The Royal London One Day Cup has reached the final stage of the group matches and it's Durham who will take on Leceistershire to conclude their sub-par season. The final game of the group stage will be played at Grace Road, Leicester on 23rd August from 3:30 pm. Both teams have suffered a defeat in their respective last games. But it’s Leceistershire whose fate will decide the knockout qualification.
Durham failed to chase the target of 276 runs set by Warwickshire at Edgbaston. Dom Sibley’s ton took Warwickshire to a respectable total of 275 after Durham bowlers made a superb comeback to restrict their middle-order. Durham opener Graham Clark scored a half-century in the chase but didn’t get the support from the other end. Durham were bowled out on 227 to lose the game by 48 runs.
Leicestershire suffered a massive defeat against Nottinghamshire at home. Notts put 255 runs on the board after rain reduced the game to 47 overs. Chris Wright took 6 wickets for 35 from Leicester's side. Leicestershire lost their 4 wickets for just 12 runs in the first six overs. Wiaan Mulder scored a half-century at the end to take his team to 154. Leicestershire couldn’t even play 30 overs and lost the game by 105 runs (DLS).
The loss against Notts has halted Leicestershire’s qualification for their first playoffs in the history of the Royal London One Day Cup. They can still qualify for the quarterfinal only if they beat Durham. On the other hand, Durham’s season is already over. They have just one win this season that came against Somerset. Leicestershire are favorites to win the game even though their history against Durham depicts a completely different picture.
Nottinghamshire pacer Brett Hutton’s 7 wickets kept Leicesterhsire’s wait to grab the knockout spot for the first time. The loss pointed out Leicestershire’s top-order problem once again. Openers Nick Welch and Rishi Patel have yet to register a 50 runs stand this season. Welch who scored a century in the first game has scored just 54 runs in the next 6 games. On the other hand, Patel has 49 runs in 7 games which includes three ducks. Fortunately, Louis Kimber is scoring runs at the top. Kimber has 348 runs at an average of 49.71 with 1 century and 4 half-centuries. If the openers fail, skipper Lewis Hill will need to repeat his match-winning performance of 82 against the Notts to stabilize the inning.
Leicestershire has got a sigh of relief in the middle with the outrageous form of Wiaan Mulder. Mulder is currently fourth in the most runs table with 440 runs at an average of 110. One century and four half-centuries at a strike rate of 99.32 from Mulder show his services will be required once again. Aaron Lilley and keeper Harry Swindles have played their parts whenever required but changes in their positions have resulted in trouble for Leicestershire so far.
Chris Wright will be leading the pace unit in the absence of Beuran Hendricks. Wright is their leading wicket-taker with 13 wickets at an average of 19.15. He took 6 wickets in Leceistershire’s defeat against the Notts. None of the other pacers have made an impact for Leicestershire except these two and Wiaan Mulder who has taken 10 wickets.
Key Players: Louis Kimber, Wiaan Mulder, Chris Wright.
Nick Welch, Rishi Patel, Louis Kimber, Arron Lilley, Lewis Hill (c), Wiaan Mulder, Harry Swindells (wk), Edward Barnes, Chris Wright, Will Davis, Michael Finan
With nothing left to earn for Durham, skipper Scott Borthwick won’t be expecting much from his side. Graham Clark and Nic Maddison will open the innings for Durham. Clark is Durham’s leading run scorer with 277 runs at an average of 39.57. Clark has scored back-to-back half-centuries in Durham’s last two games. Maddison’s failure this season has been one of the reasons for Durham’s failure. He has 136 runs in 7games and is yet to play a big inning.
Sean Dickeson and Liam Trevaskis in the middle are Durham’s only options. All-rounder Trevaskis has been superb for Durham this season with both bat and ball. He has scored 220 runs and has taken 9 wickets so far. Plus, he is the most economical bowler from the Durham camp.
Oliver Gibson will lead the pace attack for Durham. Gibson is the leading wicket-taker with 11 wickets. Overall, the pace attack is a problem for Durham. Except for Gibson and Trevaskis, others have failed to impress throughout the season.
Key Players: Graham Clark, Oliver Gibson, Liam Trevaskis.
Graham Clark, Nic Maddinson, Scott Borthwick (c), Sean Dickson, Liam Trevaskis, Paul Coughlin, Tomas Mackintosh (wk), Mitchell Killeen, George Drissell, Stanley McAlindon, Oliver Gibson
The weather will be mostly cloudy with no chance of rain. The temperature will range between 17 and 25°C. The wind will be flowing from the west at 10-25 kmh. The pitch favors batters in the first innings. As the game progresses pacers get a swing as well as the bounce from the pitch.
The match between Leicestershire and Durham will be played at Grace Road, Leicester. The venue holds a capacity of 12000 spectators. It has hosted 1 Test and 16 ODIs. It is the home ground for Leicestershire Cricket Club.
Out of three games played at Grace Road this season, all teams agave defended the target by huge margins. This includes Leicestershire’s 131 runs victory against Warwickshire. The team winning the toss should bat first.
Leicestershire have 5 wins out of 7 this season. This is their most powerful display in the history of the RL One Day Cup. Though the history between these two tilts towards Durham (4 victories in the last 5 matches), they are struggling pretty hard this season. Not only they have just one victory but also they lost their last 4 games. It is a home ground for Leicestershire. They have won 2 out of the three games here this season while batting first.
We predict that Leicestershire will defeat Durham.
