Northern Knights are back to Seddon Park in Hamilton for their second home game of the season. They will take on the 5th placed Otago Volts who’ve won just 1 of their 5 matches so far.

The last time the Knights were here, skipper Jeet Raval scored a fifty and led his team to a 196-run total batting first. Tim Southee and Mitchell Santner were part of that playing XI that secured a 55-run win in Northern Knights’ opening match.

The two joined the Blackcaps for national duty and since then the Knights haven’t been impressive with the ball. Otago Volts, on the other hand, have been on a roller coaster ride lately.

They conceded 234 runs in their opening match and in the next game, they were bowled out for just 47 runs while batting first. After two losses, the Volts bounced back restricting Auckland to just 151 runs and chasing it down with 3 wickets in hand.

Otago are looking in fine touch with the bat but their bowling has been quite expensive. And Northern Knights’ batting continues to be out of form and cannot chase down a competitive total.

Northern Districts Preview

Northern Knights seem to have lost the plot after their win in the opening game. We expected the bowling attack to be affected by the omission of Santner and Southee but they’ve underperformed with the bat too.

Neil Wagner will be a key player with the ball. He was very expensive in the second game but was quick to bounce back as he finished with 3 for 17 in the last match against Wellington.

Brett Hampton also looked in good touch. Northern Knights need their key bowlers to deliver a team effort to put the opposition on the back foot. Scott Kuggeleijn is another key figure in this bowling attack.

However, the likes of Tim Pringle and Matthew Fisher have been quite unreliable and their inconsistency will hurt the Knights. Understandably, missing Southee and Santner would have a considerable effect on the bowling strength. But to not perform with the bat after that win wasn’t expected of the Northern Knights.

They’ve got some promising players in the lineup. Katene Clarke, Tim Seifier, and Jeet Raval are key batters in the top 4.

Skipper Raval has scored two fifties so far. In the middle-order, there is Joe Carter who could strike a crucial partnership and lead the team to a big total. Scott Kuggeleijn was promoted to number 3 in the last two outings and he delivered in one of these games.

It is a deep batting lineup with many all-rounders but the inconsistency and lack of form at the top is hurting Knights’ chances big time.

Northern Districts Predicted Playing XI:

Tim Seifert (wk), Katene Clarke, Jeet Raval (c), Joe Carter, Henry Cooper, Brett Hampton, Scott Kuggeleijn, Tim Pringle, Frederick Walker, Neil Wagner, Matthew Fisher

Otago Volts Preview

Otago Volts seem to be close to a victory. Their batting performances have seen an upward graph in recent outings. From 47 all-out, they went to successfully chase down a 152-run target with 3 wickets in hand.

And they improved that performance too, quite significantly, with a 171-5 total while batting first against Canterbury in the last match. This is impressive and will give the Volts some confidence coming into this match.

Max Chu and Dale Phillips have emerged as finishers at number 6 and 7. And while Hamish Rutherford also looks in good touch at the top, the likes of Dean Foxcroft and Glenn Phillips at 3 and 4 pack a strong punch in the middle order.

All they need right now is an improved bowling performance. It looks like a very new bowling attack compared to the previous seasons. While Jacob Duffy continues to lead this attack, there are a few new faces like Andrew Hazeldine and Ben Lockrose.

Jake Gibson and Travis Muller have also been among the wicket-takers but overall this bowling attack has lacked consistency. There are many options for skipper Dale Phillips and he should be confident in taking on the Knights with this bowling attack.

Otago Volts Predicted Playing XI:

Hamish Rutherford, Jake Gibson, Dean Foxcroft, Glenn Phillips, Max Chu (wk), Dale Phillips (c), Llew Johnson, Ben Lockrose, Andrew Hazeldine, Jacob Duffy, Travis Muller

Weather Conditions

There is considerable grass on the pitch and it offers help for the batters allowing them to time their strokes with ease. There may be some help for the new-ball bowlers in the early overs. Overall, we can expect a lot of runs to be scored in this game. The weather will be cloudy with a temperature of 1 degree Celsius in Hamilton on the match day.

ND vs OV Pitch Report

Seddon Park in Hamilton will host the Northern Knights vs Otago Volts match of the Super Smash 2023-24. The average 1st innings score in domestic T20s at this venue is 164 runs. However, for a winning total, the team batting first should be looking for at least 185+ runs.

Toss: To Bat

Teams batting first have won 21 of the 36 T20s played at this venue. This season, Northern Knights successfully defended 196 runs on this ground in their opening match. The hosts have struggled to chase in recent outings and would rather defend a total here on a good batting wicket.

Both teams are struggling to find wins and have their own set of issues to deal with as they come to Hamilton. Though the Knights may have the home advantage, their players aren’t in great rhythm lately. And in contrast, Otago Volts have their batters in fine touch and a few of their bowlers showing great promise. We reckon Otago Volts will have a slight edge coming into this contest and will start as favorites in our match prediction.
