It was a heartbreak for Ireland as they lost by 1 run in the last ODI of the series. It could have easily been the 4th highest run chase in the history of the game, but it wasn’t to be. Though the scoresheet would read Ireland suffering a 0-3 loss against New Zealand in the ODI series, the competition was tougher. With some luck, the hosts could have won the series 2-1. They would have to put this behind them and bring a positive approach to the T20s.

The Irish side comes in this game with a poor record at this venue. They have won only once in the last seven games they have played here. The side is also not winning close games which can be demoralizing for any team. New Zealand have rested their top players and fielding a less experienced team, and this is expected to make this contest exciting.

Ireland Preview

Andrew Balbirnie’s side shall look to put the disappointment of the ODI series behind their backs as they head into this game. They had offered stiff competition to the Kiwis in the last T20 series at home and have done well against the Kiwis in the ODI series. They have good hitters of the ball in the side and the Irish skipper would like them to go out and play positive cricket in this game.

Paul Stirling would be confident after his brilliant hundred in the last game, and he must take on the Kiwi bowlers opening the batting with Andrew Balbirnie. Gareth Delany comes at No. 3 strengthening their batting and shall aim to build quick partnerships with Harry Tector and Lorcan Tucker who have done well in recent games. The side would expect quick runs from the bats of George Dockrell, Andy McBrine, and Craig Young down the order.

Their bowling attack looked rusty during the ODIs as most bowlers did not trouble the New Zealanders. The side would need Mark Adair and Joshua Little to hit the Kiwi top order which did well in the last ODI. Craig Young and McBrine have lots of experience and the side would have high expectations from them in this game. Conor Olphert, the young fast bowler shall look to make his mark in this game.

Ireland Predicted Playing XI:

Andrew Balbirnie (c), Paul Stirling, Gareth Delany, Harry Tector, Lorcan Tucker (wk), George Dockrell, Andy McBrine, Mark Adair, Craig Young, Joshua Little, Conor Olphert

New Zealand Preview

Mitchell Santner who would be leading the side in the T20 games won’t take the Irish side lightly. They gave a glimpse of their skills and abilities during the ODIs, and the New Zealand skipper would like his side to play at their best. The team has several fresh faces and would look to cement their place in the side with strong performances. Santner would want to see his bowlers do well as the Irish side has good hitters of the ball.

Martin Guptill and Finn Allen are both in good form and the pair shall look to provide an electrifying start to the side in this game. The middle order has some of the best players in this format and the side would expect runs from the bats of Glenn Phillips, Mark Chapman, and Darryl Mitchell. The side bats deep and they have good hitters of the ball in Dane Cleaver, Dane Cleaver, and Santner.

The bowling attack would face a tough challenge in the game as Ireland has powerful hitters of the ball. They would need a good opening spell from Lockie Ferguson and Blair Tickner. Sodhi and Santner would need to use their variations well as the wicket isn’t likely to offer them much assistance. Duffy is an experienced bowler in this format and the side would like to see him excel.

New Zealand Predicted Playing XI:

Mitchell Santner (c), Martin Guptill, Finn Allen, Darryl Mitchell, Lockie Ferguson, Blair Tickner, Glenn Phillips, Ish Sodhi, Mark Chapman, Dane Cleaver (wk), Jacob Duffy

Weather Conditions

It would be clear skies over Belfast on July 18. We expect to see a flat surface where batsmen would have a good time though the wicket would get slower as the game progresses. Given the kind of batting firepower, the two sides have the team that bats first in this game would be aiming at a score of 180 runs.

Venue Details

Civil Service Cricket Club, Belfast is a small venue with shorter squarer boundaries. Fast bowlers have done well on this surface in the past as the ball moves around. It is a good venue for the batsmen, and they can play their strokes easily and score runs. There isn’t much on this surface for the spinners and they will have to use their variations well in this game.

Toss: To Bat

The last four games at this venue have seen sides winning by big margins batting first. The wicket is best to bat at the start of the game and gets slower making run chases difficult here. The side winning the toss would have this in mind and shall be looking to bat first and put up a big score on the board.

Ireland did well in the ODIs, but they were unlucky to have been whitewashed in the series. Their batting line-up looks good, but the side would need a better show from its bowlers to put up a challenge against the visitors. New Zealand looks strong with the bat, and they have depth in their batting line-up. We expect this to be a close game, but New Zealand are a better side, and they would start favorites.
