With table-toppers Sydney Sixers losing their last game and bottom of the pile Melbourne Stars getting their first win of the season in their last match, the BBL table is suddenly a lot more congested than anyone expected!
Ahead of this game, Match 23, the Sixers top the table with eight points but have Perth Scorchers, Sydney Thunder and Hobart Hurricanes trailing them by only two points.
The two Melbourne sides are in the bottom half of the table at this stage but the Renegades are only two points behind the Scorchers in second place. It was a comfortable win for the Stars against Brisbane Heat on New Year's Day and another victory in this game would certainly make the table squeeze together even more.

With a target of 150 to beat Brisbane Heat, Melbourne Stars cruised home with 11 balls to spare, something which did not look to be on the cards when they found themselves 14/3 after one ball of the fourth over!
The fourth wicket partnership between Dan Lawrence (64 not out) and captain Marcus Stoinis (62) was enough to get the Stars' season up and running and even allowed them to lose Glenn Maxwell for a golden duck. As a result, the batting line-up should come into his derby fixture with plenty of confidence with the likes of Ben Duckett and Sam Harper also producing good numbers this season.
With the ball, skipper Stoinis was the only player to go wicketless against Brisbane Heat and Joel Paris will be keen to open the bowling again against the Renegades after taking 1/20 from his four overs on New Year's Day.
Lawrence in his first game of this season for the Stars scored a match winning half century (64 runs in 38 balls) where he smashed 2 sixes. The english batter is known for his big hitting and can well clear the rope with ease.
Stoinis has scores of 62, 22, 20, 27, 26, and 37 this season. He has gotten off to good starts and finally converted one of those starts into a match-winning knock in the last game against the Brisbane Heat. Given his recent form, we back Stoinis to score over 19.5 runs against the Renegades.

The Renegades were beaten for the second game in a row in Match 20 when they went down by five wickets with 17 balls remaining against Adelaide Strikers at the Docklands Stadium.
The defeat was confirmed long before the winning runs were hit from the first ball of the 18th over of the second innings, but there were times during the first innings, when opener Josh Brown was going strong, where the Renegades looked like potential match winners. They do have fluent white ball batters and they will always back one of Brown, Jake Fraser-McGurk, Tim Seifert or Jacob Bethell to deliver the goods in the top four positions.
Tom Rogers and Adam Zampa both come into this Melbourne derby after taking two wickets each against Adelaide Strikers, and the left-arm spin of Jacob Bethell could also be handy as a left-field option in this game.
After a good start to the season, Siefert has struggled a bit in the last two games, where he hasn't scored over 10 runs. Siefert has scored 133 runs in 5 matches and has been amongst the runs. We back him to bounce back and have an impact with the bat against the Stars.

Although Saturday is forecast to be cloudy in Melbourne, the temperature is also expected to reach 36 degrees. By the time the lights are in full flow and evening has arrived, it will still be 30+ for this game.
The MCG is one of the most inspiring grounds to play at in world cricket and short of the Boxing Day test, playing in front of a huge crowd in a Melbourne derby is also an experience to remember. We expect a good batting track with a par score of 180+.
Melbourne Stars have won 16 of the 26 coin tosses against the Melbourne Renegades and this season the Stars have won 50% of their coin tosses this season and we back them to win the Coin Toss against the Renegades in this Melbourne Derby.
The pitch at the MCG offers a balanced track that favours both the batters and bowlers. The total match score in the last BBL match played at this venue is 325 runs. We predict it to be another high scoring close affair and the total match score over 320.5 runs
The team fielding first won the last game for both Melbourne sides so we predict that both captains will go out to the middle with the intention of bowling first if they win the toss.
Momentum can change very quickly in T20 tournaments but ahead of this derby it certainly looks like the Renegades are stumbling and the Stars are on their way up. As a result, we are predicting another victory for bottom of the table Melbourne Stars.
We are backing Melbourne Stars to win!
