: To Bowl
Bet NowA power-packed performance from the bowling unit followed by a scintillating batting display saw India breezing past West Indies in the series opener. The second match of the series will be played on 9th February from 1:30 PM local time at Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad. This will be India’s fourth consecutive home soil series victory and twelfth in a row against the West Indies if they manage to win.
The newly appointed Indian skipper won the toss and invited the visitors to bat. In-form batsman Shai Hope lost his wicket to Mohammad Siraj in the third over. But Brandon King and birthday boy Darren Bravo kept the scorecard moving. Washington Sundar who was in the squad after a long gap provided two breakthroughs in a single over and the West Indies middle-order fell down like a castle of the cards. Jason Holder provided some resistance to take his team from 79 for 7 to a respectable but not enough total of 176. Yuzvendra Chahal took 4 for 49 to cross the 100 wicket ODI mark.
With an easily achievable target, Rohit Sharma made a punishable start with Ishan Kishan. The pair added 84 runs for the first wicket in just 13 overs. Sharma scored 60 off 51 balls with 10 fours and a six. Suryakumar Yadav and debutant Deepak Hooda added a partnership of 62 runs to hand a victory in the 1000th ODI for India.
West Indies are now have just one victory against India in their last 10 outings. Their recent ODI stats have been poor. The last time they had an upper edge on India was 15 years back in 2006. Since then they have lost 11 ODI series. The road for qualifications of ICC ODI World Cup 2023 will be tougher for West Indies. The loss has thrown them to the last place in the points table of 2020-2023 ICC World Cup Super League with 50 points in 13 games.
India marked their 1000th ODI with a massive win. It never looked like the camp was affected by 4 Covid cases that saw in-form opener Shikhar Dhawan and the main team player Shreyas Iyer miss the series. Rohit Sharma will once again open with his ex-MI teammate Ishan Kishan. Kishan was chosen over Mayank Agarwal after getting added to the roaster in the final stages. He supported Sharma from the other end with 28 runs off 36 balls.
It was not Virat Kohli’s day. the ex-skipper got off the mark with back-to-back boundaries and handed his wicket to Alzarri Joseph on an unusual shot. His departure saw India losing 2 more wickets in 25 runs. But it is never a good choice to take him lightly. The role of the number four batsman given to Rishabh Pant is not going as per the plans. He has hardly performed since his position was fixed. This might force Sharma to change the batting lineup with Suryakumar Yadav getting promoted over Pant. KL Rahul’s availability can see either Hooda or Yadav losing place in the top eleven.
Mohammad Siraj showed a glimpse of his ability to turn the new ball in the first ODI. He will continue to lead the pace attack with Prasidh Krishna who came up with 2 wickets for 29 in his 10 overs. Indian spinners were simply outstanding. The Chahal and Sundar duo sent 7 of the West Indian players packing. There won’t be any change on the spinning front. It will be sad to see Kuldeep Yadav on the bench again.
Key Players: Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Yuzvendra Chahal.

West Indies are getting hammered in ODIs for the last few months. After finishing the T20I series against England, they got just one full practice session before the first game. But it’s no excuse to ignore their batting issues. The underperforming middle order and bowling unit have been a headache to the management. Skipper Kieron Pollard needs to play a captain's knock to boost the performances of his fellow teammates. His batting average is below 27 in 123 games. As an all-rounder, he is not adding value with the ball too.
Shai Hope and Brendon King will continue opening the innings. It is the number three place where West Indies should focus on. Darren Bravo who has been guarding the place for 120 games has an average below 30. It would be better to bring Nkrumah Bonner in the team over Bravo. Nicolas Pooran and Pollard are another two weak links in the batting lineup. The duo should focus on spending more time on the pitch to reduce the burden on Jason Holder at the end. Holder scored a fifty in the first ODI with Fabien Allen at the other end. It will be difficult for him to play the heroics every game.
Pollard brought his old friend Kemar Roach in the team over Romario Shephard and Odean Smith. But the comeback didn’t go well for the 33-year old. He gave 41 runs in 5 overs. Keeping the 2023 World Cup in mind, Smith should get a regular chance over Roach to team up with Alzarri Joseph. Odeon Smith will continue to play the spinner’s role. West Indies must include Hayden Walsh jr. on the spin-friendly pitch.
Key Players: Shai Hope, Jason Holder, Shamarh Brooks

The sunny weather is predicted throughout the ODI. But smoke and Haze will reduce the visibility in the first innings. The temperature will range between 30°C and 15°C with winds blowing at 10-15kmph. The Ahmedabad pitch is bowling-friendly. The first game saw an assist to the spinners.
The Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad will host the second ODI. The Stadium has a capacity to accommodate more than 1,10,000 spectators. SO far 22 ODI games have been played here.
The toss outcomes are mixed at the Ahmedabad Stadium. Both innings share an equal amount of favourable outcomes after winning the toss. Chasing down is somewhat easier since the last few occasions. Therefore team winning the toss should field first.
A dominating performance in the first ODI clearly shows India are in control of their game. Visitor struggled badly in the first match of the series. Their recent record against India has been poor. The 8 victories in the last 10 matches against West Indies and three consecutive series wins on home soil make India favourites against West Indies.
We predict that India will defeat West Indies.
