We are midway in the Lanka Premier League 2021 and the Jaffna Kings would be up against the Kandy Warriors in the 12th game of the season. The Jaffna Kings sit at the top of the points table and come here with a big win against the Colombo Stars. The Kandy Warriors did well in the last game to defeat the Galle Gladiators. 

It hasn’t been a good season for the Kandy Warriors as they have won just once in the four games they have played and must win this one to be in the hunt for a place in the playoffs. They had lost earlier against the Jaffna Kings and shall look to even it out here. The Kings on the other hand would like to continue with their momentum and retain the top spot on the points table.

It has been three wins in a row for Thisara Perera’s side and they are looking in top form going into this contest. They batted well to put up a big score in a rain-affected game against the Colombo Stars winning it by 93 runs under the DLS method. They had defeated the Kandy Warriors in the earlier game and Perera would look for a similar effort from his side in this game and book and a berth in the playoffs.  

Rahmanullah Gurbaz hasn’t scored runs yet and the side would like to see him deliver the goods in this game opening the batting with Avishka Fernando. In the middle order, the side has in-form players with Ashen Bandara, Tom Kohler-Cadmore, and Shoaib Malik scoring runs in the last game. Perera has been in good form with the bat and adds solidity to this batting line-up with Chaturanga de Silva and Wanindu Hasaranga. 

Maheesh Theekshana has been brilliant with the ball so far and he would look to exploit the weakness that the Warriors have at the top. Suranga Lakmal was expensive in the last game and would aim to tighter spells here. Wahab Riaz, Hasaranga, and Chaturanga de Silva bring in good variety to this attack and this would add to the side’s confidence in this game.

Kandy Warriors Preview

After three consecutive losses, Angelo Perera’s side finally registered its first win of the season in the last game against the Galle Gladiators. The side bowled well to keep the Gladiators to a small total and chased it down with 5 wickets in hand. The challenge for them would be to maintain this momentum and do well in this game to keep their hopes alive for a place in the playoffs. 

Openers have been a cause of worry for the side and the side would need a positive show from Charith Asalanka and TM Sampath in this game. Angelo Perera and Kamindu Mendis would have to do well in the middle order after having been inconsistent in most of the games. Tom Moores and Minod Bhanuka look in good form and they would have an important role down the order. 

Their bowlers made a strong comeback after the hammering they took in the previous two games. Shiraz Ahmed and Nimesh Vimukthi have looked in good form, but the side would expect to see tighter spells from Sampath in this game. Sachin Colombage, Mendis, and Al-Amin Hossain would have to do well as the Kings have a very strong batting line-up.

We are likely to see overcast skies and spells of rain at Colombo on December 12. The batting conditions are likely to be slightly difficult from what we have seen so far in the tournament. Bowlers are likely to enjoy the conditions in this game but the side batting first would need 160 runs or more on the board to feel confident.

Venue Details

R.Premadasa Stadium, Colombo has a flat track and a quick outfield which has been a paradise for the batsmen. The conditions are difficult for the fast bowlers as they don’t get any movement from the surface. Spinners on the other hand have enjoyed good rewards from the surface in the past.

Toss: To Bat

The batting conditions are expected to be at their best at the start of the game. It is an afternoon game and most sides have preferred to bat first on winning the toss. We expect this trend to continue here and the side winning the toss would have little hesitation in batting first.
