It will be a clash between the bottom two teams as KwaZulu-Natal Inland take on Western Province on November 11 at City Oval in Pietermaritzburg. Both teams have lost their first matches of the season and will be eager to get their first points on the board.
KwaZulu-Natal are coming off a crushing innings and 61-run loss to the defending champions Dolphins at Durban. Dolphins first posted 404-8 after batting first and went on to bundle out KwaZulu-Natal for 113 and 230 to win the match comfortably.
While it was a disappointing result for KwaZulu-Natal, they did show some sparks of brilliance. Opener Ben Compton showed terrific composure to score 61 off 167 balls in the second innings. The left-handed batter has plenty of experience playing in the English county circuit and can prove to be the most valuable player for the team this season.
Keith Dudgeon’s 70 off 183 balls in the second innings was another bright spark. He, along with captain Michael Erlank, will be absolutely vital in this match if KwaZulu-Natal have to make an impression.
Among the bowlers, it was only left-arm seamer Mbulelo Budaza who stood out against the onslaught with a brilliant spell of 3-54. We expect him to do well here too. Left-arm spinner Smangaliso Nhlebela will also have an important role to play.

Western Province would be disappointed with their performance in their first match of the season. They went down by 106 runs against Lions at Cape Town while chasing a target of 381. In their two innings in the match, they managed 271 and 274, respectively.
The onus will now be on the batters to do a better job against KwaZulu-Natal. Kyle Simmonds was the standout performer for them in the last match, scoring a brilliant knock of 120 down the order and grabbing two wickets with his left-arm spin.
Captain Kyle Verreynne is their main batter to watch out for. He was their leading run-getter last season with over 500 runs to his name, and showed his class with a an attractive 68 in the second innings of the match against Lions.
David Bedingham (60 in the second innings of the previous game) and Tony de Zorzi (507 runs in 6 innings last season) are two batters worth watching out for as well.
Left-arm seamer Nandre Burger picked up 6 wickets in the last game. He bowled with a lot of heart and kept things tight. The experience of Beuran Hendricks, who now has 359 first-class wickets, will also be handy here.

The pitch at City Oval in Pietermaritzburg is usually pretty good for batting, with help for seam bowlers when the ball is new. No Test matches have been played at this venue, so it’s unclear how the surface will behave throughout the four days. However, if it’s a typical South African pitch, then it should help the fast bowlers on the first day and get better for batting later on.
The weather in Pietermaritzburg will be hot on the first day of the math but will gradually start to get cooler on the remaining days.
The inaugural first-class cricket match at City Oval, then named Alexandra Park, took place during the 1894/95 season. Over the years, City Oval has served as a prominent venue for South African A side matches and international touring teams. There have just been five international matches played at the ground so far. The last international men’s cricket match played at the venue was in the 2003 World Cup between India and Namibia. India won the match by 181 runs after posting 311-2.
This venue usually favors the team batting second. In the 73 matches played here, 30 were won batting first and 40 were won batting second, while three games were postponed due to weather.
Out of the last five encounters between KwaZulu-Natal Inland and Western Province, three have ended in draws, and the remaining two have seen each team securing one win apiece. In this game, KwaZulu-Natal will certainly enjoy the home advantage, but they will need to bat a lot better than what they did in their first match of the season. Western Province looks like a much stronger and better all-round side on paper and should prevail in this contest.
Back Western Province to emerge victorious in this match.
