We are into the 9th game of the Women’s Big Bash League 2021 and Melbourne Stars Women have a big challenge as they take on Sydney Sixers Women. The Stars suffered a crushing defeat in the last game against the Hobart Hurricanes Women. Sydney Sixers on the other hand have looked good and come into this game after a big win against Hobart Hurricanes.

Sydney Sixers Women would take confidence from their good record against Melbourne Stars whom they have defeated in the last four games including the one earlier this season. It will be an uphill challenge for the Melbourne Stars as their batting and bowling have looked in poor shape so far in the tournament.

Melbourne Stars Women Preview

Meg Lanning’s side has its backs to the wall after their second consecutive loss in the season. It was a meltdown on the part of their batters in the last game against Hobart Hurricanes Women where they folded for 89 runs to lose the game by 63 runs. One more loss would put them under serious pressure and Lanning would like to see a strong show from her players in this game.

Elyse Villani and Annabel Sutherland had batted well in the 1st game, and they would have to provide a good start in this must-win contest. Lanning and Maia Bouchier would be tasked with steering the innings and setting up a strong platform for the likes of Kim Garth, Anna Lanning, and Nicole Faltum to do the big-hitting towards the end of the innings.

Their bowling attack has looked sloppy in the two games the side has played and they would need early wickets from Tess Flintoff and Garth in this game. Sutherland has bowled tight spells and the same would be expected of her. Sophie Day, Rhys McKenna, and Linsey Smith must bowl in the right areas to put the Sixers’ batters in trouble.

Melbourne Stars Women Predicted Playing XI:

Meg Lanning (c), Elyse Villani, Annabel Sutherland, Maia Bouchier, Kim Garth, Nicole Faltum (wk), Tess Flintoff, Anna Lanning, Linsey Smith, Sophie Day, Rhys McKenna

Sydney Sixers Women Preview

The Sixers are looking extremely strong at the moment with two wins in two games. Ellyse Perry would take pride in the way her side has performed and shall look to continue with the same momentum here. Perry would want her players to draw inspiration from the brilliant record they have against the Stars.

Shafali Verma is in good form and she would look forward to a good opening wickets stand with Alyssa Healy. They have one of the strongest middle-order line-ups in the tournament with Ashleigh Gardner, Perry, and Nicole Bolton in the team. The side would also like to see strong performances down the order from Maitlan Brown and Angela Reakes who have a good range of strokes.

Perry has been at her best with the ball, and she would aim to grab early wickets in the game sharing the new ball with Bolton. Radha Yadav and Maitlan Brown have also done well and a strong show would be expected from them here. Stella Campbell, Emma Hughes, and Gardner add depth to this attack.

Sydney Sixers Women Predicted Playing XI:

Ellyse Perry (c), Alyssa Healy (wk), Shafali Verma, Ashleigh Gardner, Nicole Bolton, Angela Reakes, Radha Yadav, Maitlan Brown, Claire Moore, Stella Campbell, Emma Hughes

Weather Conditions

It would be slightly overcast over Hobart on October 20, and this is likely to aid the bowlers. The batting conditions would be challenging as batters would need to get their eyes set in. The side batting first in this game shall be happy to breach the 160-run mark with the overcast conditions.

Venue Details

Bellerive Oval, Hobart has a small venue, and the shorter square boundaries offer lots of scoring opportunities to the batters. The wicket is flat but there is some assistance for the fast bowlers with the new ball. Spinners haven’t generally enjoyed the conditions here as there is little assistance for them.

Toss: To Bowl

In most T20 games these days we are increasingly seeing sides opting to bowl upon winning the toss. The wicket here is expected to offer some assistance to the bowlers early in the game. The side winning the toss in this game would have little hesitation in bowling first in the game.

Melbourne Stars Women would be under pressure going into this game after the two ordinary performances that we have seen from them so far.  Their bowlers would be tested by the Sixers batters and need to execute their plans to perfection. Sydney Sixers Women are on a high coming into this game with two consecutive wins and this would make them favorites to win this game.
