Two time title holders Kolkata Knight Riders would begin their campaign when they play the reigning champions Mumbai Indians in the 5th game of the Indian Premier League 2020. The Knight Riders haven’t had good memories for the last five seasons and the team would have set its eyes on a perfect start this season. Mumbai Indians on the other hand would target their first points for the season after they started with a loss against the Chennai Super Kings in the tournament opener.
Kolkata Knight Riders would feel the pressure due to their poor record against the Mumbai Indians. They have hardly won anything between the two sides in the last five seasons and lost out by big margins in several games. Their bowling attack lacks depth which will be concerning. Mumbai Indians on the other hand have good balance in their side. It is likely to be a high scoring game with good hitters of the ball in both the teams.
Dinesh Karthik would look to erase the memories of the last season where the KKR were a one-man army and depended solely on Andre Russell to win games for them. He would be looking to start on a winning note in the season. Karthik would be aware of the poor record they have against Mumbai Indians and need his players to rise up to the challenge going into this game.
Their batting line-up looks pretty strong with Shubman Gill and Sunil Narine opening the batting for the side. Both these players have their range of strokes. Eoin Morgan, Rinku Singh and Nitish Rana add good balance to this middle order and they will need to set the stage for Andre Russell and Karthik to launch the attack in the final overs of the game. The side would be expecting a good show from the top order which was one of their problem areas last season.
Their bowling attack is relatively inexperienced and the side would look at Pat Cummins to do well with the new ball alongside Kamalesh Nagerkoti who will finally play in the IPL. Shivam Mavi is another promising bowler the side has. It will be interesting to see how Narine and Kuldeep Yadav bowl in this game as they have immense talent but the dew factor would be a concern if they need to bowl in the second innings.

Top Bowler – Kuldeep Yadav
Dinesh Karthik (c & wk), Eoin Morgan, Shubman Gill, Sunil Narine, Andre Russell, Pat Cummins, Nitish Rana, Kuldeep Yadav, Rinku Singh, Shivam Mavi, Kamalesh Nagerkoti

Rohit Sharma’s side made a poor start in the tournament going down by 5 wickets in their opening game against the Chennai Super Kings. The defending champions who are known for being poor starters in the tournament will need to win this one to avoid putting themselves under pressure. Their record against Kolkata Knight Riders has been brilliant over the last few seasons and Sharma would like his men to draw inspiration from those wins.
The opening pair of Rohit Sharma and Quinton de Kock will need to convert their starts which they failed to do in the last game. Suryakumar Yadav and Saurabh Tiwari looked good and they will need to play the anchor’s role in the middle order. It is however in the lower middle order that needs to do well. The side would expect better show from Hardik Pandya, Kieron Pollard and Krunal Pandya who were tied down in the last game and failed to push up the scoring rate.
Their bowling attack would have to make improvements in the next game after the poor outing against Chennai. Jasprit Bumrah was expensive and as the team’s strike bowler he needs to do well. Trent Boult and James Pattinson bowled well in the last game. Rahul Chahar and Krunal Pandya struggled to bowl tight lines and they will have to come up with a better show. Hardik Pandya and Pollard add to the bowling options for the skipper.
Top Batsmen – Rohit Sharma
Top Bowler – Jasprit Bumrah
Rohit Sharma (c), Quinton de Kock (wk), Suryakumar Yadav, Saurabh Tiwary, Krunal Pandya, Hardik Pandya, Kieron Pollard, James Pattinson, Rahul Chahar, Trent Boult, Jasprit Bumrah

It would a hot and humid evening at Abu Dhabi on September 23 and this will make the conditions perfect for a good game of T20 cricket. The wicket is expected to be flat where batsmen would fancy hitting the ball on the up. There would be little for the bowlers and conditions would become tough for bowling as the game progresses. The side batting first would need a score in excess of 175 runs to feel comfortable on this surface.
Sheikh Zayed Stadium, Abu Dhabi is one of the biggest venues in UAE but it has a batting friendly wicket and a fast outfield. Batsmen enjoy batting here as there are plenty of scoring opportunities. Fast bowlers struggle here in the latter overs when the ball gets old. Spinners have done well at this venue without the dew but it gets tough to bowl when the ball gets wet.
Dew troubled the bowlers in the second innings of the opening game at this venue. It was extremely difficult for the spinners to grip the ball. The last six games at this venue have seen the side winning chasing the score on five occasions. The skipper winning the toss would have little hesitation in opting to bowl on this surface.
All in all this is expected to be a very good game of cricket. Kolkata Knight Riders would be happy to find the Mumbai Indians under pressure at the moment and look to exploit this scenario. But the side would have to see good show from its batting which has let them down in the last two seasons. As for Mumbai Indians they would like to see the last loss as their record of being poor starters in IPL year after year. They have a strong batting line-up and good depth in their bowling which shall make them favorites in this game.
