It is still early days in the 2023-24 Big Bash League but Melbourne Stars and Sydney Thunder can ill-afford too many more defeats or the teams in the top half will start to pull away from them. Even before this game, and although Brisbane Heat have played four matches, the Stars and Thunder are already seven points from the top spot in the table.

The margins of defeat show that Melbourne Stars have not really been competitive yet whereas Sydney Thunder could have picked up one win if a few key moments had gone their way in Match 8.

With both teams desperate to get a victory, this game will be well worth following!

Melbourne Stars Preview

Melbourne Stars will benefit from not focusing on their last game as everything, including the toss, went against them. Firstly they need to post more runs and the likes of Marcus Stoinis and Hilton Cartwright will be key as Glenn Maxwell is expected to miss this game once again through injury.

In Haris Rauf, the Stars have one of the world's most successful white ball bowlers of the last 18-24 months and getting the best out of him will be key. Skipper Stoinis needs to give Rauf the exact that he requires and if he has that then he is more than likely to deliver.

The Stars were beaten by Thunder in both matches last year and they need to pull out all the stops to prevent a third successive loss.

Melbourne Stars Predicted Playing XI:

Sam Harper (wk), Thomas Rogers, Beau Webster, Marcus Stoinis (c), Hilton Cartwright, Nick Larkin, Jonathan Merlo, Liam Dawson, Usama Mir, Joel Paris, Haris Rauf

Sydney Thunder Preview

The Sydney Thunder team management and players may well still be scratching their heads trying to work out how they failed to beat Adelaide Strikers after posting 200/7 on December 19th. But against an unconfident bowling unit of Melbourne Stars, they could well have the opportunity to go 200+ once more.

Cameron Bancroft top scored with 74 runs from 54 balls and there was an encouraging 7-ball 18 from Alex Hales who had been in a wretched run of form. Oliver Davies continues to be a consistent performer in the BBL.

Tanveer Sangha has proved himself to be an expert spinner at both international and franchise level. His bowling will be key in this clash on Saturday.

Sydney Thunder Predicted Playing XI:

Cameron Bancroft, Alex Hales, Jason Sangha, Oliver Davies, Matthew Gilkes (wk), Alex Ross, Daniel Sams, Chris Green (c), Liam Hatcher, Zaman Khan, Tanveer Sangha

Weather Conditions

There could be some short sharp thunderstorms in the region across the first hour of this game. But once they have passed, the forecast is for warm and dry conditions for the rest of Saturday afternoon.

MLS vs SYT Pitch Report

Reports suggest that this pitch will be a little two-paced in Albury and a par score will be no higher than 155. We expect spinners and quick bowlers to enjoy bowling on this wicket.

Toss: To Bowl

With not much data to go on regarding BBL fixtures at this ground, we predict that both teams will want to field first and try and get a feel for what is a par score before chasing.

With both teams already falling behind in the BBL group stage, winning this match will be a priority for the Stars and Thunder. So far in this campaign, Sydney Thunder have looked like a good team who are not far from picking up a win whereas Melbourne Stars look very poor and with a big Glenn Maxwell sized hole in their line-up at the moment. Our winning prediction is for Sydney Thunder to win.

We are backing Sydney Thunder to win this match!
