After winning their first game in the last five outings, Melbourne Renegades are set to host Hobart Hurricanes at Docklands Stadium, Melbourne, on 7th January from 12:35 pm IST. The Renegades have 6 games left and need to win at least 3 to qualify for the knockouts. On the other hand, the Hurricanes must be sulking over the loss against the Strikers.
Hurricanes were on the losing side of the game that saw BBL’s Highest successful run chase. Batting first, Renegades’ Ben McDermott, Caleb Jewell, and Zak Crawley scored half-centuries. Tim David’s short cameo (39 off 20) ensured Renegades set a target of 230 for the Adelaide Strikers. Strikers’ standing captain Matthew Short (100* off 59) and Chris Lynn (64 off 29) made the mammoth chase look easy. The hosts won the game by 7 wickets and 3 balls to spare to hand over the Hurricanes’ their fourth loss of the season.
Melbourne Renegades earned a much-deserving victory against their rivals Melbourne Stars. Batting first, Renegades set a target of 142 runs for the Stars. The match was hit by a controversy when Stars’ bowler Adam Zampa ran out Peter Rogers at the non-striker's end when the latter left his crease early. But the decision was turned over after replays showed that Zampa’s bowling arm had gone past vertical. Rogers then had the final laugh after claiming 5 wickets for 16 runs. Renegades cleared Stars on 108 to take the 33 runs victory.
Hurricanes had an 8 runs victory against the Renegades at the start of the season. Hurricanes defended 122 runs after Riley Meredith and Shadab Khan bowled match-winning spells to claim 6 wickets of the Renegades camp. Renegades and Hurricanes are currently at the 5th and 6th position, respectively, with 8 and 6 points. A win over the visitors can take the Renegades to the 1st position with the same points as that Perth Scorchers and Sydney Thunder.
Renegades started this season with three wins. But the success was short-lived as they lost the next four. Poor performance by the top order was the key reason behind it. Adding more to that is the strike rate of the openers. Martin Guptil has 50 runs in 4 games at a strike rate of 86.20, while Sam Harper has a strike rate just above 100. The Renegades might need to try other combinations to start the innings against the Hurricanes on a higher note.
Aaron Finch is our choice for the top batter. Finch has scored 237 runs in 8 games with two half-centuries. He is amongst the top five run-getters of this season. No other batter has shown the spine for the Renegades this season. With Andre Russell out, the strike rate will be the key concern for Renegades. Shaun Marsh has added himself to the list of injured players. Jake McGurk will be the leading contender to replace Marsh in the playing eleven.
One four-wicket haul followed by a five-wicket haul makes Tom Rogers the top bowler from Renegades’ camp. Rogers has 15 wickets in 8 games and is currently the third-highest wicket-taker of the season. Akeal Hossein and Mujeeb ur Rehman will lead the spin department. The duo has 20 wickets with an economy of 6.28.
Key Players: Aaron Finch, Akeal Hossein, Tom Rogers.
Martin Guptill, Sam Harper (wk), Aaron Finch (c), Jake Fraser McGurk, Jonathan Wells, Mackenzie Harvey, Will Sutherland, Akeal Hosein, Tom Rogers, Kane Richardson, Mujeeb Ur Rahman

An L-W-L-W-L-W-L streak shows Hurricanes are having a mixed season. The underperforming middle order is one of the reasons behind the Hurricanes’ failure this season. Fortunately, the top order is carrying the team very well. Skipper Matthew Wade is the Hurricanes’ leading run scorer, with 186 runs in 7 games at a strike rate of 141.98. But all eyes will be on Ben McDermott, who has 144 runs in 5 games at a strike rate of 163.63 - best amongst the Hurricanes batters.
Hurricanes’ money will be on Tim David in the middle. David has scored 174 runs in 7 games at a strike rate of 155.35. This includes 11 fours and 9 sixes. With 6 half-centuries coming from the top order, it will be interesting to see if Tim David gets a chance to show his power at the early stage of the game. His 39 off 20 balls against the Strikers went in vain after a century from Matthew Short handed a 7-wicket loss to Hurricanes.
Patrick Dooley will be our choice for the top bowler from the Hurricanes camp. Dooley has 12 wickets this season at an economy of just over 6. Riley Meredith will bowl as a shadow to Dooley after claiming 10 wickets in 7 games. But he will have to work on his length as the pacer has given almost 9 runs per over.
Key Players: Ben McDermott, Matthew Wade, Patrick Dooley.
Caleb Jewell, Ben McDermott, Matthew Wade (c & wk), Zak Crawley, Tim David, Asif Ali, Mitchell Owen, Faheem Ashraf, Nathan Ellis, Patrick Dooley, Riley Meredith
Timothy David, Nathan Ellis, Joel Paris, Riley Meredith, Caleb Jewell, Zak Crawley, Matthew Wade, Ben McDermott, Asif Ali, Faheem Ashraf, Wil Parker
The weather will be sunny. The temperature will range between 15 and 30°C. The wind will be flowing from the west at 10-15 kmh. The pitch is considered good for batting in the second innings. For pacers, it offers a high bounce and swings at earlier stages.
The 32nd T20 will be held at Docklands Stadium, Melbourne, on 7th January from 12:35 pm IST. The venue holds a capacity of 48000 spectators and has hosted 12 ODIs, and many BBL games so far.
In the 12 ODIs played, the results have favored the team defending the target 8 times. but both games played this season have been won by the team chasing the target. Even the bigger picture shows 7 wins out of the 10 for the team batting second. The team winning the toss should bowl first.
Though Melbourne Renegades have managed to break their 4-match losing streak, they are still struggling with their batting lineup. Except for the first three games, it hasn’t been that effective. And Rogers is not going to take wickets every game. Hurricanes, however, have a balanced batting and bowling unit. Yes! They haven’t won the game where they scored 229 runs. But the top-order, with 6 half-centuries and a combined strike rate far better than the Renegades, makes them a side to watch. Plus, they have 4 wins in the last 5 matches against Renegades.
We predict that Hobart Hurricanes will defeat Melbourne Renegades.
