There were very contrasting fortunes for both teams coming into this game, as one started off with a loss, and the other started with a win. Northern Knights will look to put a win on the scoreboard, while Otago will be looking to consolidate on the first win and get on a winning streak.

Northern Knights would find themselves unlucky to be going on to this game with a loss behind their back. Losing the game by one wicket would definitely leave the dressing room in a low, but the Northern Knights need to pull themselves up and go all out against Otago in their 2nd match on the Plunket Shield 2022-23. On the other hand, Otago, on the other hand, were mighty impressive and dominant in their first game against Auckland, as they registered a 168-run win. Otago would be looking to take this momentum, put on a dominant display against the Northern Knights, and go on a winning run.

Both teams might be coming in with contrasting fortunes and results, but this match has all the makings to be a very competitive and thrilling game.

Northern Knights Preview

Northern Knights are coming into this season, finishing 3rd in the last season of the Plunket Shield. As much as they would have wanted to start off on a winning note, they would want to keep that behind them and start off fresh for the next game. They missed winning the last game by a whisker and will be motivated to do much better in the next game.

The batting department fell flat in the first innings but pulled right back in the second with an exceptional batting display. Henry Cooper was mighty impressive with 56 & 90 in both innings, but the star of the show was Bharat Popli, who scored 75 & 127 in both innings. The second innings saw Jeet Raval and Tim Seifert contribute 54 and 69 runs, respectively.

The bowling department almost pulled off the win but fell short of just 1 wicket. Like the batting department, they also came through in the 2nd innings. Jow Walker in the 1st innings and Kristen Clarke in the 2nd innings picked up 3 wickets each, but the star of the bowling was Matthew Fisher, who picked up a total of 8 wickets, including a five-wicket haul in the second innings.

Key Players: Jeet Raval, Joe Walker, Bharat Popli, Colin de Grandhomme

Northern Knights Predicted Playing XI:

Jeet Raval, Henry Cooper, Bharat Popli, Joe Carter (c), Tim Seifert (wk), Colin de Grandhomme, Brett Hampton, Katene Clarke, Neil Wagner, Joe Walker, Matthew Fisher

Otago Volts Preview

Dominant would be an understatement if I were, to sum up Otago’s performance in their first game against Auckland. Winning the game by 168 runs marked a solid performance with both bat and ball, and they will look forward to doing the same against Northern Knights.

The batting department was decent, given the conditions, as they mounted 261 & 219 runs in both innings. Thorn Parkes was the top scorer in the 1st & 2nd innings with 54 & 58 runs, respectively. He also got decent help and support from the rest of the batting department, who chipped in with valuable 30s and 40s. However, they will want at least one batsman to go on and get the big score in the next game.

The bowling department ensured that Otago won the game. Travis Muller and Jacob Duffy proved to be too strong for the Auckland batting line-up, as Travis Muller picked up 4 wickets in the 1st innings and 3 wickets in the 2nd innings. But Jacob Duffy was the star, as he picked up a five-wicket haul in the first innings and 3 wickets in the 2nd, ensuring a clinical win for Otago. Otago would want to take this performance forward and continue their dominant run in the Plunket Shield.

Key Players: Jacob Duffy, Thorn Parkes, Hamish Rutherford, Travis Muller

Otago Volts Predicted Playing XI:

Hamish Rutherford (c), Jacob Cumming, Dale Phillips, Dean Foxcroft, Thorn Parkes, Max Chu (wk), Michael Rippon, Travis Muller, Jake Gibson, Jacob Duffy, Michael Rae

Venue Details

Mount Maunganui is host to the Bay Oval cricket ground in New Zealand. The stadium was opened in 2005, with a capacity of 10,000. The ground is known as the batsmen’s paradise, as batsmen enjoy batting here. The average 1st innings score here is 370, whilst the average 2nd innings score here is 437. The average drops drastically in the 3rd and 4th innings.

Toss: To Bat

This ground is famous for posting huge totals, and there will be no doubt in the minds of the captains to win the toss and bat first. The only doubt in their mind would be whether to take a gamble and make use of the batting conditions in the 2nd innings, which get considerably better.

Northern Knights will find themselves a tad bit unlucky, given how things ended up in the first game, and will have added motivation to make things right in this game. On the other hand, Otago will look to carry their form forward and make it two wins in a row.

We predict that Otago will defeat the Northern Knights.
