It’s a Melbourne Derby as the Melbourne Stars go up against the Melbourne Renegades in the 33rd game of the Big Bash League 2021-22. The Stars suffered a loss against the Perth Scorchers as the side is battling Covid with at least 10 players out of action. The Renegades saw their last game against Sydney Sixers being washed away by rain.

The Melbourne Renegades have been in poor shape right through the season and the side has managed just one win so far. However, they would count their chances against a depleted Stars side. It remains to be seen if the Stars can pull off a win with so many new faces in the squad.

Melbourne Stars Preview

Glenn Maxwell’s side played bravely in the last game against the Perth Scorchers. The side which has been badly hit by the Covid virus had to field as many as 7 new players in the last game. They went down by 50 runs after having had given the Scorchers a scare with the opening wicket stand. Maxwell would want his side to play spirited cricket here and get back to winning.

Debutant Tom Rogers played well and set up a good opening wicket stand with Joe Clarke in the last game. The pair would have to do well here. Maxwell must guide the middle order and add runs with Charlie Wakim, Hilton Cartwright, and Tom O’Connell in this game. They would also expect big hitting towards the end of the innings from Justin Avendano and Xavier Crone.

The depleted bowling attack would face a massive challenge here and the side would need wickets from Maxwell and Brody Couch in this game. Haris Rauf was wayward in the last game and he would need to bowl better lines. Qais Ahmed must use his experience and keep the scoring rate under check with O’Connell and Crone.

Melbourne Stars Predicted Playing XI:

Glenn Maxwell (c), Joe Clarke (wk), Tom Rogers, Charlie Wakim, Hilton Cartwright, Justin Avendano, Tom O'Connell, Qais Ahmad, Xavier Crone, Brody Couch, Haris Rauf

Melbourne Renegades Preview

Kane Richardson comes in as skipper in place of Nic Maddinson who has been called into the national side. Their performance so far has been poor as the team sits at the bottom of the points table. However. Richardson would count his chances in the game given the Stars’ lack of choice in this game. He would like his players to put in their best performance and win this game.

Aaron Finch and Mackenzie Harvey haven’t been in the best of form and the side would look for a good show from them at the start. The middle-order too hasn’t been consistent and runs would be expected in this game from Sam Harper, Jake Fraser, and James Seymour. Mohammad Nabi and Will Sutherland shall need to make good use of their hitting abilities in this game.

The side has struggled with the form of its bowling attack so far in the tournament and they would expect to see a good show from Reece Topley and Kane Richardson in this game. Zahir Khan would have an important role as he has been consistent so far in the season. The likes of Sutherland, Nabi, and Jack Prestwidge would have to bowl tight lines in the middle overs.

Melbourne Renegades Predicted Playing XI:

Kane Richardson (c), Mackenzie Harvey, Sam Harper (wk), Aaron Finch, James Seymour, Jake Fraser, Mohammad Nabi, Jack Prestwidge, Will Sutherland, Reece Topley, Zahir Khan

Melbourne Renegades Actual Playing XI:

Weather Conditions

There would be odd clouds over Melbourne on January 03 and batting conditions are expected to be good. Batsmen would be able to play their strokes freely and we expect to see a high-scoring contest. The side batting first here shall look to put up 170 runs or more on the board.

Venue Details

Melbourne Cricket Ground is a great venue for batsmen. Once they get their eyes set in, they can score runs easily on this wicket. Fast bowlers have done well here in the past as there is good bounce and carry on the surface. Spinners also enjoy bowling here as the size of the ground offers them more room to experiment.

Toss: To Bat

MCG has been a good ground for the batsmen and the wicket allows them to play their strokes. Here most teams have won games batting first as the wicket aids bowlers towards the end of the game. The side winning the toss would have little hesitation in opting to bat first.

Melbourne Stars face a big challenge with team selection. It is tough for the side with so many new players and they are likely to struggle for the next few games. The team would have to put up a brave performance in this game. The Renegades have played poorly so far but they have better strength in the side, and this would make them favorites to win this game.
