After drawing the Ashes series with England Women, the Australian Women's team are up for a new challenge. They will be travelling to Ireland to play a three-match ODI series as a part of the ICC Women’s Championship 2022/23-25. The first ODI of the series will be played at Castle Avenue, Dublin on 23rd July from 3:15 pm. This will be the first time after 18 years both teams will lock horns against each other.
Ireland Women are coming with 8 losses in the 9 games of the ICC Women’s Championship. They had lost 3-0 to South Africa Women & Pakistan Women followed by a 2-0 loss against West Indies Women. They are at the last position of the points table with 0 points after a 6-wickets loss against WI Women. All eyes will be on Gaby Lewis who is the only batter from the Irish side to catch an eye.
On the other hand, Australia Women had a reset moment after ending the Ashes series as a draw. After winning the only Test, the Aussie Women lost the T20WI as well as the ODI series to England. Even the only ODI win was not convincible as they held the fort by just 3 runs. Aus-W are now in 6th place in the ICC Women’s Championship 2022/23-25 with 8 points.
It will be a chance for Australia Women to climb to the top of the points table if they manage to win all games. The defending World Champions met Ireland Women back in 2005 in Dublin. The game ended with Australia Women registering a 240-run victory over the home side. Well, one can say things haven’t changed a bit as Australia Women are expected to win the series 3-0.
Ireland Women are having a tough ICC Women’s Championship cycle as they have lost all of their games. Except for, opener Gaby Lewis no other batter has displayed a show so far. She is the only batter from the Irish side to average more than 30. Lewis has scored 305 runs in 9 games at an average of 38.12 including three half-centuries. She remained unbeaten on 95 in the last outing against the West Indies Women. She will be the top player to look out for.
The middle order has been below par for Ireland Women. Numbers 5 to 8 have scored just 57 runs in the last three games losing their wickets 10 times. With an almighty attack of the Australian side, it will be more difficult for the home side to with an average of 5.7 in the middle. Skipper Laura Delany at number four will have to play a big inning with Lewis to cope with the situation. Delany has 163 runs in 9 games with an average of 27.16.
In 8 innings of the Championship, the Irish bowling attack has managed to take just 25 wickets. Ariene Kelly is their leading wicket-taker with 5 wickets. But her average is above 60. Aimee Maguire will be the bowler to watch out for. Maguire took 2 wickets in the only game she played so far at an average of 12.
Key Players: Gaby Lewis, Laura Delany, Aimee Maguire.
Gaby Lewis, Laura Delany, Aimee Maguire, Leah Paul, Orla Prendergast, Amy Hunter, Eimar Richardson, Mary Waldron, Sophie MacMahon, Ava Canning, Cara Murray.
The World Champions can’t be compared with the minnows of the game. Though they lost the series against England, there is no doubt that they will come back stronger. Alyssa Healy will open the innings with Phoebe Litchfield. Healy scored just 28 runs in three games against England Women. But facing Ireland Women will be a cakewalk for her. Litchfield on the other hand has 193 runs in 6 games at an average of 48.25. Healy will be the top player from the Aussie side.
With Meg Lanning out of the equation, Ellyse Perry has taken over the number three slot. The all-rounder has scored 202 runs in 5 innings at an average of 50.50. But her bowling hasn’t been effective. Perry has just 1 wicket in 4 innings she bowled. Beth Mooney in the middle will be a headache for the home side. She is the leading run-scorer for Australia Women in this cycle with 321 runs at an average of 80.25. She has scored a century and two half-centuries in the last 6 games. It looks like the batting will hardly come to number five place.
All-rounder Ashleigh Gardener will lead the bowling attack with Jess Jonassen and Amy Sutherland. Gardner has 14 wickets in 6 ODIs at an average of 13.92. She also has scored 114 runs in 4 innings with the bat. Alana King will be the spin option for Australia Women who has been averaging below 30 with the ball with 7 wickets. No doubt, Gardner will be the key bowler in this series.
Key Players: Alyssa Healy, Ellyse Perry, Ashleigh Gardner.
Alyssa Healy, Ellyse Perry, Ashleigh Gardner, Phoebe Litchfield, Tahila McGrath, Beth Mooney, Annabelle Sutherland, Georgia Wareham, Jess Jonassen, Alana King, Heather Graham.
The weather will be mostly cloudy. The temperature will range between 11 and 16. The wind will be flowing from the west at 15-20 kmh. Rain is predicted on the game day. With the entire week under the rain, the pitch and outfield will be slow. there could be some assistance for the seamers, especially in the early hours of the day. The grass covering might also provide some even bounce to the pacers, making it crucial for them to pitch the ball in the right areas to exploit any movement on offer. Spinners might not find too much assistance initially, but as the match progresses, the pitch could wear out and offer some turn and grip for the spin bowlers.
The 1st ODI between Ireland Women and Australia Women will be played at Castle Avenue, Dublin on 23rd July from 3:15 pm. The venue has a capacity of 15000 spectators and has hosted 8 ODIs & 5 T20Is. Ireland Women have the lowest score recorded (114) at this venue.
In the 8 ODIs, the results have favoured teams defending the target. The team bowling first has won in 4 games. The team winning the toss should bowl first with the average score of the first innings lesser than the second.
It will be a choice to choose between Ferrari and Toyota. Though the world champions have lost two of their last ODIs, they are unbeaten against Ireland Women. Their batting order is highly rewardable and the bowling unit is far above the hosts. It is looking like a practice game for Australia Women. Ashleigh Gardner’s 5 wickets, ELysse Perry and Alyssa Healy’s 50+ score will be the bold prediction.
We predict that Australia Women will defeat Ireland Women.
