It is the third game of the CSA T20 Challenge 2019 and Lions would be up against the Cape Cobras. Lions had a poor season during the recently concluded Momentum Cup and finished at the bottom of the table. Cape Cobras marched all the way up to the semi-finals of the tournament but lost against the Titans. In the T20 league though Lions have a great record and would want to continue with that.

In the last four T20 games between the two sides Lions had defeated Cape Cobras thrice and it remains to be seen if the Cape Cobras are able to turn it around this time or the Lions maintain their record.

Lions Preview

They finished at the bottom of the table during the Momentum Cup but Temba Bavuma’s side is a much better team than that. They have had a good record in this format and have been one of the most successful teams in the tournament’s history. The skipper would want his side to do well in the format.

Kagiso Rapulana and Reeza Herdricks form a great opening pair for the side and both these batsmen have great hitting abilities. Rassie van der Dussen, Temba Bavuma and Ryan Rickelton form a good middle order for the side and have done well in this format over the years. The side bats deep which make it strong and they can easily take on the Cape Cobras bowling attack.

The bowlers did well in the Momentum Cup and they would carry this confidence into the next game. Bjorn Fortuin and Aaron Phangiso are the main bowlers for the side. Malusi Siboto and Wiaan Mulder add variety to the bowling attack and they are expected to do well in the game.

Lions Predicted Playing XI:

Kagiso Rapulana, Reeza Herdricks, Rassie van der Dussen, Temba Bavuma (c), Ryan Rickelton (wk), Dwaine Pretorius, Beuran Hendricks, Aaron Phangiso, Malusi Siboto, Bjorn Fortuin, Wiaan Mulder

Lions Actual Playing XI:

Nono Pongolo, Reeza Hendricks, Ryan Rickelton, Dwaine Pretorius, Willem Mulder, Wihan Lubbe, B Hendricks, Bjorn Fortuin, Rassie van der Dussen, Temba Bavuma, MP Siboto

Cape Cobras Preview

Dane Piedt would be confident going into this game as his side Cape Cobras had done well in the Momentum Cup losing against the Titans in the semi-finals. With a strong batting unit going into this competition they would be hoping to start the proceedings with a win against the Lions.

JP Duminy’s absence would be felt but Janneman Malan along with Hashim Amla makes a strong opening pair.  They have good strength in the middle order with the likes of Pieter Malan, Jason Smith, Kyle Verreynne and Zubayr Hamza being in good form. These players can score runs quickly against any bowling attack and this would make the side confident going into the game.

The blowing attack looks strong for the side with Dane Piedt in good form and along with Dane Paterson who is in good rhythm they form a good line-up. George Linde and Ferisco Adams are T20 specialists and they are expected to do well with the ball in the upcoming game.

Cape Cobras Predicted Playing XI:

Janneman Malan, Hashim Amla, Pieter Malan, Zubayr Hamza, Jason Smith, Kyle Verreynne (wk), Aviwe Mgijima, Mthiwekhaya Nabe, George Linde, Ferisco Adams, Dane Paterson, Dane Piedt (c)

Cape Cobras Actual Playing XI:

George Linde, David Bedingham, Rory Kleinveldt, Dane Paterson, Hashim Amla, Janneman Malan, Aviwe Mgijima, T Bokako, Vernon Philander, Kyle Verreynne, Simon Khomari

Weather Conditions

It is expected to be a sunny afternoon in Johannesburg with some predictions for rain on the 7th of April.  The pitch which has been a paradise for the batsmen over the years is expected to yield many runs during the game. With hitters on both the sides it is expected to be a high scoring game.

Venue

The New Wanderers Stadium, Johannesburg is the best batting track in South Africa and has a fast outfield. Batsmen have always enjoyed batting here as the ball comes on to the bat easily. It is a tough wicket to bowl on for the bowlers and they need to deceive the batsmen to earn their wickets.

Toss: To Bat

Wanderers is the best batting track in the South Africa and teams over the years has always preferred to bat here first and set up a big total on the board. The skipper winning the toss in the next game is expected to do the same without any hesitation in his mind.

Lions weren’t in great form in the Momentum One Day Cup and lost out many close games while the Cape Cobras did well in the tournament. But T20 is a different format and Lions have been one of the best performing sides in this format in South Africa’s domestic scene. They have dominated Cape Cobras in this format over the last few seasons and this would make them favorites going into this game.
